S3 PE1820 big turbo build

I got one off the bay too, good quality, had a logo that read 'topran' on it.

What sort of figures does the turbo produce on similarly displaced engines?

That's exactly the same sump I just ordered, a Topran one. Seemed OK, so meh. lol.

I suspect it should make up to 380 ish with a bit of luck, fingers crossed.

Bargain!

Thats pretty awesome that you got to drive it home! good starting point power wise shame mines not ready for a quick comparison :ninja:

Bill did some comparisons on the dyno PC, and the PE's output wasn't looking that hot to be fair when compared to the hybrid's.

It doesn't drive like that though, I was really impressed.

Hopefully Bill can pop the dyno prints up when he has 2.

Lovely stuff Welly I'm looking forward to seeing yours and Dane's builds when they're complete.

Yeah, will be good to see another hybrid car I must admit. :)

Hoping I'm not going to regret the change, however based on what it feels like now, I don't think I will.

Can't wait to see the finished product I must admit.

I really wana go hybrid now for the constant power youve mentioned. All these turbo build threads are frankly pissin me off, lol, they influence me too much!

Yeah, the hybrid was a very good all rounder, let there be no doubt. However I did suffer some fairly constant issues running it as highly strung as I was, and that was what eventually made me head down the larger turbo route. I've been through so many manifolds, and get so much ear ache... lol

Thanks to you pushing it other people can avoid some problems. It was that ****** 034 mani that ruined it for you. Roughly how much more will an ihi conversion be compared to hybrid?

Hard to say mate if I'm honest - most of the work was done already so it's hard to get a feeling for it. When it's all finished I will try and work it out me thinks.

a difference which would effect spool/load on sunday was I ran it in 4th, where all comparisons were in 5th previously. this shifts the torque/spool to the left on the plots with less load applied. I am at the max roller speed in 5th with your 7800rpm limiter, so I ran it in 4th.. but next time I will compare to 5th again, and see how the next ramp rate and 4th compares load wise. Balance of sufficient load but not too much load for the engine to work against, without getting all hot and bothered.

OK dude, sounds good to me.

OK - sump sorted for now, well until the new one arrives. I'm not sure I will be seeing it this week, so I couldn't wait that long.

Managed to resolve the leaking, long story, which I can't be ***** to describe in honesty.... lol.

Anyway, fuel pump wiring finished - bumper refitted - leaks sorted.

Ready for mapping :)

The K04 hybrid map is performing outstandingly well considering it is running the PE1820 on it. As said before, fueling is very rich currently, however she is still managing to make 268 g/s flow at 22.3 PSI, so not bad.

Planned boost is going to be 25-26 PSI, fueling hopefully around the 12.5 mark.

We shall see what she does....

He leaves me for dead... Easily... You can tell it spools up later though.

Yeah, agree completely, the lag is much more apparent. However that wasn't completely unexpected, and hopefully clipping some fuel out will help the spool a little.

I'm back on MBC control only now at 22 PSI for the time being, that seems to have helped the lag a little.

OK, so the mapping is finished.

Final figures are 370 BHP 331 ft/lbs.

I haven't got the dyno prints handy, however I will try and grab them over the weekend to post. Have some interesting comparison plots of the PE1820 Vs the CR Hybrid K04.

Have been discussing the use of a high flow inlet manifold to aid top end power. Can't help but feel that the small port inlet mani is becoming a bit of a bottleneck now. Been looking into that, so we shall see if/when I can acquire one.

Driving on the road wise, the thing goes like a scalded cat. Really impressed with the power, and the delivery I really like. It was a bit strange at first, however the car is much more drivable now as the CR Hybrid as it was was a little over eager.

So, that's it on this one for now - I will update with more as it becomes available.... :)

(and the dyno prints)

Well done welly and co....we need vids for a feel of the power....
370 is certainly going to catch a few big boys out.....

Yeah, I'm sure I can facilitate that.... I need to get it MOT'd next week first, and then she'll be back out on the road again. Shibby.

That is AWESOME!

So performance wise is the extra 40 ish HP all that more savage?
I found a good inlet mani on piston heads, I pm'd tuffty about it as he was first one I thought wanted one, wonder if its still available. It looked like a good rmr copy.

Already emailed the dude asking how much he wants for it... That link was posted earlier on in the thread somewhere I think.

Its about funds at the moment really, or the lack of.... lol

Not so much the power, more the delivery. It's brutal. Far more brutal than the hybrid, however the power is there for less of the time... A bit of a trade off.

Isnt that manifold slated on usa foruma for been *****! Sure ive see. It somewhere sayin the say company that produce arnt exactly a reputable company put it that way, maybe wrong though.
