3 door Vs Sportback....

Okay - if I'm to hold my hands up on this, and admit a valid REASON for buying a Sportback, it's because my Dad ain't well, and he MAY need to be rushed to hospital at any time. Therefore, having him trying to clamber over my 3 door seats would bring tears to my eyes - especially if he marked the leather !!!

So, it was practicality for me, and keeping the interior in top shape, for why I bought a SB.

NOW.....looking around at all these common 3 doors, I'm glad I chose the SB route instead.....<waiting for the 3 door war> :whistle2:

I like the saloon (concept).

This!! It is gorgeous

Krims excuse is the most valid so far!
And I wouldn't say all 3 doors are common, as most of the members have modded theirs in some way shape or form.
Everyone has their idea of uniqueness :)

I'm genuinely sorry to hear about your dad. But couldn't he sit in the front?

what you gonna do lie him on floor while you spend 2 mins reclining the seat:think:
saloon is a A4 not a hatchback
a sports car is a coupe not a hatch back in my eyes generally coupes have only 2 doors
any way 3 door is more popular so it should always win in a vote
as i have said rear side windows look daft on 3dr in my eyes, makes you wonder if they designed the A3 as a 5dr and the 3dr is the compromise they had to make.would give them an excuse for not sorting them rear side windows out!

takes me 10 secs to move seat back after ourlass has drove car:yes:

This is why i went for manual seats lol (new argument for Aythree to start perhaps manual vs electric seats!?) plus the marginal weight saving and of course with alcantara you can do away with the heaters too - the only electric bit I wanted was the lumbar support.. fooking wouldn;t be without it:lazy:

oh lumbar support is very nice indeed!
one thing that bugs me is why does my passenger seat have manual tilt and slider but it has lumbar support and is heated ****** bewildering to me you pay for electric seats you expect both to be not 1 and a half:huh::huh:

Just to add another thing to the three door vs shedback argument.. I need to get me wheelchair next to the driver's seat to transfer in, and the 3 door has much, much longer doors that open a LOT wider - therefore making access for me (in the minority I guess) a lot easier..

Well both my seats are manual tilt n slide, but heated as well. I don't think theres lumbar though :( how do you adjust it?

there are round buttons around the size of the base of a beer bottle with four dimples in on the door side of the seats they are in the base plastic:o.k:

That's what I thought they would be, I've seen them on other Audi's pretty sure I'm without :(
Thanks though :)

3 door all the way, just changed from a 4 door, I have kids but its not me having to climb in the back or get out for them.

Cheers mate :)

The problem lies in that I'll have to cart my Mum as well. I felt real bad when we found out he had the Big C, and my Sis had to drive us to hospital every day as I had the TT back then. It's also easier if they want to go out somewhere and he's not up to driving - that's why 5 doors work better for me ;)

Yeah of course mate, makes sense.

Hope it all works out as well as possible with your dad.

Kriminal hope your dad fully recovers ..So you can buy a 3 door when hes fixed up mate .;)

Thanks buddy, nice try, although without dwelling on it too much, as we're supposed to haven't 3/5 door fights, it's terminal cancer unfortunately (prostate and bone). Yep, life throws some f'ing curve-balls at times, but hey, we have to just get on with it and make the most of what we have NOW. He's taking some treatment (as a guinea pig - if you know what I mean) at the moment which has not long come over from the US, and only a select few in the UK have been selected. It has REAL good results, giving the 'guinea pigs' alot longer to live, and who knows - if he's still around in another 5 years (eg.) - what 'magical' discovery could be made in the future. You just gotta remain positive

He was absolutely chuffed to bits when I drove home with the 19's on the other week, so God knows how he'll be when I get the thing lowered too. As long as it makes HIM smile, it's gotta be worth it huh ?

Back on subject though - I DO actually LOVE both 3/5 door A3's. At first I preferred the 3 door, if I'm to be honest, but as you've all read - practicality had to be the priority. However, I don't think I'd swap my SB in now - damn those Audi's !! :)

cabriolet !!!!

only joking.... i've had a 3dr (ibis) and got a SB (phantom). both as good as each other my thinks :salute:

Creating the Sportback was criminal! 3 doors on a hatchback every time!! That's why the RS3's cack!

BRING ON MORE DOORS!!!!!!

The 3 door's rear hatch doesn't slope enough to give it a coupe look. It inclines more toward the econo-hatch look (although nowhere nearly as much as the 8J A3). The sportback looks like a mini (and sportier) avant, so its less sloped rear window still makes it look sportier (relative to avants with its more upright rear window).

Of course, the sportback has the much more updated look, higher beltline for a sportier look, etc.

By "higher beltline" do you mean the window/door heights? I think they're pretty much the same on body cars; it slopes up to the rear.

The Sportback I prefer due to what has already been said, it looks a bit more up to date and the design seems more balanced.

Before I would have said 3-door wins hands down, but after seeing some of the SBs on here... I'd say it's closer than I would have ever thought. 3-door still gets my vote though.

The sportback is probably longer, so the the tail is higher up.

interesting topic! its a tough choice for someone like me whos just in the market for an a3 diesel! nothing specific... :(

modding wise...which ones easier? easier to get hold of parts for 3dr?

This is the tough decision I came across but decided to go for the 3 door as I feel they like sportier, but after seeing n8's I'm eating humble pie! Defo 50/50!

there are some top SBs here, like Coling in particular has a peach! N8's SB is too ghetto for me

but look at these for example?
