AS.NET RING TRIP

Ok people dates have been confirmed. Friday 2nd September to Monday 5th September.

I have been involved in organising big trips to the Ring before and it has always been a pain in the **** to get money out of people so i'm afaid I'm not willing to do this again as I'd quite like an easy life ;)

Anyway, Prawn and myself have booked up in the Bergstube Hotel so if anyone else fancies tagging along you will need to book your own hotel room and crossing. I have no issues with meeting people en route and doing a convoy over to Germany.

Here are some rough prices for anyone interested:

- Euro Tunnel £96 per car
- Ferry £60 per car
- Full tank of fuel each way plus fuel for laps £200ish
- Hotel, B&B, £105 for 3 nights per person
- Laps are now 24 Euros per lap
- Food/drink, beer £100ish

You'll probably need around £350ish for the weekend if you want to be a passenger with someone and are willing to split fuel and crossing costs with the driver. And as a driver you'll probably need around £450-500 depending on how many laps you want to do and splitting fuel and crossing with at least 1 passenger.

Last year I drove with 3 passengers and it made the trip super cheap ;)

loads of great info at this site:

Ben Lovejoy's Nurburgring Nordschleife website

If anyone has any questions you can either post them up on here or PM me.

It would be greate to get a few ASN members on this trip. :racer:

Another point of discussion folks, is how do we cross the channel?
Westle usually takes the tunnel, but I usually take the ferry!

Tunnel takes about 30 mins from what I can gather, then it's an extra 45 mins on the drive from Calais up to Dunkirk where we would begin from the ferry. the tunnel is around £35 more expensive than the ferry, but it is very quick and easy.

The ferry takes 2 hours, and costs £30 less, but you save 45 mins driving in france, so the total journey with the ferry will be about 45 mins longer door to door. you get 2 hours to chill on the ferry.

Personally, I favour the ferry for trips like this, as you get 2 hours on the boat to meet and get to know the people we're with, but obviously many people don't like being on the boat for 2 hours!

What are your thoughts people? I'm happy to go with the masses

I'm happy either way too. I do hate bein parked close to inconsiderate ****** on the ferry who open their doors on your car. Last time I was on the ferry I had a lotus Elise and I had to climb out the window as they parked the next car so close to me I couldn't open the door fully!

Anyway I'm not fussed and it would be good to get to meet everyone and have a chat.

haha, you want to come on my lane on the ferry Neil! I've only ever been down below on the freight deck because all my cars are too low to get on the ramps. Down there the lanes are HUGE and our little cars get lost, with an easy 4ft between every car! You also get off sooner :)

I dont think my car is low enough! I might get an LCR splitter fitted before we go to make it look a bit lower ;)

Might be coming to this now, it's my Dad's B'day on the 5th of Sept, so I might make it seem like he is the one thats getting the good end of the deal!

This sounds very tempting, will speak to the GF about going as we'd both like to go but I'm currently looking at a career change so cant really commit until I know whats happening on the job front. Prawn, Westle if we were to come would one of you be willing to be a passenger in my car for a couple of laps as I'd like to drive the ring with someone who knows the track?

Yeah no worries mate. I'm hoping to grab a pasenger lap with Prawn too ;)

This is a very good idea

If I do go, I think I'll be going round the ring on Gran Turismo 5 from now until we leave!

It does help just knowing what bends are coming up next but you'll never get a feel for the crazy camber until you drive it. I'll be smashing a few hours in on GT5 too I think.

Yeah, I know it's not perfect as there is no chance of injury on GT5, and you don't get the same feel, but at least you know if it's a right/left etc.. If the PS3 is good enough for the MotoGP riders, it's good enough for me!

You should know it by now, you've been a few times :lmfao:

Honestly even after going for 10 years and doing a mixture of passenger laps and drivers laps it's still a challenge to remember every one of the 170 odd corners! You remember sections of the track which is why I tend to take it easy ;)

This isn't ment to sound like a brag in any possible way, more just a random point of interest.

I've driven around 30-35 laps now, and probably passengered in 15, so done maybe 50 laps of the circuit in total, and I can safely say I know every single corner! I felt after 15-20 laps I knew the bits that could be taken flat and which crests went which way, and now after 30 laps I can run through the whole thing in my head start to finish.

that's not to say that I know the perfect lines through each bend, far from it I would imagine from watching others, but in terms of knowing which way it goes after each bend, I'm totally confident I know it.

Just a case of getting out there as often as possible to improve the skills!

