I've only just got my A3 (an '07 TDi Sport) and when one of the guys at work first saw it he said to make sure I always carried a litre of oil with me. He said he had one as a company car and it always needed topping up.
I thought he must've had a problem there, but on page 242 of the handbook it says oil consumption can be up to 0.5L per 1000km. That's a lot! My service indicator says 615 days until my next service, which by my calculation is about 9 litres of oil consumed .

From your experience, how often is normal to need to add oil?

But surely not that much? How often do you top up yours?
I had a Golf GTTDi 1.9 PD and that never needed a drop between services, so I just assumed the 2.0 TDi in the Audi's would be the same.

I have had my 2.0 140 since late december .I have topped it up three times
Its not long had a service and its on the long life service so no way is it lasting that long .
It is a bit annoying tbh

BMW's are the same, I used to work there and advise customers that the consumption could be as much as that, Ive used 1 litre in the last 5000 miles in my '07 Tdi 140 SB

I don't need to touch my 2005 BKD PD140 between services (every year doing about 8.5K per year).

never topped mine in 3 years, never needed it!

Some use it, some dont! Owners of the petrol 2.0TFSI will also vouch how some do and some dont!

I've had my 2.0 TDI Sport 140 since the end of October and I've not had to put a drop of oil in. I do about 50 miles a day. Still says Max on the dip stick.

I think I'd better get a bottle from Audi. I haven't had mine long enough to know if it's a 'user' or not.

Be v careful i was about to join A1 a fe weeks ago when min oil light came on my A3 2.0tdi Sportback Sport 59 plate...im like that cant be right...anyway stopped luckily about 2 miles from an audi dealer not my local asked them to check as i found the dipstick quite hard to read when i have checked...sure enough min oil any further and it would have caused damage....so i topped up using oil i had in my last A3 2.0tdi which i never touched. Had to buy some more from the dealer whilst i was there as the remains of my 1 litre didnt take it to max.....used another 1/2ltre to top it back to max...just checked again as im paranoid now and its dropped again just below max not sure whether to top up or not as its first service is due in sept. Ill be keeping a close eye on it but never used any in my last A3 from new after 2 years this one also had since new nearly 2 years and so far 1.5litres of oil used....guess you just dont know...

oil use is normal for most cars bmw's are the worst for it they always use alot of oil , but agree the tfsi engines are just as bad they use alot of oil same as the tdi engines , werid tho as mine doesnt budge at all between services still bang on the max and ive done nearly 6000 miles since last service , as said some use it some dont
