Hi peeps

selling up and getting a sport back ( s line of corse )

need to take my plate off i know i need a v317 form ( ill do it tomorrow)

but the log book and reg certificate do they have to be origionals of coppies ?

how long dose it take ? ( has anyone done it before)
 
If you know where your DVLA office is and it's close enough, you can walk in and they will do it over the counter there and then. You will need the MOT, V5 log book (both originals) and your tax disc. They will issue you a new MOT, and tax disc there and then and give you a form basically saying that your plate is in the system to be transferred. You keep this until your log book comes back.

If your DVLA office is miles away then you do it by post. You sent the same documents, but NOT your tax disc. This gets sent back when the new one comes through along with the MOT.

There is the charges aswell, £80 just to put it on retention and £25 to re-assign it. You can pay the full £105 up front which makes it easier to transfer onto your new car when you have it. I don't think the prices have gone up since I did mine last March 2010....

hi scott though they could do that mate i rang up today but apparently unless the plate is clear ( newly percased) or just sitting on retenion the can over the counter it. but if your taking it off for a retention order they wont do it over the counter ( wa**ers)
 
good thinking batman. the dvla are gay. may have to get new plates made up ( apparently its not 100% you get your old reg back)

They do say that, but I transferred my plate about 6 times now, and everytime I had the original reg back....
 
I went to Brum to take mine off £105
It took about two weeks for V5,Mot and tax to come through the post
 
do you need the registration document ( cant remember what its called, the one when you buy the plate ) the lady on the phone said i need it but one ones mentioned it. thanks for the replys

Minor point, but it is actual £25 to put a number on retention and £80 to transfer it another vehicle.

I always put my number on retention a few weeks before I take delivery of my new car and then give the retention certificate to the dealer. They then use this to register the new car with my number.

When the retention certificate comes from the DVLA it comes with details of the replacement number for the existing car and a form that allows you to purchase a new set of plates with that number. My dealer always tells me not to bother and just give them the form and they will put the new number on before they sell it. It does mean that when I go to collect my new car there are two cars on the forecourt with the same number, but only one is ever on the road at a time.

If you are putting it on retention then it should take 7 days. If you take it to your local office it still saves 2 days postage!
Will take longer to get your V5 back as thats Swansea.
£105 is a Pi*s take though Grrrrrr.

here here, its another cost to consider when swaping your car. the only reson i am doing it now is becuase it looks like a prvate sale look to be the betther option. some dealers are on very hard drugs tho. seen a 2006 se 57k 3dr for nearly 10k lmfao

Quickest way is to take it to your local office.
You will get the MOT & tax back after 5-7 working days then the V5 3-4 days after that.
yeah, the £ is a TOTAL PAIN!
Only newly purchased plates or plates on retention can be done same day.
This didn't used to be the case but it is now.

When my brother bought his Aston, the guy turned up with the same private plate on the DB7 and his new DB9. It looked cool seeing the 2 cars with the same number plate, expecially as both cars were black and the number plates spelled 'black' - But obviously highly illegal.
The DB9 was meant to have the private plate on it, but as my brother was putting his private plate on the DB7, the old owner didn't bother getting the temporary reg on it for a couple of days.
If that was me, I would've got a ticket the second I pulled off my drive.

Strickly speaking, probably not, but it's only for around 10 miles and as all my A3s have been the same silver colour, if a police car was to do an ANPR on me as I was driving to the dealer it would come up as a Silver Audi A3 which would be correct for either the old one or the new one.

As you may gather, I like the A3 and I like the colour Silver!!!

I'm the same with black cars. I think Knight Rider and Smokey and the Bandit may be responsible for this.
If anyone asks, my A3 is light black. It was too good to miss out on, so I had to make a sacrifice on the colour this time.
 
i love my a3 thats why i am looking for a new one. (5 door) wish i would have got one sooner. my fav colour is lava grey

Technically you don't 'own' the number. What you pay for is the right to use it, which can be taken aware if you misuse that right.
 
Hello peeps
finally getting somewhere recived a letter today from DVLA. Had new tax, a new mot, and a v948 number plate auth certificate.

Reverted back to origonal reg ( dont have the plates boooo)

ok here where i need my lovly audi sport peeps to help. i have a letter and some of the info i dont get ?

it states:

Your application for the above number has been accsepted ( p20orn) i now have a new one ( YG06@@@)
will be allocated to your vehicle in place of the one you retained. please fit number plates showing number on vehicle. To obtain new plates you must submit the enclosed number plate auth certificate ( v948) along with verification of name and address detals to the number plate supplier. please inform your insurance company you have chnaged your reg mark.

ok Q1: do i have to use like halfrauds to get my plates ? or can i get them from my dads work ( under counter) ?

