Anyone else with this problem on 2006 2.0 TDi? Injectors...

I had this from VOSA

Audi have not called a recall at the moment, but as yet don't know what the final outcome will be. We have had notification that Audi will change the injectors when they fail free of charge up to 84 months old. But this does not prevent the problem from happening in the first place so we are still working on it.

Lespaul, im sure your only passing on what vosa have said, if my maths are correct 84 months = 7years , this is promising?!?
Needless to say many of us had our injectors replaced at independant garages so im still waiting to see where this all goes?
I could be all pink and fluffy and say we want audi to recognise there is a major road safety issue going on here and prevent someone from a fatal accident.
Yes that is partialy true but personally i want the £2k back they cost me and dont mind saying it!

Some people want it for safety. Some for the money. Me? Both of those, and plus I'm just sick of cycling to work and looking at the 1.6 ton paperweight sitting in the garage that I dare not move for fear of ending up rear-ended and/or coming home on a tow-truck!

...3rd pick up as fualty by Audi dealer at long life service ... and last shows signs and was replaced

Interesting. Does this mean that there is some way to see the fault coming? If there were, I might trust it to take me down to the shops, though this would obviously be far from satisfactory...

When my car went it was on a long service plan. It was serviced at 18000 miles then was due again at 36000. It was out of warranty when the next service came round & the local Honda dealership was running a promotional service deal so it went there, hardly a back street outfit!
Two months later sat in a lay-by at 2am waiting for a tow truck.
Yes I would like my money back for repairs but ultimately I know this is unlikely.
Hoping for a recall to have a modified part fitted so I can have a reliable means of transport for me and the familly.
Don't audi realise what damage this does to there brand, unless it's corrected then I'm shopping for a new car early next year when the injectors I have are out of warranty!

I've just pulled out of buying a 56 170 S-Line Quattro I was due to collect on Saturday because of stories of many similar issues. It's a far bigger issue across the VAG group than can be attributed to the fact only people with complaints about an issue post on forums (so you don't get to hear from all the happy owners).

Tried to persuade Audi UK to replace the injectors pre-emptively as its a ticking time bomb, but it's fix on fail. Great, so I've got to wait until it dies on me, which at best is inconvenient, at worst fatal.

It is the safety aspect which worries me too. And it should be worrying Audi's insurers, because there will be fatalities.

I was heading to Leeds in the outside lane of the M1 this morning when, without warning, I lost all power, and saw the glowplug light flicker briefly. I miraculously steered across the busy slower lanes of traffic to the hard shoulder. Felt incredibly lucky not to get hit, at the very least.

Great recovery by the RAC, back to my local Audi garage. Still waiting to hear from them.

The RAC guy was an ex VW/Audi mechanic and knew all about this problem. Commonest fault he sees with Audis, apparently.

Anyone heard anything from VOSA ?

I'm just hoping vag are not getting off the hook with 'we'll fix them when they breakdown'

This is becoming so frustrating.
I don't want to service my car with audi as I know I can get it done cheaper with an independent.
But if audi service it next, at least if it goes again they may show me some goodwill?

I feel for all you guys who have had injector problems, Its put my off getting this 2.0l pd engine. Ive done a couple at work which have cut out, simple resistance check on the injectors can narrow it down to which one has gone down, and it seems when 1 goes it pulls the whole lot down, unlike the 1.9 pd which didn't and just missfired with engine light. As far as im aware it seems be the siemens injector controlled ecus that do this, ive heard that the bosch ones don't cut the engine out, The ones i repaired were 2005 and 2006, 2005 car had the dredded oil chain tensioner fault done previously and the 2006 one was a geared oil pump, both needed 1 injector doing, v expensive as only could get the injector from vw,I agree with u guys about safety , carn't be good when it does cut out,I carn't see vag recalling them tbh.

