Automatic gear knob remove

How do you remove the gear knob from an automatic?
I need to remove mine.

put shift into 3rd, slide the sleeve under the handle that covers the stick itself down, then pull the selector button out, and lift up the handle of the stick.

if that makes sense lol

I tried that and it did not work.

How far down should the sleeve go and how hard should it be to move?

i know it worked on mine as i did it to remove the trim at the bottom to cover in carbon wrap as it was worn, ive got the audi mechanic manual and it show how to remove there, i can email it to you if you pm me your address

the sleeve just goes down as far as you can push it. but the handle will take some effort to pull of as they are on tight

I did it this morning and almost smashed my self in the face with it (I did this on my BMW and cut my eye!!).

I dont think the gear really matters but I would recommend 3rd or D.

1, Put selector in to 3rd or D
2, Pull out the button and use a cable tie or some other form of wedge to keep it out at the bottom of the button
3, push the shaft sleeve down by about 5mm. Its a bit stiff and will need some pushing. When you done it right you will hear it click. I used the flat surfice of my pen knife blade
4, pull up on the knob as had as you as can. But make sure you stuck the selector open. I dont know what damage this will do to the small plastic section that this knob clips in to.

O yeah, and keep your head out of the way as it will come off with some force.

But thinking about what happened last time I hit my self in the eye I learnt to keep my head away.

Yeah i'm all good man, That was done years ago.
That was a BMW gear shifter. I got in trouble in work, they thought I did it on perpus so i could go to a car show.

The Audi knob is back on and working.
Just make sue the button is out all the way and you put it on straight. If the knob is on an angel it will not fit correctly. No need to force it on either. A gentle tap at the end is all thats needed.
I'm having issues getting the chrome sleeve back up to lock it in to place. I can't get enough grip on it.

Do you know if the Auto knobs from other Audis/VAG will fit a B5?
