My S3 Thread

Yeh I could do that. I guess all you can see is the intercooler anyhow...

I tried to fit the catch tank yesterday but still have to figure out a nice way to mount it. I was thinking of getting a dye to run a proper thread on that extra stud in the engine bay. For now I've just fitted it to the tip like standard using the hockey puck.

The breather setup (getting some new Aeroquip push fit hose on Monday):

I'll come up with a way of mounting the catch can and get that on when I can be *****. Also, want to get this diff fitted.

So I've lined up some Bilstein PSS coilovers so I can get it a touch lower and replace the top mount bushes. I called VW and they wanted $46 + GST a side for the bushes only!! When I could get a pair of compbrake alloy ones for $150 it seemed like false economy. Anyway, I dropped Seb at Euro Automotive a text earlier and he said to drop by and grab some from him. I went to grab them at 8pm, what a service! I'm going to be making a site for him soon to get the word out there a bit more. Highly recommended if you're in Sydney...

So, I've got two standard ones to fit with bearings.

On another note I gave the S3 a proper launch tonight and I was very impressed, it felt awesome. I always wonder if it has a map but if it goes this way as standard it must be awesome with a map.

I also bought a Liquid Gauge today. Does anyone know if its ok with a heater on the back of it? I mean it's mounted in the vent so must get a bit hot?

Also have some proper AN12 gooodridge hose to finish the breather.

AN is army naval or something along those lines and the numeric value is in 16th of an inch. So AN12 = 12/16th (or 3/4" or 19.05mm).

The fittings are actually not that bad at all from eBay from either race teams in the USA or even new ones are well priced. Bits like Y connectors are a bit pricey mind you. I can get them here but, like with everything else, they're about 3 times the price. The cam cover and block adapters are from Integrated Engineering.

The benefit is, of course these will outlast the car, are very re-usable and, in my case, cost less than the replacements parts I needed for the breather system from VW.

I have siliconed my flap shut on the vent so no heat.... no mistakes....

Good call, I wasn't sure how much of the vent it replaced. I'll do that then, cheers.

So I bought some new wheels tonight; BBS CH in 18x8.5. They are 5x120 so I have to get hub adapters but they are pretty rare here from what I can see and they were nicely priced. I've always wanted them since seeing SteveS3's car on them:

(Sorry for stealing the pic)

So I got the Bilstein PSS fitted yesterday. Justin, an owner of a very nice R32 fitted the kit for me (and sold me it). The man at work:

My top mount rubbers were pretty past it (on the outside, new in the middle):

Here's how the car sits now. It's much more level than before. I think the busted mounts meant the front sat real low before.

Also, I just picked up my BBS CH's. Organising the adapters now...

Cheers! I'll be following your footsteps down the remap etc route at some stage. I just want to get it "sorted" and enjoy it for a while now!

Oil leak is next then I'll be happy (he says).

PCD adapters/spacers are on their way from the US. I used a company called Motorsport Tech, they seem to get a good rep on VW Vortex and have been great on emails.

I've gone with :

Hub Centric to Car & Wheel Centric to Wheel
Hub Bolt Pattern: 5x100mm
Hub Diameter: 57.1mm
Flush Fit Bolt Size: 14x1.5
Stud Size: 14x1.5
Center Bore: 72.5mm
Diameter: 5 by 120 (4.72 inches)
Thickness: 2x15mm, 2x20mm

This will end up with ET20 on the front and ET15 on the rear. Looking around on the net this *should* put the wheels flush with the arch. We'll see.

The BBS are off an E46 3 series.

It turns out my current S8 wheels are reps, they're 8" wide and these new ones are 8.5". I've done quite a bit of measuring so I hope it's all good!

Oh right. Are they the M3 wheels? I saw a TT at Ace Cafe 2 weeks ago with E46 M3 wheels on.