Today I received a phone call from audi um asking me if I was happy with the service I have been receiving from my local dealer needless to say I think the poor girl had wished she had never asked. But on a positive note she was aware of the vag/vosa meetings and seemed to think that there will be an announcement very soon we will see

I cannot believe I've just stumbled across the threads regarding the injector problems. Was going to pick a 57 170ps up a week on Saturday - looks like I've just thrown a £1000 away. Better that though than my wife being injured in a crash. VAG should be ashamed of themselves

This from a member of honest john forum who had his second injector failure yesterday ( whilst overtaking a lorry )...........

latest update on my case - VW customer care have agreed to replace all 3 old injectors with new ones free of charge.....that was just too easy for something costing so much. They know this is gathering momentum and wont be long before they are forced to recall. Dot let VW retailers fob you off with pathetic goodwill of 25% if this happens to you or anyone else.

Audi are offering to replace single faulty injector and wiring loom FOC as goodwill gesture. Apparently they can't tell whether the injectors are from good or bad stock. They are quite happy for us to play Russian Roulette with the remainder, apparently.

Can anyone techy out there tell me whether the wiring loom feeds one or all the injectors? If it feeds all of them would this reduce the chance of further failures? Audi service receptionist say its one per injector.

I had a plumber round today. He was telling me that he has a VW Passat. He said that one day he was driving and it stopped engine cut the lot. He was amazed when I said I bet it's the injectors. VW replaced if FOC.

I have emailed Audi UK today and see what they have to say.

Hi, I had a problem last week and came across your site. Took the car into Audi and filled out VOSA form etc.

I've had 1 injector replaced now under goodwill (not sure about loom). Also had a return call from VOSA who infomred me that this is gathering momentum (about 89 reported issues in last 3 months, so about 1 a day).

I have had the car back for 4 days and last night got a DPM warning light (odd considering my main drive is 30 miles of motorway driving). This morning on the way in I to work I went for some spirited driving to try and regenerate the DPM and ended up with a flashing Glow plug light to compliment the DPM warning - have now dropped car back at AUDI.

Is there any chance there is a link with Injector replacement and DPM issue/glow plug system?

Cheers
Dan

Great result from my dealer who proactively replaced the other 3 injectors and the loom with zero contribution on my part. I did let them know I was coming in to them risking a 4 hour drive rather than taking it to the nearest dealer (who I've never used for service), but maybe the fact that they've serviced all my cars and supplied all but one, helped. I can now sell my car with confidence - or start to enjoy it again...

Can you share with dealer offered this service? Thanks.

I have had this e-mail from vosa today .....

The reason the ECU shuts down is due to an oil sealin the plug of the Piezo actuator failing, this causes a short to earth. This short would then cause permanent stress to the DC converter so the system switches off to protect further damage to the ECU. The injectors have now been modified to prevent this occurring again.I hope that this brief explanation helps. The VW Group are now replacing all injectors on failed vehicles free ofcharge.

My reply .......

Do you think that due to the safety issues here that VAG should replace these injectors prior to what looks like imminent failure ?

Nottingham Audi have replaced all four injectors + wiring loom without charge. Excellent service.

Spoke with VOSA chap following my report and he confirmed 90 cases in past 3 months. The problem is electrical integrity as the wiring loom passes through the manifold. The old injectors have only a single oil seal whereas new injectors (from November onwards) have double seals. (Sounds like the fix on the Shuttle SRBs following the Challenger disaster?). Let's hope the new injectors fix the problem . . . .

nevermind speaking to VOSA, ask Bosch technical how many calls they get on these......

So can I march into my local dealership and demand they replace them free of charge before they fail and leave me heading into oncoming traffic with my three year in the back, that's I need to know?

I think it is more likely that VOSA have had 90 forms from us

Sounds a lot, but that's only one per English county per quarter - which is why garages may be saying they're unaware. I suspect the actual incidence is considerably higher, having spent a few hours with the RAC guys, but only a minority actually report to VOSA.

if Audi has swapped the injector for "free" then chances are I wouldn't have even thought of bringing up this topic.

