My A3 is now gone and we now have an R32.

Lovely .:R Robin, the milteks do sound impressive on them

Any other plans? Bora vents? Did it come with the VW cd changer? I think i may have one lying around if you're interested?

Some mk5 interiors are nicer than the mk4's - actually only the buckets tbh. What were VW thinking when they designed the cloth or leather seats on the mk5 GTi's :( The layout of the cabin is horrible too..

mk1, 2 and 4's ftw :yum:

It already has the bora vents and has a CD changer which we will remove to make way for an ipod cable.

Its staying as it is really as its already got a Giac remap and a milltek so no more things need doing to it. Its an everyday car so it will need to stay practical.

The Golf always looks best in a 3 door imo, but that looks absolutely mint Robin(especially those door shuts). If I could turn the clock back 6 months I think I'd go for an SB/5 door. I miss the extra doors my Leon had tbh.

Good luck with it!

Thanks

I spent a few hours yesterday cleaning the door shuts as it bugs me when people don't clean them!

got to admit i don't miss the A3 as much as i thought i would as the R32 is really nice and i know the A3 is being looked after well.

Nice! My brother bought a 5 door in silver 2 months ago. He is fanatical over it. Much better in the 5 door than the 3 in my opinion! He stayed away from the blue but I prefer it.

Amazing sound!

that's a beast nice colour too. a kid near me has one with the intakes in lower grills etc his one makes a ****** racket but goes like stink! Maybe he's got a supercharger or turbo?? Anyway, as you said yourself kinda step backwards, but it's also a pretty special motor so that should make up for it somewhat ay...

Enjoy lad!

R32 looks mint mate and they are better looking than the Mk5 that replaced it.... I orefer the R32 to your A3 but we all have different opinions. Also the R32 is a modern classic and quite rare in 5 door in DBP! Enjoy it....

Looks mint Robin! The Mk4 is a classic and as such I don't see it as a step backwards.
I had a black 5 door for 2 months before I got the A3, but it had to go back to the dealer as the timing chain needed doing and they wouldn't pay for it. Would still have one now.
Best of luck

I agree Ju, i would have one over a 8P if there wasnt the timing chain issue.

Yeah, that's why I got the A3 3.2 Paddy, it was thought the problem was solved in the later 3.2 engines lol!

Yeah the timing chains is an issue, we got our old R32 chains done for free via Vw uk but can't do the same on this one so I will be changing the chains myself on the driveway one weekend. Big job as the gearbox and subframe have to be removed. Doing it for a peace of mind really.

Yeah, I remember that from the timing chain thread on R32OC, posted on that myself when I found I had issues.
Best of luck with the chain swap!

Braver man than me Robin :) i got Audi to do mine !

Can't be that hard, i got 2 guys from work lending a hand, ones an engine builder who knows W12 engines (2 x V6 engine) inside out and the other guy is like me a base engine development engineer.

I would of just swap the engine.......it's a step down if you ask me......:3sadwalk:

Not a lot of point in doing it without sprockets and tensioners . I am told that one of the problems is over pressure on the hydraulic tensioner causing excess pressure on the chain and accelerated wear on the tensioner.
Fully synthetic oil is a must as well.
I am looking for a link for you re chain replacement....

My mrs has a mkiv 2.8 4motion 5 door and it's way better on fuel than the r32 she had before.. Gotta be honest tho, thinking seriously about forced induction for it, which might have some effect on economy! Never been a fan of how understeery (is that a real word!?) the r32 was due to that massive dead horse of an engine nailed to the grill, think the 2.8 might be slightly better from that point of view (tho that might be all in my head!). I know the 2.8 is a lil lighter..
Either way it's a cool shopping cart for her, and helps keep the sticky fingers out of my A3 BE!!

Its in your head :- The V6 is one of the lightest and most compact 6's ever made. Remember the 5 pot RS lump is heavier and thats in the TTRS and the RS3
I think you will find that the V6 being quattro with the battery in the boot etc is actually much better balanced than the FWD 2.0 tfsi and 2.0d

Your probably right dude, at the time I had a TT and it had many many mods, in terms of handling : H&R ARB's, Eibach coilys, powerflex bushes, engine mounts, and performance HALDEX.. whereas our r32 had none of these, so I guess it wasn't really a fair call!
I retract my poor judgement!:ermm: Also gotta say, that 8L s3 3.2 turbo with like 800ps on youtube is mental, and the v6 sounds loads better....

So paddy, do you reckon the 2.0TFSI is better balanced than the 3.2 out of curiousity?

Well there is not a huge amount in it in stock form. I looked into it a while back when the guys at VAGOC who mostly run TTRS's were taking the Pee out of my old front end heavy 3.2. :)
I did find that the RS 5 pot was heavier which shut them up :)
The 2.0tfsi quattro is slightly better than the 3.2 but the 2.0tfsi FWD is worse. The Quattro adds weight to the back which helps the balance. The 2.0tfsi 4 pot is a lighter engine without a doubt but you have to add turbo and intercooler rad as well as battery etc to it up front to be fair which the 3.2 dosnt have.
My feeling is its what you are used to really, neither cars are particularly good at handling but i think it would take a track day to separate them but even then the 3.2 is going to shove out 30-40bhp more so who knows. As you say they are both just shopping trolleys and neither are built for out and out performance anyway. :lmfao:

So the shopping list for the R32 so far is a turbo kit, coilovers and front/rear ARB`s..........:yum:

Yea....A turbo kit on a 8 year old engine will be fine :sos:

you gotta point there mate.... maybe i won't turbo hers lol it's nearly 10yrs old! (and her driving is shocking anyway):tapedshut:

I can't disagree with anything you've said there mate.. i've a feeling that the v6's would win out on track tho as they have a far better midrange, it ain't always about peak horses.. the torque even her 2.8 produces means it's quicker on 0-62 and couple mph faster top end than my 2.0tfsi quattro! a fact I will never tell her lol

The engines eight years old so what? It`s the mileage and engine condition that matters. The engine in my R32 had a turbo put on it last year when the engine had done 50,000 miles. The 3.2 engine is built much stronger then a 2.0 turbo engine.

Yea thats why mine knackerd its cam chain and tensioners and sprockets at 45k miles......

Seriously though if i was going to bang out 500 bhp like you i would want a serious look at the mains /thrust/small ends first.:)

Old post but thought this thread might be of interest to some 3.2 owners (pictures of myself and 2 mates changing the chains on the R32 on the driveway!)

Good read, can you confirm what year the part number changed?

Was there any visible differences between chains? Like a makers stamp on the links.

Makes me want an exhaust, filter, and remap so much. Just to be able to wind down my window and hear that sound.

Not sure when they were changed but we know that Mk5 R32's don't suffer from the chain failures.

Visually there are no differences however the old one was all brown and stained so you couldn't see any of the markings.
