So I wanted a bit louder exhaust, therefore I decided to take apart my milltek exhaust and see what was inside.....
Top cut off:

Inside again:

The stuff that was inside it, like feathers crossed with fibreglass, it was rammed with the stuff but took it out before I took a photo:

The section I cut out:

Having replaced it, I have decided it is not loud enough (hardly louder at all) so I will have it back off and remove some more.

The top is sealed with a metal plate currently screwed on over the hole but will be a piece of stainless either welded or riveted on when i'm happy with it.

any ideas for which part to cut out next would be appreciated thanks :)

Lol iv no idea but will be following ;)

After seeing these pics I've decided I'm going to sell my milltek and get a different back box,
I've wanted mine lauder for ages but didn't realise there was a spaghetti jungle in my back box lol.

i would drill massive holes all in it! in the bits where you cut it out.. or cut out alot more of it!

make sure you do the nuts up tight when you refit it, if you leave them slightly loose i have heard they can cause the spare tyre to go flat! :D

You will probably find that most back boxes from who ever will be similar inside to the Miltek.

Some serious editing has gone on in this thread, where has everything gone.

On a more serious note- the perforated tubes are what you want to get rid of if you want it louder.if you want to keep it as loud as possible in that back box then weld a 180 degree section where the perforated tube starts to the split for the tailpipes.alternatively as you have cut it all apart anyway then just do away with the whole box and weld a straight section to the tips.

Instead of having that bend in the back box,try and put dome of that drilled pipe straight across to the tail pipes. Does that make sense lol?

basically a straight though back box then LOL

nice i like;)

Those comments were important to warn people about the danger of feathers on rods

Probably for the best to be fair, before it gets out of hand with the rod business.

Ye I know. Was pretty funny though some of the posts, especially one Andy put up about using that feather stuff to fly lol. Oh well back to the milltek.

Depends on what type of feathers they use inside..........goose..........pigeon..........peacock................i don't think this post will be up here very long again.

Miltek cat back from Awsome GTI around 500 fitted, discreet back box, subtly loud, not boy racer loud.

All decent back boxes should have that in.. it is a silencer....lol.. poor milltek, you could have got a few quid for that to pay for a straight through system....

sorry i was including the cat, iirc the price was from AMD

I was up AMD the other week having a service and they have a special offer on for the Milltek system

Milltek Cat Back System + Fitting + Re-map = £650ish Inc VAT IIRC (Free fitting and half price re-map)

Pretty good deal I think for what you get, compared to if you were doing them individually.

they could be this guys he dont look to happy he now knows where his feathers have gone:lmfao:

What about the nature of the turbo recycling the energy from the exhaust reducing the noise.... It's not as simple as just cutting and removing the inside of the box.

What he's saying is, that a turbo car will never be as loud as an n/a car generally, because the turbo itself takes a lot of the exhaust gas energy.

turbos are often jokingly refered to as a rotary muffler!

Learn something new every day.

so would a N/A car have more rasp and a turbo more burble or am i getting wrong end of stick

but it is as simple as cutting and removing the inside of the box? lol the inside of the box is what makes it quieter! yeah we all know the turbo acts as a silencer sort of but not to as much of a degree as a center or back box, run the car with no exhaust at all and it will still be loud as ****

no you're completely right, turbo's tend to have a more muted sound with less of a rasp to it.

I've fired mine up with just a 3'' DP fitted and NO exhaust beyond that, and even then it's not as loud as my 1380 n/a mini engine with a twin box system!

the turbo takes out a fair bit of the sound, laws of energy and what not, energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed. we all know turbo's create heat, and require kinetic energy to turn the shaft, and as the turbo is not parasitic like a supercharger, that engery has to come from somewhere

The benefits by removing the silencers are massive in respect of improved turbo spool, reduced lag between gear changes and so on. There is no benefit to having large bore systems as the restriction is always the exit on the turbo, but you don't need to worry about back pressures with a turbo setup. Modern cars with catalysts have huge potential, if you remove the catalyst or change to a sports catalyst this helps gas flow, and therefore faster spool and reduced lag. However noise levels are always muted in comparisons to n/a as already stated.

i bet it popped and flamed like mad with just the dp lol! :) might start it up when ive got the 28rs on with only the downpipe on and see how loud it is :)

my A3 has a completely straight through system with no cat anyway as it's a track car, it pops and flames constantly with the full exhaust on too!

My A4 was loud and raspy as f*ck when it didnt have any box`s in it just a pipe..Had to sort a backbox for it which took the rasp away and gave it a tone instead of BAAAAAAHHHH rusty chainsaw...Although wasnt asloud as what my Yaris still with cat and RS*R backbox used to be but still loud enough. Still pretty loud now with the MIJ can on the back but a more pleasant sound to what it was before. Thankfully didnt get rid of the gunshot esq pops on downchanges that make young girls scream walking past (i like to do it often and also making people swerve behind me when it pops haha)
