Well I finally picked my new B6 S4 Avant today.......Nagaro Blue, Matching half leather, full Audi history, 37k miles.

Had a great 140 mile journey home - the car never missed a beat and very pleased with its motorway cruising pace (although 80mph at 3k rpm in 6th is a tad silly)......mixed emotions though as the windscreen gained a 5 pence crack from a stone flicked up by a white 599 Ferrari doing Mach 5 north bound :banghead:.........hopefully new insurance should cover this but I havent checked small print of policy yet.

Only thing I need to do in the imediate future (apart from a new/fixed windscreen) is two new front tyres - recommendations welcome ??

looking forward to Audi ownership :racer:

Yeah the 3k in 6th gear cruising is a bit of a joke. I've goodyear F1 asymetrics on mine for less than 10k and my fronts are already down to less than 3mm so I need new tyres soon as well. I agree with getting all 4 at the same time too.
and by the way its spelt Nogaro :thumbsup:

Yeah I heard/read somewhere that if you change one side you should change the other (left to right) but I didnt realise that meant back to front as well......blimey !!.......although if I had my head screwed on last night the two receipts in the history file of all four tyres being changed twice was a give away.

I dont understand that though as they dont wear evenly back to front anyway so surely the grip rates vary almost immediately as you drive away even with new tyres on all four corners :think:
 
Its all about the rolling radius. next time I think I am going to do a tyre rotation at 4k or something to try and get a bit more life out of them.

Also am I right in thinking that if I upgraded the rear anti roll bar to reduce understeer the front wear would be reduced which might make it more even?
 
Well thats four days of S4 ownership and so far so good. :yahoo:

Love the all round in gear performance of the V8- feels like endless torque, and to be fair I'm not seeing much point at the moment of reving past 4k.......to be honest I was a little suprised that it doesnt feel more lively above this but I'm kind of just putting this down to it being a big V8, even so it still feels pretty brisk !!

The only thing I'm struggling with is getting smooth changes from 1st to 2nd - havent quite mastered it yet.....anyone else find this ?

Had to change 'some' tyres, originally after researching it I was going to just change the fronts with the Bridgestones that where on there - this would have set me back £175 a corner, but after much diliberation with my local tyre guy I ended up changing all four with Kuhmo's at a total of £475......lets see how they go.

Getting the chain rattle on start up but only for less than a second so not too concerned....going to change the oil soon which hopefully will sort this.

Glad you're getting on well with it. I've not driven an S4, but if its anything like my 2.5TDi 1st gear is very low, and can be a bit snatchy. I only ever use it to get rolling really.

There's a sticky in the General Chat section about posting pictures. You need to upload them to a photo sharing website such as Photobucket, and then copy the IMG tag below the image and paste it into the thread.
 
Don't worry about the short rattle on start up its normal and i doubt an oil change will change it.

With regard to the sensation of speed, you ain't going to really feel how quick it is as the power delivery is so smooth and linear, combined with solid build quality -it ain't no civic type r!

Just floor it in second from 20, through third and fourth and watch how quickly it passes a ton!
 
If you've never had a car with an engine like this, you won't believe how quick you've just gone from 60-140 with a couple of thousand rpm and another gear to go.
 
it maybe just me but the Kuhmo's are not a very good tyre for the S4
 
Hi mate, I've also just bought an S4 avant in silver too but hopefully picking it up from the dealer on wednesday. I've been waiting over a week for it as they put it into Audi to get the clutch changed before I get it, as they told me it was needing done when I test drove it, but whilst in there they spotted a small oil leak, which they are fixing, and also some bracket under the car to get replaced. Although the salesman was telling me his boss isn't too happy as the bill so far is about £2500, so glad I bought it from a garage and not privately which is what I normally do. But still can't wait to get the car and glad Audi have found and fixed any problems before I get the car for some peace of mind.

Cool, sounds like you avoided some big bills there fella......I'm expecting more though over the coming years, I get the feeling there is no way you can run these cars on a budget !!

my reason is
iv had cars with them fitted and they dont grip very good chuck the s into a nice corner or roundabout you will feel what i meen
i also know a good few managers at tyre shops

Oh I see I thought you meant it was S4 specific.......considering they are about 40% cheaper than the Bridgestones that it came on I'm not expecting them to perform to that degree I suppose, but we will see.
 
I had Bridgestone Potenzas fitted to my old Impreza when I bought it. Apparently they're good in the dry but I never found out cos they were ckufin' lethal in the wet - and that was on a 1280 KG car. Smashed kerbstones with an S4, I'd have thought.
 
I wouldnt skimp on tyres. Given they are the only thing between you & the road, surely spending another £30 a corner over Kuhmos (for example) is worth it to protect yourself/family & the car.
 
I got mine for under £389 delivered from here (they're a little more now though).

They did well in tests and were an alternative to the excellent Goodyear Eagle F1s.

I bought these tyres last year for my wifes new Bravo sport and they were great tyres until the snow came and were absolutely useless, as they are a summer tyre, where as the year before I had the Bridgestone Potenzas and the were great all round including the snow.

I think there in lies the slight problem with these kinds of things.......how well a tyre performs is so subjective with some many variables - the condition of your car, your driving style, the condition of your local roads, your own ability, your local climate etc....

One drivers perfect tyre could simply be another drivers nightmare due to so many reasons.

I think you have to make an educated choice for yourself and make a decision after this.......hence why I will start off with the Khumo's and make my own mind up !!

I found the goodyear f1's excellent in the snow as well even for a summer tyre. I think what killed mine is my tracking is out slightly as the fronts have just gone in the last 3k. Going to go for the newer goodyear f1's next I think

I would imagine any discrepency in tyre pressure or alignment with the quattro's would cause early wear.
 
Don't be forced into buying 4 tyres all at the same time. This has been discussed on here before, Audi say you need to keep the same rolling radius, i.e the same size of tyres but that the quattro system will cope just fine with the difference in tyre wear on the front and rear axles. Obviously the extremes are just that, but why would you be running 0mm on the rear and 8mm on the front as you would just replace all 4. If you have two good tyres then there is no issue with replacing the other two. At the end of the day, not all quattros wear tyres evenly, depends how you drive.
 
I'd agree with that. I've never replaced tyres in more than pairs and unless the discrepancy is huge I never would, any amount of steering lock, roundabouts, bends etc will cause the wheels to rotate at different speeds, although I accept this is for shorter periods it shows that the diff has that inbuilt variance.

Yeah I came to that conclusion after reading other stuff here and on other forums. I replaced all four in the end as the rears only had another 500-1000 miles in them and the tyre man offered me a better deal to do all four......plus I held on to the old rears just in case I needed them.
 
I went through few sets of performance tyres in my A4 and Mondeo.
Both cars had 225/40/18.
Loved Bridgestone potenza on dry but not very good when wet.
GoodYear F1 - lovely tyre but did max 8k miles on a set.
Pirelli Pzero - My favourite. Excellent in wet and dry. Did 10k miles on a set.
From cheaper tyres I really was impressed with Nankang NS2. Better than potenza on wet.
And I really hated Kumho Ecsta XT. Not good on any surface.
I always use camskill.
GY F1 is cheaper 30-40quid a corner comparing to kwik fit.
 
Pointless replacing tyres the still have life in them, with mine I had to pod out for all 4 as the front's were fubar'd and the rears had only another 1kish in them - Falken 452's would never have them again, pants grip and too much road noise. This time I went for conti sport 3's and fair to say very happy with them. Excellent all-roader and when the snow came they also perfomed very well :)
