Hi guys, need some help.

I need to replace my battery (2003 S3 8L) and have bought a Bosch Silver replacement from Halfords via a trade card. The model number of the replacement battery is HSB096, which is the one that is stated for an A3/S3. However it's wider than my current battery by about 3cm, which means it doesn't fit into the plastic battery "cradle". Am I being thick or is this the wrong battery for the car?

Pic of current battery is below. I assume this is a normal S3 battery tray?

Anyone replaced their battery with a Bosch Silver? What model number did you use?

When I replaced my battery on the A3 I noticed this exact same thing regarding the battery size when in the shop. I was goin gto get the bigger battery until I relaised it wouldn't fit and I would need to get a bigger tray and lose the battery cover.

I think there is a bigger battery tray available to buy but the one you have will just be the same size as the one that is fitted to the A3 I assume. Don;t quote me on it though as I haven't looked at the S3 battery properly.

Hmm; ****. Anyone fitted a Bosch Silver in their S3 and know the battery number? The one I have is an HSB096.

We have a Bosch silver battery on our car however I have just been out to have a look and can't see the part no with the battery fitted as the bar across the top hides it. I got it from Costco, not sure if it was the one listed, I just took the measurements and got one the same size with the terminals in the correct position.

Had the exact same problem at halfords! I managed to get another to fit and I'll try and get the number in the morning pal, only problem is now I need to trim a small amount of plastic off the clip on battery cover on (I'll get a pic)

first one my local garage got me was wrong but they eventually got the right one , I will try and see the number tomorrow if I can get to the car

there is a battery that fits without any modification

Mine has a Bosch 027 Silver with 62Ah which fits with no mods. It's what GSF recommended.

Looks like the one you have is the heavy duty battery which might explain its slightly larger size.

It fits perfectly and I believe Varta is the same brand Audi use.

Yeah vag use varta, normally the fit the Blue Range, but I actually upgraded to the silver dynamic, audi can get them, I actually got it cheaper at audi than anyother retailer, nearly fell over when realised that lmfao.

Have you tried the Varta Battery Search mate, should bring up ones that fit your car & shows sizes/fixing types.

OK thanks guys. I think I'm just going to take the old one in with me and change it for one of the same size. Strange because I searched online for the correct Bosch Silver battery to fit the S3 8L and this is what came up.

jcs365 - the 027 62Ah Silver looks like the right dimensions to me. Guess I'll be changing it to that one.

In the end I bought a Bosch Silver 027 S5005 which fits perfectly and is the same dimensions as the original. Thanks jcs356.

The HSB096 was the recommended Bosch Silver battery on various online sites, not only Halfords. Having looked at my friend's pre-facelift A3TQS, I think it would fit because he doesn't have the plastic case around the battery whereas on my 2003 8L it wouldn't fit.

Sorry to resurrect an ancient thread but it keeps coming up in google so I'm hopefully adding some useful information.

I have a 2000 S3 (8L) and was just about to pull the trigger on the higher powered E44 Varta Silver (77Ah 577400078) when I went down to measure my battery and battery compartment. The length of the E44 is 278mm and the battery compartment on my S3 appears to only be about 270mm long so I reckon it won't fit.

I went for the lowered powered Type 027 or D15 at length 242mm as I'm sure this will fit and appears to more closely mirror the size of the battery that I have in there currently...

Will let you know how I get on.

Just to update this thread as I am in the process of replacing the battery in my 2002 S3 as it appears to be a little tired.

I have measured my current battery to confirm the dimensions of 240mm wide 175mm deep and 175mm high which is a 075 type which I think is wrong for these cars.

The Bosch S5005 027 type mentioned above is the same width and depth but its 190mm high and I believe this is the correct dimensions for these cars as my current battery (which I believe is the wrong type) has about 15mm of gap between it and the fuse tray.

Both the info on the official Bosch website and also Euro Car Parts is wrong as they state we need a 096 which is far too wide as its 275mm wide

So on this basis I have purchased this Bosch S5 battery (Bosch number S5005) from Ebay as its quite a good deal at £68.99 delivered with a 5 year warranty and I know will fit perfectly its mentioned above

I forgot to reply - My Type 027 Varta Silver Dynamic Car Batter X 1 @ £ 48.51 Each
---------------------------------------------------------------
Subtotal: £48.50
P&P: £7.98
Discount: £1.69
TOTAL: £54.79

...seems to be working fine after some fun with a blown alternator... :|

The larger 096 is used in some of the A3 and Golf diesels, might be why it comes up on the Euro Car Parts site for the A3

Euro car parts seem to be using the Bosch guide as their info as if you go here Bosch Automotive Parts - Batteries - Cars and open up the product info page link at the bottom you can see that Bosch state a S5005 (027 type) works in an A3 8L1 Quattro but if you scroll down to the S3 info part its states a S5008 which is the 096 type and far too wide.

The Varta D15 battery linked above is also the correct dimensions as its the same as the Bosch S5005

Got my Bosch S5005 today (one I linked to above on Ebay)

Fits like a glove :)