My S4s are 8" wide and are now ET 25 front and 20 rear. The fronts are spot on but the rears could come out a few more mil. Your new wheels should look good at ET20 & 15

The rims I'm fitting? They are just BBS CHs, the guy bought them specifically for his BMW but then had to sell up (mrs made him as they're getting married - pussy whiped!). I've got the adapters made in 72.5mm centre bore though so I have the option of fitting other BMW rims later on if need be.

I just don't want it to rub as sometimes it's loaded up. The new suspension is pretty firm though so it should be fine.

Might be M3 CSL alloys which look a bit like BBS ones.

Wish we could get S8 reps here lol

I thought everyone was after the S4 ones? Well hopefully I can sell them here...

Adapters are on their way from the states - fingers (and toes) crossed they arrive this week.

I got the liquid gauge this week too and fitted it tonight. I'll do a proper job of it this weekend. I gave it a quick run after letting the oil get up to temp and hit 226bhp without much effort. I gave it another run later on in 3rd and hit 255bhp but ran out of road/balls. I also hit 1.5 bar/21psi. Is it safe to say it's had a remap? It would explain it being louder on boost and having a TIP and aftermarket diverter valve when I got it. Didn't check airflow figures.

I was half hoping it wasn't remapped so it'd be even quicker...

Next up is fixing the oil leak, fitting the wheels (and swapping tyres over) and drive it...

Yeah of course. No signs to say it's lean but totally agree. I'm wondering what map it has as it's got an APR TIP.

I'm pretty sure the liquid gauge can do AFR so I'll give that a check and do it on the rollers another day. It'll probably be under more realistic load on the road too.

Just ordered the bits to do:
Oil pick up/sump
Phenolic inlet gasket
Valve cover gasket
Cam chain tensioner gasket

And the 3366 tool from VW to do the cam chain tensioner gasket. I got trade too luckily.

The phenolic inlet gasket is only $57 including all parts needed, from 034, if anyone's thinking about getting one.

Apr would be my bet for your map in OZ, check its not switchable...hold the cruise button in for about 10 seconds while stationary if the esp starts flashing you could be in business

Cheers Dave, I'll give that a go later. I assume that would mean I could turn the map off?

I've still not tried the cruise control trick but I will...

I got thinking again last night about painting the CHs before they go on the car. Anthracite would look pretty cool?

Got the B5 TIP today from the UK, posted on Friday, arrived here today (Monday). Fedex are awesome and cheap too! I managed to eventually get it fitted. What a pain in the *** - mainly getting the hose to sit straight on the turbo adapter and making sure the clamp didn't just slide off. Took me about 2-3 hrs in the end, including fitting my catch can. I'll get pics up tomorrow.

Anthricite fo sho. Badger 5 TIP for the win also, Only person in Oz with one???

Got the Jetex too. To be fair most of it was ok but the bottom bend could do with a bit less being trimmed off of it I think. It puts the jubilee clip too much on the **** making it a right pig to do up and it all clamp up well. Using a little 1/4 ratchet with a socket on to do up the jubilee clips helped out massively.

I only gave it a quick drive - couldn't thrash it really as the oil wasn't up to temp. It does sound pretty awesome though, just hope it doesn't draw too much attention. I also need to fit a better way to mount the filter - currently I zip tied it like you have. Also need to sort a heat shield (that also clears the catch can).

GAGGING for the adapters to arrive so I can fit the wheels. I just need to decide whether to get them painted or not I guess. I think I will...

Cable ties are also full of win, every good car has one :)

The more I mod my car the more cable ties have been added ;)

I tend to drive around slower now letting off on part boost as it sounds immense.

Yeah it does! I love that!

Yeah, I was doing the same on the test run. One more thing I noticed was the kind of screeching (not high pitch) noise I got on boost has gone, which is good.

Yeah I think I'll get it done. I need to check if the BBS CH are forged, if they are then powder coating is a bit of a no no.

Regarding the B5 TIP, yeah I'd imagine I am!
