Guide - How to fit a catch can and simplify the PCV system

how long have they said for delivery, guessing a week or so from where it is

Yeh it'll be less you you guys in the UK. Everything takes a while to get here it seems. Great weather, women and BBQs but not much else :)

Sorry if i sound stupid, but what benifits do you get by doing this breather system please?..i dont have S3 just a A3

This was taken from uk-mkvs.net:

No oily vapour should re-enter the intake. It'll be caught in the catch can. This should:

- Keep boost pipes free from recirculated oil vapour
- Octane of the fuel shouldn't be reduced (oil vapour reduces octane apparently)
- No need to clean throttle body again
- No boost leaks from the stock VW pipework under the manifold. Remember, anything in the inlet is either boost or vacuum. If a vac pipe connected to the manifold has a split, it'll leak both under vacuum and boost conditions and the ECU will need to compensate. If enough compensation has to occur that the ECU thinks it's out of tolerance, you'll see a CEL on the dash

Just been out to empty my can and i've noticed since venting to atmosphere that the amount of condesation in the can has almost vanished.

I've been checking the can twice a week and it's a lot better than it was when venting to TIP.

I've now started to notice the ocaisional wiff from the catch can filter. If I empty the can every couple of days there is not problem but if left for a week or so, the smell from the contents of the catch can is more noticable.

I'll probably re-route the filter lower into the bay and see if it's any better.

On a side note has anyone else noticed their plastic 90 degree 19mm bends starting to split in the middle? I binned one of mine when I vented to atmos but the other one was looking a bit fragile.

I looked into alloy replacements but they are quite pricey!

Shocking price :faint:

90 degree bends turned up today Dave, thanks again, unbelievable service. One minute we were talking about it and the next minute they've dropped through my door :applaus:

Anyway just popped out to the car and took a few pics:

Bit of oil where I removed the breather:

Cobbled together this:

Not to sure where to vent the thing now! If I go straight down it'll get in the way of stuff, and the smell will probably just rise :uhm:

Anyone got any ideas?

ok, so my shopping list is...

Catch can
3 meters 19mm oil grade silicon hose (just in case I make a mistake somewhere)
1 x metal t piece (S3dave)
2 x metal 90 degree bends (S3dave)

What I dont get is you also have 13mm hose for your brake servo, and that 1 way valve. So do I need:

an additional 2 meters of 13mm oil grade silicon hose
one way valve (13mm inlet/outlet)

???

How many points am I capping off and are they all 19mm (going to order proper caps, possibly S3dave if he can do them as well).

Just want to get everything before I attempt this. Also, if you have a link of where to buy that valve, it would be useful.

Thanks

I got a 1 way valve from ebay, search for "boat non return valve" I think.

As for blocking things up, you will need a bung for the middle nipple under the inlet mani (cant remember size) maybe 8mm. and you will need a bung for the brake servo if you re-use the 1 way valve. If you buy a new valve you will only need the mani bung.

I bought a one way valve from the local part factors and used the original hose...

I didn't think the clear hose would last long either lol.

I'll be re-routing the breater this weekend once my airbos is out the way. Fitting a Jetex cone at Bill's tomorrow then I'll route the breather into the wing through the old air duct hole.

I start to feel sick from the oil fumes in traffic :(

theres nothing wrong with that servo hose so will probably just go with the valve and caps for the moment. Got too much to do at the moment so save that for a later date.

Do i need a little bit of 8mm pipe as well then for the cap to go in or can I reuse whats already there for that?

Cheers

will make a head shield for the air filter and fit the catch can to that as got no room at mo to fit the can in lol.

the clear hose looked pretty for a week so so till the oil started passing through and making it look brown lol

I reused what was there and stuck a bolt in it and jubileed it up. Pikey mod FTW ;)

I managed to squeeze on some 5mm silicon and a bolt in the other end...

If its like mine (also marine), it'll be almost impossible to bend. I've just bought proper goodridge AN12 push fit hosing (in black) to match my fittings.

yeh that looks fine for the catch can i recomend ap ive bought a few things from them the plastic joiners are also good quality or get the metal ones from s3 dave.
