Hi all,

I have just taken my 1999 Audi S3 to an Audi Bodyshop Specialist in my local area, and left confused about what parts/panels are covered?

Firstly, I have the obvious roof rail bubbling, which the bloke tried explaining was due to the inserts being made of aluminium? Which enhances the risk of bubbling and rust apparently? He also took readings of my both my front wheel arches which I will be putting claims in for. The drivers side is in complete rust stage, but the passenger side is just starting to form small circles and within weeks/months I expect it to start the bubbling process. Hopefully Audi can use some common sense and conclude that the 2 claims for the arches are a before and after.

My final claim is an area on the 'boot trim' around the lock... the guy this morning said that as the bubbling is on the 'trim' of my car, then this may not be covered under the 12 Year 'body paintwork' warranty. He then went onto say that the trim on the boot would have been made of aluminium also...... At this point I had to keep stum and stop from shooting myself in the foot! I wonder how many problems A2 owners have with paint seeing ther car is mostly aluminium!?

All my paint readings came back between 105-115 which the bloke said was correct for a car that wouldn't have been resprayed. (80-130 were his guidelines). The only hiccup I think is that I only have half the cars service history with Audi (Upto 2006) and seeing he took pics to send to them I'm a bit dubious about the outcome.

The 12 year warranty does not require a service history.

As I found, the bubbles can be due to paint delamination at paint pinholes and there is no actual rust there underneath on the galvanised body. If rust has started, more likely at exposed corners, then this must be because after the paint has gone, the galvanisation has washed away to expose bare steel which will rust and which they may take to indicate that the car has not been properly maintained i.e. it should have been reported sooner before rust took hold. This is where it would help to have an Audi service history as they should have spotted it earlier during service.

Yep, agreed that the Audi service would have brought that up in there report and this could have been tackled alot sooner. As my other arch is in the first few stages of this process, it's the ideal time to log it as a claim - I'm hoping that they can sort this out without any fuss and fix the other arch as a 'goodwill gesture' along with the roof rails.... will post results when I get them

Chris

Has anyone had any dealings with Audi in the S Wales area (Cardiff). I've got this rust on both sides of my 03 A3 - I'll only get the work done if it's worth while, I'm not up for a big warranty battle as I had with my last car (07 Nissan 350Z) which resulted in me getting shot of it and buying a new one (370Z).

does anyone know where they measure the paint thickness. The rust by my roof rail is only on the roof side of the rail but Im fairly sure the rear 1/4 panel has had paint but surely this is tecnically a seprate panel? Will take it in when I ge a moment but do you think i will get it approved? cheers

I took my car to the paint shop in Glasgow Breahead. They said they couldnt find my car on the system... yet when i got my coil packs done at the dealers they found it very easily? The guy said they use the same systems and he thinks the car only has 10 years Anti-corrosion? He looked at my car and said its been there too long? which its not! no readings done nothing... he tried checking my car via the service history and original invoice i have FSH. Pretty much said nothing he can do goodbye... was not happy... not a leg to stand on!

Slight Bubbling on rails and bottom of doors...

im going to call them tommorrow, ask about the coilpack recall and the paint work, however, the roof bubbling is pretty bad im in sure they wont cover that as its not as soon as it ws noticed, the arch also has the same on the near side. and ns front wing has some starting to show.
for an audi, i was quite shocked to be fair!

will update you once i know :)

been told my car isnt part of the coilpack recall. hmm,

as for the corrosion, i said i couldnt get down there this week easily so how long will it take, the VERY kind people done anything they could to help!

the bodywork manager is coming to my work between 9-10 tommorow to look at it, measure the paint, take any pictures and fill in all the forms..

very impressed so far.. will update as i can!

Hi all,

HOME TOWN; West Midlands

YEAR AND VEHICLE MODEL; Audi S3 2001 Y

DETAILS OF RUST FOUND; both roof rails and boot lid starting to bubble

TIME TO WARRANTY CLAIM FROM FIRST NOTICING IT; 2-3 weeks

HOW LONG YOU HAD OWNED THE VEHICLE AT THIS TIME; 2 months

DEALER APPROACHED; Wolverhampton Audi/ Tamworth Audi

OUTCOME (APPROVED, REFUSED), Refused Wolverhampton Audi, they said its only covered for 3 years not 12 as its paintwork problem. Tamworth Audi Waiting to hear from them.