Either way, I have sold off mine to a dealer at a loss, and submitted all the paperwork for thee repairs as well. I can't have my family driving around in that while VAG decide whether our lives are statistically worth saving.

I will still be fighting this and will still try and get my repair money back.

And where VOSA are getting one report per day, Audi are most likely repairing one a week per dealership... you think they'd be stupid enough to get these customers to report to VOSA, or even mention the fact there is an ongoing case with them? They're getting 1 a day from people who are disgruntled. I guarantee there will be even less people reporting now that VAG will be replacing them for "free" and quietly. It's only people who have been smached with a £1000 bill that thought "hang on a minute, why am I paying for your f*ck up? And why are you not doing the rest?"....

Sorry to hear, but I totally understand. Glad to have you still involved, a lot of "us" on the other side of the globe counting on you guys, for your efforts with VOSA are about the best in the world right now. I have some potential action down under finally happening as well, purely on the safety issue. Seems our government agents are interested in the fact the car shuts down, but we are a long way from having your sort of numbers, again, most people either give up the fight, or like most of my 2.0 TDI driving mates, get out.

I've considered getting out of my potential land mine as well, and won't be buying anything from the VAG group ever again, purely on the principle of disinterest from VAG.

BMW is looking good right now, apart from that BMW trolling w#nker earlier.

New injectors? I've had 2 sets of refurbs so far according to the part numbers, supplied by Audi. Can you find out what part numbers were used and post them, just to see if you've picked up my old ones in this process...

...BMW is looking good right now...

I got a 5 series Touring, I was initially going to get an A6 Avant but bought the BMW on ratings, test drives, total space and most importantly now, the cost. I have always loved my A4 and will most likely get a B7 RS4 sometime down the line... but this time it's had to go unfortunately.

I will be updating with the results of my refund claim on the initial replacements, it will probably be weeks before the final letters are sent back and forth. Success or failure, I'll let everyone know the process and where I went right or wrong, maybe someone else will better luck, or experience in small claims court (maybe a lawyer will break down and come across this thread eh!)

I had PN 03G130073TX fitted about 6 weeks ago. That'll be a refurb then...

In related news, a question that I also asked on Greg's new Facebook group: If we now know the problem to be an oil seal, could a simple remove, re-seal and replace be enough to prevent this happening? (at least for a year or two)

Nevermind, Greg very kindly responded on the Facebook page (comments on one of the photos). The answer: Not really.

No part numbers on my invoice. Sorry. Will ask when I return the call from 'Audi Customer Service'.

The more I read this thread the more it feels like I own a time bomb... Our avant is on 128K though so maybe they've already been done? I shall take a look through the paper work and see what I can find out!

Being an ex-company car it's always been main dealer serviced. Do I need to get Audi to do the servicing next time if I want them to honour free replacements further down the line?

That's the question VOSA was not able to answer when I asked them... I asked whether all "owners" were going to be able to make use of this temporary solution, or whether it's all "FASH" customers... they could not confirm... this was over a week ago.

If it is only FASH, then their current "offer" means nothing because we were at this stage in September... with some arguing, any FASH customer could have acheived that anyway.

Get onto the page people, even just to "like". We need numbers to shame VAG into doing something.....it currently stands at 13, which would hardly make any brand quake in their boots.

Still depends on the exact site of oil ingress, could be that the new loom will fix the problem, and I will be installing one myself soon, and compare the old and new plugs, and post everywhere! I'm still guessing like most people, be real helpful for VAG to release some FACTS...

I've just spoke to my local dealership after my injector failed 5 weeks ago - Audi CS didn't even have the courtesy to contact me after i rasied a call with them (4 weeks a go).

Anyways, their policy is that as long as you've had at least one service with a dealer, they are willing to swap all injectors and looms for free. If you haven't had a service, a work around the guy advised is that you could do a small service - for £149, prior to the injector and loom replacement, and then you'll be able to get your parts replaced for free.
