I remember a plastokote clear matt lacquer from my halfords days many moons ago (didn't ever use it though)
You can definitely get matt lacquer, I couldn't find any when I wanted it for my mirrors typically. Next time I'll just ask Noel lol

Is there a particular rubbing compound you would recommend ? I have a Phantom black A4 Cab with some annoying but not deep scratches down the near side (no fingernal snagging when I run across them) caused by bushes and bits of brambles in the narrow country lanes.....
best way to see if you can buff any scratches out is to run a small amount of warter down them if they go when you do this it will buff out ;-) i use G3 regular grade paste compound its what the big guys use lol you can get it from any good car paint shop

I've only done bits by hand and it's been very good so far. But I've seen the results on detailingworld when people have used a polisher and it's amazing. of course the G3 is apparently very good, as you said. I'm not sure if the poorboy's sp2 is well liked by the amateurs because it breaks down as you use it or something?
seems good had a look on youtube but you do need a polisher to get it to work me thinks im told the clay bars do the job but never used them ether lol g3 is really good stuf you can get it in all kinds of grain from ruf to the one i use or evan a smoth one im thinking is for the swirl marks its used in nearly every body shop

clay bar is good to get the crap off the surface of the paint,like hard dust build up. the kind of stuff you don't notice until you've clay bar'd it and run your finger across the glassy surface and go "wow". I'm guessing you use g3 or sp2 to really give the paintwork a going over but you wouldn't want to do it too often. I was advised to use the sp2, then put a layer of carlack polish on and then collinite 476 wax on top. I have the products but haven't done the whole lot until i get my hands on a polisher and also get the bubbling on the front arches sorted out.

I used it before on my s2 and loved the effect. funnily enough having kids has seriously affected the amount of time I have for making my car shiny though

i no mate i had some paint made up for mine there is 3 difront shades to it so if you ever need paint make sure they match it right lol

that's why my front and rear lower valances are a fraction off, because I had them sprayed in the UK before sending out here. ******. Best solution will probably be to get the bubbling sorted on the arches and then vinyl wrap it
yeah when i was getting it made for my rear spolier was a bit touch and go for a bit as they are all so very close lol iv thought about this vinyl wrap not sure what coulors it comes in though do you have a web page or some where you would get it from

it doesn't seem to be advertised too openly for general public purchase since it's usually bought trade by the people who apply it. Chris (cfoster with the matt black s4) recommended Hexis, as it has tiny perforations that will let you roll air bubbles out. that said i'm not yet convinced I could do it without making a total **** of it. I think a rough guide would be £300 for bog standard colours or £500 for matt black or something a bit more special.
was not thinking of doing the hole car but the lower part is that why you have not done yours mate talking from experience are we lmao

man I hate it when I've left a window open for ages, then type a bit reply, hit send and the browser tells me my session has timed out. so back to typing it again. aghh!
A couple of years ago one of the RS6 reps developed a crack in the rear rim edge and was leaking air so I bought 2 spares. Recently I discovered that 2 of the wheels on the car now also have small cracks so 3 out of a total of 6 have cracks so I've sold them to a mate who knows someone who does aluminium welding. I'm trying not to cry because I loved their 8.5 inches of raw stance. oof! So I'm on 16" pepperpots temporarily while I sort the Ronals out. I also have a pair of 10mm spacers for the front and 15mm spacers (on the way) for the rear to get back a similar stance.
So I'm trying a bit of DIY refurbing again, this time on a set of abused S4 ronals. I'm doing it in summer this time and took the tyres off. I've rubbed the wheels down, filled the bits that needed it, sanded, rubbed, filled, sanded.. then added 3 coats of primer and have gone over every mm with 600 grit paper to smooth it all out. I'm about to start painting but am wondering whether I should use 1200 grit paper after I have painted them, before I do the lacquer?

aha! the voice of experience! And did you rub down the paint before applying lacquer?
James - To be fair that's the worst wheel of the 4. Fingers crossed they look OK when I've finished. They won't be perfect (I'm being realistic) but they definitely can't look worse that when I started

I didn't, the finish of the paint seemed flat enough so I just threw a few coats of lacquer on top (ProXL brand).
I suppose flatting the paint slightly with 1600grit would increase the depth/shine.
