The TQS Owners thread

They are being kept a secret until I have paid for them!

ok m8 just a quick one though with 8j if your getting anything with a slight dish or a slight dip like mine i would go for 9j as the 8j bbs ch's where very flat and mine have a but of a dip in them

yeh 8j will be fine on flat rims start saving for suspension as of next week at last picking up bushes for wishbones on satday £600 for all suspension and spacers carnt wait to get it down and out

What suspension did you get in the end, as I'm assuming that's coilies as well?

Are you getting involved in the Haldex group buy?

not got the suspension yet m8 going for fk coilovers

dont see the point in the haldex part it only changes it from 70-30 to 50-50

I fancy it as the car does like a bit of understeer, so at least that'll get rid of some of it!

So what exactly did you get for your £600?

Plus, it's new and shiney!! :lmfao:

Seriously though, from what I've read, that it completely changes the car for the better, so it's got to be worthwhile. Especially now it looks like I'm keeping mine for another year or so.

That was part of my thinking in getting one, I can sell it on if I get an 8P or if I decide to get a late reg 8L S3, I can just re use it.

I had a look and insurance for me, with 2 years NCB is about £3000!!! So it's cheaper for me to do all the bits I want to mine.

But I want one now :sob::sob:

I paid nearly that on insurance for a 1.8sri corsa when I was 17, and I said never again. I suppose their is benefits to being an old git! :lmfao:

People like you make me really, really jealous :) Who are you insured with then?

Last year Admiral wanted £409 for a standard car, waiting for the renewal to drop through the door now, which will probably be higher. I have got a quote from Greenlight with all mods declared including a load of stuff that's not on my car yet like FMIC and they want £498 ;)

Ordering all the gear off eBay and a Universal FMIC. Going to keep the drivers SMIC so it's similar to this:

I'll remove the passenger SMIC and then run a 4" CAI up to my smoother airbox. I want to see if I can get as good a airflow through the standard airbox as the guys are with Jetex filters.

Would the job of keeping the SMIC on the drivers side be the same on the S3, as it would on the A3? I'm weighing up FMIC options now that I'm keeping her, and wondering if I could keep both. What are you doing about pipework then, getting it custom made?

Also mate, what did you use to smooth the airbox, I'm tempted to do that, or to try and do a similar job to tuffty, and fit my K&N into the standard airbox

Does the TQS have 2 smics in the same place as an S3?

The reason I want to leave the drivers one is to help out the fmic as it will be fairly small so I don't have to cut my crash bar or loose my fogs. S3dave is running a similar setup on his stage 2 S3 but has kept both smics.

I'm getting everything from eBay for just over £200. I've worked out what bends and joiners I need so it'll just be a case o making it all fit.

To smooth out the airbox I scored the ridges with a Stanley knife then snapped them out with pliers. Once they are all out you need to sand like a crazy mother. Be prepared to have no finger tips left! It took me a while but was worth it and gave me an increase of 3bhp and 7lbft when I did before and after tests with VCDS.

The TQS only has 1 smic, and I believe it's on the drivers side as well, which is why I was interested in what you do. I had seen S3daves, but he has kept two, so the project is slightly different. The reason I have thought about keeping the SMIC is the same as you really, I don't want to lose my fogs or change the crash bar at all, so a small FMIC and SMIC would be perfect.

I might just attack it with a dremel, as I quite like my fingertips the way they are.

I used a dremmel to start with but then I fine sanded it afterwards.

When I do my FMIC i'll get all the info up in my progress thread so you can see what I did and how well it works.

would the haldex not add extra preasure on the diff with it working more and more also doesnt the distribution change when booting the car thats when the quattro kicks in.

i do like the idea of 50/50 distribution although £600 for a blue box seems a fair bit.

i think i will get coilovers and tie arms then get arb's and see how that goes picking up front wishbone poly bushes on satday to replace the knackered standard ones along with dogbone mount quick change for that do any people change the small round bush in the mount or just the dog bone part?

Where did you get/where are you looking at getting the universal one from. I'm looking at a toyo sports intercooler, and then see if a mate of mine can do the pipework for a better price then them, otherwise I'll just buy the kit

I think it would add pressure to the diff, but they must be tested for a fair amount of time by haldex, otherwise they wouldn't sell them I'd have thought. The current system only kicks in when the fronts slip, whereas the new one is done on throttle movement I believe.

I believe it will put additional stress on the rear diff but it will cope with it. Bear in mind that the standard gearboxes are coping with over 300bhp without any issues. The way the power is distributed is different with the blue haldex. As standard the rear wheels will only kick in when front wheel slip is detected. With the blue haldex it puts 50/50 every time you move.

Cheers mate, I'd imagine I'd need slightly different piping for mine, and I'm not sure if I could use the FMIC either, as the S3 setup is different to ours.

I would have thought that the smic on the A3 and S3 would be the same part so the piping should also be 63mm. You will need different bends as you TB is on the other side to the S3 but I dont see any reason why that FMIC core wouldn't work for you too.

would this mean using more fuel like the evo's as they have a bit of a constant rear diff it does sound tempting 50/50 all round its just the price that puts me off how simple or pita are these to fit?

I dont think it effects fuel but that is a good question.

From the instructions I've seen it appears to be an easy job to fit.

I can't see it making a massive difference on fuel, and lets be honest, we're not driving a prius to start with! I just turn my DIS off, that way I don't know what my mpg is

Might be worth having a look at toyo sports as well mate, as they are cheaper then the ebay one you're looking at

I've looked at hundreds of cores mate. It's difficult to find ones with 63mm ins/outs. Let me know if you find one.

i know mine and most other peoples car's on ere are fuel monsters but if people are already driving carefully not me hehe and you get the haldex part it would serve lil purpose unless you give it a bit which would use more fuel and depending on how the haldex part works it will distribute more to the rear so more usage more fueling but inturn it is powering the rear so less drag.

my only worry is if you fit it what if any mpg is the car going to drop i know a fwd a3 1.8t gets better mpg than a quattro there is the weight issue but also the quattro has 4wd so get some push from the rear compared to the fwd a3.

i know its a boring question but if it gonna kill your mpg is it worth the money for a bit more better handling for that price plus the extra fuel you may need?

Yeh you have to ditch the fogs with that kit and it can be tricky to get the pipes to sit nice behind the bumper, also you have to make your own n75 take off point on the top pipe near the dv take off.

and you'll struggle to keep the standard intercooler on an a3 aswell chris because the bottom intake pipe on it is facing towards the rear of the car so would be a nightmare getting the pipework to the front mount. :sadlike:
