2.0TDI fuel economy

I have a 2010 A4 2.0TDI 143 S line SE.

I have got as low as 414 and the most i have seen is 511, this is from a full tank to the fuel warning light comes on, what figures should i get for a full tank? I don't drive the car hard, i would hate to see the figures then.

well done for getting 511 is all i can say! 420 is what i get, doesnt matter how i drive it.The DIS lies too.Sorry mate but it aint gonna get any better!.Have it remapped to 170-80.youll get the same mpg but itll be more fun!

I'm glad i bought a 2.0T quattro petrol!!!! With mixed driving, 380-410 is easy. Granted, hard driving drops it to below 350, but i did manage a gentle cruise up North of Scotland 2 years ago and averaged into the mid 40's and range was over 450, IIRC.

I dunno, when I filled up and had 580 on my previous post above, the fuel beep went off at 550 showing I had 50 left. Mind you I did this recently in a rather remote area, went to a saisnburys but it was shut. Got another 5 miles with it showing this.

I've got the 143CR in my Exeo (saloon), and can regularly get >600miles out of a tank on a good motorway run. The most I've had is 695miles on a run from Derby down to Paris.

On the daily commute I get on average 44-46mpg, but can get 54mpg on a long run, sitting at about 80mph on manual (cruise knocks 1-2mpg off that).

Interesting how you say cruise knocks MPG down. Maybe because it applies the brakes instead of freewheeling down hills.

Generally getting circa 600 to the tank. Avearge over 78,000 miles is 44.5mpg (actual not DIS).

That is excellent!? I was averaging 36mpg yesterday on the way down the M5, 31mpg on the way back. 1000 miles on the clock, 2.0 TFSI. And I was going some?

It drops significantly around town though, roughly 20mpg. My DIS reads 420miles when the tank is filed, probably getting around 360 miles, although still early days.

I love the engine, but will miss the mpg of the diesels and not having to fill up every other day!

Mt DIS reads just over 40 mpg. Get about 500 miles to the tank. Pretty disappointed really with that. Was hoping for an extra 50-100 miles, but I'll live with it. Suppose the multitronic doesn't really help though. 143 CR

I find overtaking on A roads and speed makes a massive difference.

I get about 42mpg on my 30 mile cross country commute, but if I decide not to overtake people that are travelling at 55 or less and choose instead to stay behind them..... my journey takes a few minutes longer but I get over 50 mpg.

One route takes me through a 15 mile section of motorway construction with average speed cameras for the whole length. I get about 50 mpg average if I go that way, even if its clear and I can use cruise at 55 mph (its a 50mph limit but 55 on the cruise does not get you a ticket).

Comparing my two A4s, going purely by what the DIS says.....

My old 2006 B7 2.0TDI PD 140PS I used to get a long term average of about 48-ish MPG, which is what I would get on the daily commute. A bad commute ( getting held up, lots of overtaking or if I was in a bad mood....!) could see it drop to low 40s but never below, whereas a steady drive at 50MPH, nursing the throttle you could get it up to high 50s.

The B8 2.0TDI 143CR I now have is currently averaging 42-43MPG on the same journey, if you get your foot down you will be in the high 30s, and you really have to nurse it to get it close to 50MPG.....although what I've noticed is that if you flick over to the instantaneous fuel consumption readout, it isn't as keen to jump up to the high numbers as the old car was if you lift off the gas or are on the overrun, so maybe its just the programming of the trip computer that's different??

Ultimately I say what others have said before - don't take what the DIS is saying as face value. Brim the tank and see how far it goes until empty is the only reliable way of finding out.

Wow! I have had 475 plus maybe 25-30 left in the tank before and that was really trying! And we have the same car. I have wondered if I am getting less than I should and this confirms it!

Last time I filled up 72£ worth of diesel to full tank, dis showed 650 to empty.

Time will tell. Generally if I drive like my dad, controlled, steady looking to save fuel. (Albeit boring) I can achieve 55mpg

Thanks The reason I was asking about the Quattro is because they have smaller tanks, and weigh more so you do tend to get a lot less miles to the tank vs a non-quattro.

90% of my car use is long distance to work my shortest trip is 180 miles round trip and 98% of it is dual carriage way / motorway driving ... since I have had this car I have never had less than 450 miles to a tank and of course the Quattro tank is smaller than the none Quattro tank so you get less miles to a tank anyway

If you don't mind me asking, what speed do you usually do on the dual carriageway/motorway? And do you use cruise control?

I am always on cruse control ( its a licence saver ... ) and 60 on dual carriageways and 70 to 75 on motorways

Thanks, I might try a stint at 60 although I'm not sure I could be patient enough for that. I usually set the cruise to 70-75 regardless of whether it is dual carriageway/motorway. It may explain part of the discrepancy though. I did once get over 500 miles to a tank in my old 3.2 when driving in Ireland (sat at 50 most of the way due to the poor roads)

I always have aircon on. That will make a difference I guess. My tyres are at 40PSI

None! Even with the petrol, the lowest I went down to was 10 miles left. I am loathed to go near that in the diesel as it is an expensive job if to fix if you completely run out. I remember Clarkson managed a good few miles beyond 0 in the famous London->Edinburgh->London trip in the A8 4.2TDI so there must be quite a bit of headroom in there for those that dare to push it

Also, I have heard it can be bad for the engine running that low as you get more 'bad' fuel into the system (I'm not convince about this latter point however).

I am really surprised about some of the mpg results that people are getting. My 3.0 TDI quattro isn't far off what some of the 2.0 143 cars are doing and it's making over 300 bhp. I always brim the tank and record mileage and fuel added in an excel spread sheet.
Have done for years with mine and the wifes car I can see if there are any issues occuring .
Over the last 14 months my car has averaged 32mpg, the DIS says 34mpg so seems pretty much to always be about 2mpg high.
This includes all the time I have been on dynos, Santa Pod, GTI Festival , GTI International, Towing 1300Kg of caravan with a fully loaded car etc.
The best I have ever had out of a tank was 36mpg , the worst 27.3mpg that was sitting in loads of traffic on the M5 for hours and towing our caravan with a fully loaded car.
90% of my driving is the 10 mile trip to work and back or pottering around locally. I don't often do longer trips but went to the Harry Potter studio trip on Saturday, As I had my sister following I set the cruise to 75mph most of the way so she could keep up.
It averaged 49mpg going there and 47mpg coming back according to the trip.
Thats a 112 mile trip down the M6, and M1. There is a good stretch of 50mph roadworks on the M1 that probably helped . I suspect when I fill the tank next it should beat the previous best for a tankful.
I am really happy with the fuel economy considering the performance of the car and the weight with quattro etc.

I've got the 143PS 2.0TDI and I am struggling to make over 43-44mpg (disappointing). A lot of this may be due to my partner's lead right foot, although I can make a few observations...

- winter fuel economy is always worse due to having the lights on a lot, using seat heating (if you have it), and warming up. Probably worse for me up here in chilly Scotland.
- the fuel gauge on the B8 is a lot more linear than that of the B6/B7. On the B6/B7 you could do at least 50-70 miles before the gauge even started to move off the Full mark, but the downside is that it would drop like a stone once you were down to a quarter tank.
- the trip computer on the B8 seems to underestimate the actual fuel economy, if you do an actual calculation of the MPGs based on how much fuel is used versus mileage, it tends to be 3mpg better than whatever the DIS is reporting.

My tyres always wear at the sides first hence the reason I have upped the pressure. I don't put the foot down much but I do tend to not slow down for roundabouts