DATE OF CLAIM June 2011

Tamworth Audi had much better customer service, the chap I spoke to Darren was very helpful he took a paint depth reading and said it was the original paint, he then took photo's which he sent off. Unfortunately the pictures didnt pick it up so he contacted me and we sorted it out to arrange to take some photo's in better lighting, the new pictures showed the corrosion very well he will be sending those off this week, I'll just have to wait to hear from them. The guy is very helpful and has gone out of his way to get these new pictures sorted so at least I know they are genuinely trying to help.

I will update as soon as I find out.

Thanks Chris.

Took mine in today for roof rails, got sent straight to body shop for the paint depth etc.

The body shop told me that I shouldn't hold out much hope for a repair as the car has had paint in the past and the fact I haven't had it that long they are likely not to offer me the goodwill repair.

After about half hour chat with the guy he informed me that it's not really covered by the warranty as the problem is paint or zinc undercoat. Hence the reason some of u guys are getting a 70 % deal. This is being done as a way of sweetening valued customers up. Basically if u have been having car serviced at Audi or u brought the car directly from a dealer they tend to be inclined to offer u the goodwill deal.

I have sent Richard an email explaining that although I have only had the car for a week or so I have owned many VAG group cars and that as a rule I always buy genuine parts from TPS etc

We shall see I guess.

Hi Folks,

I'm taking my car to the local dealer also, the names Richard Starkey and Chelsey Allot pop up every so often. Do the work for Audi at Audi HQ or the likes or what is there involvement with claims.

Cheers brm180

I'm still waiting to hear back from Stockport Audi, they measured my paint about 3 months ago, said it shouldn't be a problem and they will call be back in about 2 weeks,

Problem is the bodyshop girl Lucy is v hard to get hold of and only works 2 days a week,

Going to try again Tuesday / Wednesday this week, i le drive back down if I have to.
My car will be 12 years old at this rate! Poor communications from Stockport Audi.

Ok went to Audi in Poole.

Did the paint depth and found the whole Nearside of the car has been blown in (after some twats ladder flew off the roof and hit my NSF wing and door)
Thing is whoever sprayed also blended the top rail on the roof section to match. So as soon as this showed up Audi man said no sorry to this and to the rust bubbles on the bottom of the door and ns wheel arch (****s!)

So all im left with is a claim on the OS driver door with rust there, im just waiting for them to come back with paint defect or stone chip bull****.

I said to him ,what a load of BS nearly every Audi on the planet of this age has NS or OS corrosion on the rails, and some the doors, no matter whether there's an extra layer of paint or not.. .

Load of ****, its seriously putting me off buying an 8p in the future. Saying that, few years ago my golf 16v heat exchanger blew on me and nearly killed me with a cabin of steam @ 70mph due to a common design fault, got fobbed off then too. Seems VAG aren't keen to honour their warranties.

Few years ago misses had some issues with her alloys corroding on her MR2, we took them in, and they fitted all 4 new without a quibble. No poxy paint depth meters or gayness. What a difference.

Spoke to Audi in Poole today was told it wasn't looking good for the OSF Door bubbles at the bottom.

So to summarise:

Bubbles on NS Rail on roof - Warranty void due to area being blended in previously with dent in the middle of the NS door.
Bubbles on NS Door at bottom - Warranty void due to area being blended in previously with dent in the middle of the NS door.
Brokem Bubbles on NS Wing showing rust - Same bull****
Broken Bubbles on OS door at bottom rust clearly showing - Awaiting but not looking good apparently
Broken Bubbles on OSF Wing rusting - stone chips . same bull****

WALOB. What's the point of a Warranty??? Its almost like having insurance nowadays, not worth jack **** unless it's cut n dried and the car has a major fault. Has anyone taken this to Audi UK direct and had better luck, its obvious they're keen to avoid honouring the Warranty any way possible.