It further states:

skiped some bits then - ypu will recive a V778 retention document, which records the right of retention that you have been granted for the retained number. you should recive your v5c showing its replacment reg number with in four weeks. you will not receive a reg certificate if your vehicle is accident damaged, until the vehicle has under gone and passed a vehicle identifiction check by vehicle operator services agency (VOSA).

if your vehicle is hgv ( its not so i skipped)

if your vehicle is PSV( dont know what that is) send your certificate of initial fitness/ notice and test certificate along with a copy( not origional) of the new registration certificate v5c to records and mantenance section, VOSA for amenmend and authentification.

Q2 do i have to get my car inspected ?

Q3 When can i PUt my car up for sale ?

Get the plates from an authorised number plate seller. If your Dads "under the counter " plates are legal then fine.
DVLA do ask to inspect some cars but they wouldn't of issued the new tax etc if they wanted to inspect it so your passed that point.
In theory you can put your car up for sale now, but you can't really actually do a deal until you have your V5 back...

Hi mate there real plates ( propper size numbers, plates ect) but there for fork lift trucks so i didt know if they have to go on a computer register. but surly if i kept the old plates its the same thing.

just wondering if i can put my plate back on same day with my retention order? if i go to the dvla and if i would need to change my plate in the car park before driving off.

As soon as dvla have given you the documents either at an office or through post, then you are able to put plates on, not before.
 
sorry its probly the way i have explained it
i think i can get it swaped same day ( from retention to car)
but my question is if i go there in my car and get it swaped am i expected to change it in the car park or can i get home and do it. cos tbf if you got in in the mail say 10am and you go to work at 9am you would have not done it that day any way ?

If you go to the dvla office, you are required to change it then & there as legally you're not displaying the right car info, postal way is different to the dvla, so that gives you an excuse, but there are no excuses when you visit there offices, believe me I've been there myself.
 
I have transferred my private plate between cars eight times so far. Only once have I been asked to take the 'donor' vehicle to the local DVLA office for checking. All they did was check that the VIN number matched the V5 and it had the correct private plate. They then said I would receive the new number and retention certificate through the post.

As five of my transfers have been from a Silver A3 to another Silver A3 I have always driven my car to the dealers with my private plate still on it and collected the new A3 with the same number. Strange seeing two A3s parked next to each other with exactly the same number. Both the chap at the DVLA office and the dealer have said that, whilst not strictly legal, it was not a problem as both cars would never be on the road at the same time. Even if the police did an ANPR check all they would get is that it is a Silver Audi A3 2.0TDI Sportback which would be correct for both the old and the new car. I shall do the same when my new A3 arrives in March. The dealer then puts the new plates on the car before they sell it.

Legally you have to yes, as much as dvla would say it should be ok, they're not traffic cops are they, your risk, but could result in a fine & points, for what, a phone call & 2 minutes to fit different plates.

last time i put one on retention in october 2009 at birmingham it wasnt done instantly, letter which is a cerificate to buy number plates with new number on came through the post, with a new tax disc and instruction to destroy the old one. It states as soon as possible


in 15 years of owning plates and god nows how many transfers ( i have 4 ) i have never seen anything that demands you change them there and then, think about it, if they asked to see the car, where do you get plates from instantly ( as it happens there is someone by the dvla who sells plates, you wont miss the adverts)

fact dvla computer wont be updated instantly!


i havnt had a transfer or retention done instantly since about 2000. you have more chance of being pulled on the replacement plate as the no plate recognition system the police use will most likely not show you as insured as it is not updated instantly.

Well guess you're lucky then, cause my brighton dvla office did exactly as per what I stated, even had me drive home, change my plates back, as I drove there in prep for the change as they had to inspect the car with old plates on, then once inspected etc & docs changed & handed to me in hand the document, the new tax disc & anyother relevant docs, then advised me I could fit new ones, go figure.

not long back from manchester
got it swaped over you need retention doc ( 778) tax disk detals ( serial number) and your v5c / mot

i asked the person there and they recomend within 48 hours to change over. i didnt take my car in the end.

i have just changed my tax and plates over / informed insurance ill get some pics up of the pressed plates later
