This is what I have seen in my time at a Dealership and tuners:

1.8 20VT 225 engine:

Standard BHP on a 225 - Bent Rod
Mapped BHP on a 225 - Bent/snapped Rod
Big Turbo BHP on a 225 - Bent/snapped Rod

In short, you could just be really unlucky and have a 'weak' rod from factory...

But in greater depth on the 225:

Stock tuning is very unlikey to have a rod issue
Mapped tuning is very unlikey to have a rod issue

Hybrid K04 with as many bolt on bits and tuning I have seen this to bend rods, this was from when I worked at another tuner and I think in total I re-call around 3-5 have this issue.

Anything over 330-350bhp (same ish torque) could do with a rod replacement, but this could depend a little on turbo set up:

For example I know of a lot of IHI turbo kits at over 330bhp with no rod issues but cars with a GT28RS with around 330bhp have rod issues.

Just my 2ps

But as mentioned.... you could just be unlucky :(

IHI's dont produce big torque, unlike their garrett counterparts...... one potential reason.
heavy breathing engines, injesting their own oil fumes, causing high CF's det, unknown to the owners is a very likely causal factor imho.. 80k-100k+ milage on a lot of these now.. well "used".
High timing pull, poor octane fuel (effective from oil fume) can combine to make from some serious cylinder pressures, which will bend/snap rods. Nothing to do with the tune or remap, just wear and tear.
when these cars were new, the maps were written, they're older now, and what worked on fresh components is posisbly not as appropriate now, without checking and logging once done, to be sure whats going on. (dyno + logging etc, before and after....)

i was told years ago the bam engine had the strongest rods of the many 1.8t formats, is this true does anyone know.

The rods are identical to every other 20mm rod fitted to 1.8T's, and are also the same as the rods fitted to most older 058 block engines, such as the mk2 golf 16v etc.

Rods have NOT bent - ON AMD STAGE 1, Garrett GT28RS

* What stage map they were on e.g. stage-1, stage-2 - STAGE 1
* What map they were on e.g. CustomCode, Revo, etc. - AMD
* What max bhp they had - APPROX 300+bhp
* What max torque they had - ?????lb/ft Tq
* How old the car was - 1991 Golf Gti with a 2000 APY S3 Engine

I've only driven it 50 miles so I may need to update this....

APY 20v Mk2 Garrett GT28RS. IT PASSED!!!! Got an MOT and Tax disc today!!! - Club GTI

I'm about to go Revo stage 2 on standard rods but I'm hoping to get it mapped with a comfortable amount of torque. I'll let you know how it goes.

Hope it all goes well, aslong as everything else is healthy then the risk will be lower i guess, i know if i had choosen Revo stage2 then my chances of bending a rod would have been very high because of my fuel pump struggling to maintain pressure after 5k

Well I'm getting it done by Bill so I'm sure he'll pick anything up that needs addressing. Fingers crossed.

Just wondering sandip, why do you think a weak fuel pump would have increased your chances of bending a rod.

Running lean on full boost and high rpm, more heat which with time may have taken its toll on my rods plus it's already done 130k lol

To be honest though mine was running very lean when it was overboosting but luckily my egt's were low

Aw ye, I remember your car was running really lean. I would have said myself that you would be less likely to bend a rod due to the mass within the cylinder being less.

How is your car coming along anyway.

Not bad thanks, needs to go back to get the map finished off. Need to get some logs done soon just to see how things are running

Good stuff. I havent read your build thread recently, will have a nose later.