So actually the Warranty is valid as long as you leave your car on the driveway and dont drive it, or avoid any route which potentially involves stonechips.

I found the issue almost straght away on mine when i bought it. It had only just started to bubble up a bit on both sides on the roof at the very rear of the car. Took it to Taunton Audi and armed with forum knowledge of Audi trying to refuse carrying out the work i had it planned what i was going to say if they did.
The car was taken in and inspected with me present, mesurements on paint to check if it had been resprayed, which i did not, current mileage service history was taken. i was told there and then that this wouldnt be covered as it is not corrosion! The lady i was dealing with said that she would send the photos in and try for me but did not expect a good result. I told her that this is corrosion very obveisly and that if the claim was not approved then i would be taking this up with audi uk. Also trading standards! She looked at me as if to say ok easy! but i could see them taking me for a ride.
Fortunatly it was approved one day later. Result!!
i would say that go in with the attitude that i will get this approved and if not im preppard to go higher up to get a result!

NickTs3....
Do you have to pay anything towards it then mate? And did you have full Audi service history? I know that it's not required- but I expect they would look at you more favourably if you do.

Good to hear you got the result you wanted...and one day later! What a result.

Did they say why exactly it's not covered by the anti corrosion warranty? Many on here myself included have had it covered 100% under the warranty.

Here is the reply from Audi Southwest

Thank you for your response the 70% contribution as I stated was a goodwill gesture from Audi without Prejudice as this is Rust under paint and not corrosion from the inside out (meaning corrosion has gone through the whole panel, With regards to the Wing and Door these are bolt on panels and do not form part of the main structure/ chassis of the car therefore only covered by the 3 year paint warranty. Hope this clears up this matter and look forward to hearing from you soon.

It's quite sad but when anyone asks me what I think of Audi now I say rust.

Pewrsonaly id go back and argue the toss loads have had their roof rails done under warranty and saying the wing and door are not covered is cobblers, bolt on or welded on wings shouuld not make a jot of difference, try taking it to another Audi dealer.

I still need to go to my local dealer West London Audi to get mine checked out. From the sounds of all your stories i'd rather get it done myself privately! If dealers are being such asspipes about it then god knows what the bodyshop garage would be like with my car! This definitely makes me think twice.

Chris

Just been told that they have rejected all the claims put through due to some reason or another.... (stone chips, not under the 12year warranty, only 3. etcetc)
I'm pretty sure I have a good case for the roof rails, maybe not the others- but as the car hasn't got a full Audi Service History- they would not even offer the 70/30 split!
Can anyone advise the best person to get in contact with at Audi UK to try and help this along? I know names have been said previously in this thread- but are they still in the same position to help with this ?

On my 1998 1.8t both roof rails have gone, bottom of drivers door has gone and all the laquar has come of the spoiler. Only had the car three weeks so I'm guessing there's no point in going to Audi for this

Just found more corrosion on roof rails after 18 months of having them done at stockport audi.

Does anyone know how long they guarantee their work for?

Thanks

I'm sure I read somewhere that once a panel has been painted under warranty then the liability transfers to the dealership which carried out the work for a period of 3 years. Maybe someone can confirm?

is it to late for my 1999 A3 1.8t to get anywhere with the rust issue?

is it to late for my 1999 A3 1.8t to get anywhere with the rust issue?

I'll let you know come the end of the week!! Noticed rust on my roof around a month ago and finally got the chance to give the car a clean and run it down to my local audi. Not overly hopeful after reading all the reasons on here that people have been turned down for. The car doesnt have full audi history, and has never been to the dealer that I took it to. Only good things I suppose is that I've owned the car for 3 years and the rust is very minimal (at the moment), also the warranty man said that the car was in very nice condition. He took paint depth readings but didnt say whether or not it has been resprayed at any time. He said that he should know the outcome from Audi in 2 days, but more than likely will be Friday. I'll update once he has got back to me. The car is 12 years old in 4 months so I'm sure they will wriggle out of it somehow. Fingers crossed!