More than happy to sit in with people and give you a guide of which way it's going.

I'd love to offer everyone a passenger lap, but at 24 euros per ticket, and 16 euros per lap in fuel, it's pretty costly for me!

if anyone buys a lap card though, and wants a passenger lap, I'm more than happy to pay for the fuel and car wear if you've bought the lap :)

Do you take out any additional insurance for the ring or just hope you'll never hit the armco?

That's not bragging mate. I have quite a bad memory as it is so I find it hard to remember all the bends. I purchased GT5 yesterday so I'll be getting used to the track on that just so I know what bends are coming. The blind crests can be an **** if you dont know whats the other side.

I would have paid for a lap with you anyway mate, I dont take the ****.

I've never paid for track insurance in the past. The eccess is normally more than the car is worth, and it costs a good £200 a day too. This is another reason to respect the ring and to drive safely and come home in one piece.

Oh and Prawny, shall we just book the ferry and be done with it?

My mates are messing me about and so far I only have 1 definite. I know people will leave it till the last minute then moan at me that they have no hotel room or no car to go in!

Yeah im not looking to try and break any records, just the experience of driving the ring. I'll probably wait until the end of June before I book anything, need to weigh up cost as the S3 needs new brakes and I want to replace the dampers on my car as there a bit worn being 11 years old and 112000 miles under them so thats probably going to set me back over a 1k. I could probably get away with just doing the brakes if I wanted as I've had 3 new springs, drop links, lower wishbones and arbs in the past 3 years so some parts of the suspension arnt that worn.

If you had to choose between brakes and suspension before going to the ring It would have to be brakes 100%. 2 years ago I drove the ring on standard shocks and brakes and the brakes were shocking. The suspension held up just fine.

Last year I drove it with the brakes done but still standard suspension and it was still handling well but the brakes made a huge difference.

This year I'll have the brakes, the suspension, the power, and hopefully the tyres ;)

might be living back in sussex by then, which would save me £50 on fuel straight away. Do you reckon for 2 people, it could be done for around £500, before the laps are added?

At the end of the day you need to pay for Petrol and ferry crossing. A tank each way and £60 for the crossing. You dont have to stay in a hotel, you can find a campsite and pitch up a tent to save more money. You'll then need food and drink. Restaurant meals in Germany are a lot cheaper than they are here.

Not terribly fussed on the cost, just getting a general idea of how much I would need to save.

There is no need to mention camping, I'd rather sleep in the car!!

I'd be looking at being a driver though!! I'll just do as you say and go with the estimates above. Any idea of numbers, or is it just you + prawn so far?

So far the only ASN definites are Prawn and myself. Prawn has mates coming with him and I have a few mates coming with me. I'm sure there will be more interest closer to the time.

Fairly sure plunky and audi1.8t dan will be comming too :) plus bob who appears in all my progress threads with the black Leon :)

hell yes, the more the merrier indeed :)

Burgstube may well get booked up, but if it does, there's always camping at Camping AM nurburg, which you don't need to book, and there's also RingHaus over the road who should have spare rooms too.

Come on folks, this will be the trip of the year :)

I'd love to say we'll have a ko4 on the track car by then, but to be honest I don't think it'll happen.

Will just have to see how the old cracked ko3S stands up to you mighty S3 lot :p

This will be a wicked trip if we get a load of us and the weather holds out. It's a life changing experience, you'll want to go back every weekend once you've been once ;)

I dont think us S3 lot will be any quicker than you. Your car is putting out as much power as mine (at the moment), you know the track, and your car is a lot lighter. I might leave my rear seats at home ;)

On average how many laps do you get out of a tank of fuel? GF is up for the trip so starting to confirm costs. I'll be the slowest out there in my standard S3

Depends how you drive but you're looking at about 8 laps out of a full tank if you go mental.

Cool looking to only do 8 laps 4 each day 2 each, plus you can buy 4 laps for 89 euros so a little bit of a saving over single lap price

I'm told it's very pretty!

I'm always shocked on pax laps at just how beautiful the place is! You never see it when you're concentrating on driving

Got myself a copy of Gran Tourismo 5 yesterday but only just getting round to installing it. Gonna get a few licenses under my belt, browse the 2nd hand cars for an S3, tune it to the same spec mine will be in September, then hit the ring ;)

haha, legend!

We need to get some playstation / xbox lap times on the go! I'll try and buy something similar to mine tonight on forza and see what I can get!
