Telling the difference between the 140 and 170 2.0 TDI

ok, just seems odd that the 140 i test drove had 1 exhaust pipe and the 170 i bought had 2? ( hence why i believed him? )

Ah I think you're talking about a MY11 TDI 140. They do come with a single exhaust.
Earlier models (2004-2009/2010) all came with twin exhausts though, apart from the 1.6.

Here's a photo of an older 140 with twin exhausts:

Ah makes sense now, I didn't consider the reg lol

Should know better than to trust a salesman

Makes me wonder now if my S3 quattro really does have 2 engines , one for the front and one for the back?

I noticed yesterday when I washed ans wxed my new 2.0 TDI-140 Sportback there is a small sticker inside the door opening near the door locking pin which says it's a 2.0 TDI-140ps.

But certainly the sticker in boot or the inside front cover of the service book should say, at the beginning of the fourth line from the top, 103kw for a 140 and 125kw for a 170 following by the gearbox type and month/year the car was built.

For the last 6 years, I was under the impression that i had a 170 and to my surprise went to have a look in the boot for that sticker and did not like what I have found. It says 103Kw, on the registration paper it says 103Kw. But was told by the dealer when i bought it that it was 170.
I ****** insured it as such not knowing that it was a 140.

Is there any kind of way that i might prove the dealer sold it to me under false pretence?
Why doesn't the registration paper say 140 or 170 instead of a stupid code?

That explain the crappy looking exhaust.

When did the 170 come out? After 2005, I think.

Anyway, I reckon you'd have a hard time proving you were sold the wrong thing all that time ago, unless you have paperwork from the dealer stating your car is a 170.

Mine is a 54 reg but was registered in January 2005.
I doubt it will have 170 written anywhere, unless you when you buy it, you know to look for that sticker.
Which I didn't at the time.

I am convinced the saleman sold it to me as such.
The only joy might be that my insurance next year will be cheaper.

if you have a smart phone (android/iPhone) just download the My Car Check app, the free bit gives you the info you require by just typing the reg number in.
Thats what i used when looking for a 170 Quattro to make sure i wasn't wasting my time traveling to view them.
