As per the title, another one bites the dust......

Last thursday, 7th July, I was on the M6 near Stoke early in the morning in the outside lane doing approx 80mph. All of a sudden total loss of power, ended up coasting into the hard shoulder.

Put my hi viz on and popped out the warning triangle and off I trotted to the emergency phone. Luckily I'm a member of the RAC, so the HA operator called them on my behalf.

Half hour later or so (nearly 7am now) RAC patrol arrives. Tries the car, no movement or it kicking in despite hearing the starter kick in. He then opens up the cam belt cover at the top, the belt is intact at the head, but when he shone a torch down he could see stripped teeth.

So my B5 is dead, it's kaput, it has deceased, it is no more, it has shrugged off its mortal coil.
I just do not have the time or the patience to do it myself and with the age of the car, I consider it not to be economic to do the job either. So it's now sat outside the house and also sat on ebay as spares or repairs.

Shouldn't be too bad to reapir mate, get a manual and get the head off. You may find some new valves or second hand head and it'll be good as gold again.

Nah, its the existing blue one. Probably wouldn't be that bad but like I said, due to work & family commitments I simply do not have the time to do the job. The black one is also up on ebay as spares or repairs again cause I've no spare time until September at the earliest. I need a car for the job and cant afford to keep a hire car running for longer than it really needs to be. Have bought another car now

I've got me a Bentley manual, a Haynes as well and have rebuilt a few multivalve heads in the past from other marques (VX red top 2.0 16v x2, Rover K series infamous head gasket problem) but I just can't be ars*d to be totally honest, the age of the car doesnt really justify me doing any more and I simply havnt the time.

I wouldnt mind, I fitted a new clutch in January, new Brembo Max discs & pads all round, new coil packs (all four), new CV boots, full year MOT till June 2012 and taxed the b*gger as well. To add insult to injury there's a full tank of petrol in the b*gger.

Drain the fuel out and reclaim the tax.
Shame breaking it for spares is not an option.

What happened with that load cover in the end?
the ends on mine just snapped and the spring poped out and its a bit bag of bits at the moment

Sorry, I've not been back in touch sooner, I've been away for a while working in Durban, South Africa got back home on 4th July.

My lovely missus, in her infinite wisdom & female intuition, had a clear out of the extension whilst I was away and saw that the cover was knacked on one end and binned it.

I'd probably get a shed load more breaking both A4's for parts but again lack of time and more importantly space is the obstacle to that option

The misses would not dare touch any of my car parts, for fear of getting dirty. lol

Space is an issue. If you had the space one thing you could do is let people turn up and take the parts they want and just give you the cash.
Thats what we use to do.

I'm heading back to the Volvo fold after landing an excellent deal on an '04 plate XC90 2.9T6 SE with only 63k on the clock. Daft thing is, its ****** cheaper on the insurance than just one of the A4's
