Dane's Hybrid Conversion Thread

They seem to need mounting quite along way forward, and theyre heavy and they aren't so easily tunable but it would sound sweet

vr6 noise it great on track they not bad seen a good few on track and they do shift

There are plenty of big turbo (or kkk hybrid etc) 1.8T powered cars driving around with their original ECU's mapped up prefectly fine, including quite a few off this very forum.

I understand the added flexibility, i just dont think its worth it for a mild to moderately tuned engine.

I dont see the distinction as to why you would leave the Motronic in an A3 or S3 when you fit a GT28RS or PE1820 or K03 Hybrid, but then spend an additional grand fitting standalone because it happens to be in a golf.

Dane a simple remapped K03S 1.8 engine in a stripped MK2 golf will be rapid. Like I said higher up (or in another thread) I know someone with one that was quicker than another mates 350bhp (dyno'd) Evo 7.

LOL - and there you go, off again..... and Dane's not even decided if and whats going into it and you're deciding it for him
the DONOR vehicle/parts will determin the costs.. and whats available or not.. Standalone remains a perfectly viable option... not just bosch me-blah blah

Yeah I'm not sure just a remap will do...

I think what ever turbo comes with the engine will need refurbing so for the extra monies it's probably worth getting it hybrided :eyebrows: And to be honest I thought it would probably be easier to use a standalone system, the simplest solution often being the best.

No descisions have been made on anything yet so it's all purely speculative... 300 brake would be friggin sweet though...

Also if were going to do Hill Climbs - Prescotts not too far away from us - then a nice quick spooling k03 hybrid + might be just the ticket.

Whatever engine desicion is made Bill I'm sure you'll be seeing alot of it... lol

Ive not decided anything for him.

I've pointed out that Motronic works fine, typically comes free with the engine, and asked why you would use anything else. I'm fully aware that standalone is a perfectly viable option, and does have some advantages over the standard ECU, but it also has disadvantages, such as its expense (even the most basic DTA ECU with no harness is coming on for £600), and typically a lack of any fault diagnostics, which can often be useful diagnosing future issues. If hes going down a well trodden path with the engine then the chances are you or other tuners will already have maps "on the shelf" for the stock ECU that are more or less ready to go with minimal tweaking.

I also dont see what the "DONOR" has to do with it? You buy what you need. Barring electronic throttle on later models which would take some thaught to retrofit, the ECU's are all pretty similar when it comes to the work involved making them work in a mk2 golf.

Whatever - I am, not wasting time arguing the toss with you AGAIN

Me7 will work, so will standalone -
and I know a lot more about DTA than you............ Diagnostics it does have

Donor is significant, as in if it is all from one vehicle, the "shopping" for other parts is simplified... and without knowing costs, you cant make any decision on whats the best way to proceed.

Dane's choice - not yours, not mine..... End of

a hybrid in a light mk2 would be pretty frisky

Yeah I just had an agruement in my head about it - more boost lower down the rev range might just make it spin up all the time - I dunno... It would probably be cheaper long run to just buy an older a3/ibiza/golf descisions descisions.

The a3 is a smaller jump in skills needed and miles less work and money, but the mk2 would be more unique (rusty)

older a3, like prawny, stripped, racer stylee.... vs building mk2 golf
hmmm

I don't know if you're for or against the A3 there Bill :)

personally, I think i'd still choose the A3 over a mk2, as it's a bit different, and nowhere near as heavy as people seem to think either!

Not sure about less money dude :S If you go as far into it as I have (all the cast wishbones and quick rack and bits and bobs) then i think the A3 could cost more to prepare to a similar spec. smaller 15'' tyres are MILES cheaper for a golf, as are things like a cage and such like as they're so much more common.

mk2 twin vr6 front and rear if you wanna go nuts but the a3 would be more reliable minor prawns problems at the mo.

Just spoke to alex and he said he's making one at the mo then later added that he willbe dropping one of to badger so pretty sure won't be done today!

:blahblah1: He was saying how he's been ill lately it's a good thing bills chasing him other wise think we would be waiting forever :whip:

I recieved my Toyosport FMIC today, only ordered in Monday afternoon. Cant beat that service :moa:

Now just fit it with out losing the fog lights and ill buy one as i really dont want to loose the fogs but want to get a bigger cooler

X2 Think thats a challange for you westy ;)

Might have to go toyosport as well anyway if ah takes any longer as need it all sorted ready to be mapped before the ring trip but really dont wanna loose my fogs :(

The Toyosport core is gigantic. I was expecting it to be big but sweet baby Jesus this is big!

The chances of keeping my fogs are minimum but I'll try my best when I get cutting and hacking this evening.

I'm not as fussed as I once was about the fogs, I just want to see cool AITs and a minimum pressure drop.

Weds comes and passes by
no FMIC

and yes....... its being made as I type this... and has been since this morning when I rang chasing........ Earlier, just on it welding.. and just now, just finished making patterns and cutting end tanks for folding.. Interesting method.. weld it this morning, and cut/fold end tanks after... Er Hmm..

So say... it will be hand delivered to me tomorrow morning.

We shall see

Shocking service just got worse :sign_omg:

I'm not to fussed about loosing their function but don't want to have pipes in place of the grills.. as much as i like the way it looks just want to keep it looking standard ... well as much as possible

Certinally wouldn't place any money on it being there tomorrow from experiance of the service as i keep getting told should be pretty much all sorted call on monday for the last 6/7 weeks, hope it does show though and things start moving as very eager for new core

I'm the same which is why I opted for black silicone instead of blinging pipes by the fogs. I might have to loose the fogs but may be able to keep the trim.

Crossed my mind about taking the fogs out but glueing the lenses to the grills so looks like they're still present lol

Ps sorry for spamming your thread Dane hope this cooler shows and its as good as we all hope its gonna be for all our sakes

Now that's a good idea

Dont worry about spamming, Dane spams everyone elses thread ;)

you waiting for this larger version?

Yeah got the mk1 ah cooler and getting high boost temps sometimes as high as 60 degrees c

Don't know if youll remember but spoke to you this week and last week regarding jetex and a wmi ally adaptor which i recieved today many thanks

Also have seen good gains on the jetex and 3" tip (thanks for the design can pm you pics etc of how managed with K26 if interested)? but pretty sure its the cooler holding it back know?

Bill can we sort something out with a toyosports one easily enough if the ah one hasnt turned up by 1 or 2? pretty much fed up of waiting for ah fabs now.

And if we can keep the fogs great if not keep them to the side and we'll sort them out later.

Im going for Alex turns up and Bill throws it back at him! I think a modded Toyosport one is the way to go
