the car has the a.b.s light on and a yellow circle with a yellow triangle in the middle any help would be great as im looking to buy the car cheap i know the a.b.s will be a sensor but a ant got a clue wot the other light can be thanks for looking

You have an abs fault probably, a fault code read will tell you. I have the same error, vcds pointed to the front left wheel and sure enough the abs cable is split and bared, i have a new cable to fit when i get round to it. My brakes work as normal but of course the abs wouldnt work if needed.

If its *actually* a 2001 car chances are it was manufactured in the middle of 2000. If it is pre facelift it doesn't have ESP, but does have an ABS light which physically says A.B.S.

hes said the abs and traction light is on!

most likely a wheel speed sensor tbh, get it code read to tell you where to look!

where you based? someone with vag com might be able to help?

ESP equiped cars have a switch on the dash board, if you press it the word ESP lights up on your display, it means its switched off. If you have an ABS fault code etc then the EPS is probably not working as well.

If it is registered in 2001 it could actually be a 2002 MY car, they start building them after their summer break.

Yeah, ok, but regardless of when it was built, if it doesnt have the ESP switch on the dash, thats the switch that allows you to turn it off, then surely its not got ESP.

esp + abs use the abs sensors

it'll most likely be an abs sensor on one of the wheels

both of mine came on when i had my suspension changed, they went off after a 20 miles drive, ignition off, started car an hour later, so if's you had any worked done on the steering/suspension take that in mind

Im not a muppet, no need to state the obvious.

What I am saying is that pre facelift cars have the same sign come up on the DIS if you have a non ABS related brake fault, such as low fluid level.

I know this because last time I drove Prawns car the sign came up on DIS and I drove it home (300 miles) with it flashing away at me because the master cylinder had popped its clogs and I had to use the handbrake for 90% of the braking.

Also, it can have ESP with no switch on the dash. There are a fair few imported A3's which are 1.8t Sport and SE and have ESP but no switch on the dash to turn it off. Easily identified by not having the ESP button, different seats and a four spoke poverty spec steering wheel.

Seriously, I got in the car and drove to work and HONESTLY never had to brake at all. Finished work, got straight onto the A38 again with no braking, got it up to temp' and boosted my way to (Cough) 70MPH (Cough). Put my foot on the brakes and SWEET FA happened, to say I was worried would have been an understatement. Basically it was my "free" ticket home from Plymouth, and I couldn't afford the train and HAD to get home, so not driving it wasn't an option. Driving Prawns car is hairy anyway, let alone with no brakes haha!
