Hi all if you have read my other thread you will no i have some funny noises which i think is the timing chain. ive ordered one of those and a new chain. but why i have the head in bits im wanting to no if the lifters can be stripped and cleaned. ive got them socking in petrol at the moment to try and clean them but would be best to strip them if possible. its costing alot of money at the minute so i want to eliminate all possibilities. thanks for reading

a slow compress in a vice will allow them the drain, then you can try the "Bashing" trick.

I mean slow though, takes ages per tappet.

just been out to garage and had a play and they wont budge. will try and drain them first and see what happpens. also normaly on other cars i usualy tap the centre to see if they move freely. non of these move at all, there is no bounce. they carn't be all f**ked

I would assume they are still of oil. A slow squeeze in a vice will drain them, then i bet they will be bouncy then

Last few items i've imported from the states have taken about 3-4 days to reach UK customs, and then about 2 weeks to get from there to my door.

I also tried the "smash the lifters on a flat surface" trick, and also failed. Dunno if its something thats changed in the lifter design from the old golf lifters in the link, or if i just wasnt trying hard enough though.

The lifters out of the TT engine i've just put together were also "hard", i expect thats just normal when they're full of oil.

Ok right ive got all the oil out and they will only move the slightest bit. still wont bounce though lol. ive never messed with 1.8ts before so i don't no if they are supposed to be like this or not. as every single one is the same i would say they are but would like confirmation on this.

Many thanks for replys

hello guys ive tried searching on the forum for any thread concerning oil lifter noise especially when u trunt he car on first thing in the morning to warm up and its a loud thumping or ticking noise straight on the top of the engine on the right side that is next to the drive belt etc..

is it old age , normal or should be looked at as she's going to get a clutch and flywheel upgrade next week.

cheers in advance for any pointers :)

Hi matey , i think you're right though its only over long priods that the car is off. i have a video recording not that u can see anything but a audi and it almost sounds like a ****** air compressor. ive noticed this after an idiot of a mechanic fixed rocker cover gasket on my car only to break my dip stick and tube. and fit my tyers the wrong way. Mechanics in australia seem to be complete idiots when it comes to VAGs.

thats the link

lol. Yeh definetly a lifter, take you'r rocker cover off first thing in the morning and push all the lifters down with a handle of a screw driver. they all should be pretty hard, The one that moves easily will be the f**ked one. failing that get some fealer gauges and check for clearences

ah thanks matey this car has cause me so much troubles ive change 2500$ AUD worth of equipment on the car from timing belts clutch flywheel battery injectors, coil pack , and the HT leads gasket and rear main seal im fed up lol. any way besides my *****ing do u know time wise how much time it will take as its going for a check up on Thursday this coming week for clutch replacement

ah and i forgot if it continues which im not looking at that happening what can get damaged ? engine wise sorry im a bit of a noob

you might get increased wear on your cam lobes or worse as the lifter won’t hold pressure there is obviously something wrong with the bearing in the middle so what could happen is it could over pressurise and cause piston slap which would result in the head off new valves fitted at least

To check the lifters about 30min - to replace depends on which side. inlet side is easy and wont take long at all - exhaust side is a bit different as you need to take the cam belt off. it took me roughly 2 hours to replace the cams - lifters and fit new timing belt

thanks matey appreciate it.. not even having fun with this car hasn't even run 2000miles since i owned it and all these problems have risen

yup its ridiculous i dont know how much it will cost me as i dont have the tools yet to fix the car though i have the HANS manual lol. been think on this A3 wether if i were to change the engine on it put a 1.8T would the gearbox be the same ( change ratios that is ) and would the starter motor, alternator wiring loom ecu etc... or do i have to change them accordinly. cheers
