As above-

My 05 sportback loses power/cuts out (has stalled twice) occasionally- the common denominator seems to be when I go over bumps/pothole infused roads. Doesn't happen every time, but a speedbump/bump/pothole is always the catalyst for it!

Any thoughts? Have scanned via vcds but no fault codes relating to the prob (one for a electric window, one for aircon I already knew about).

Any thoughts??

I see you have bumped the page mate - I would suggest that the lack of replies are due to nobody having had the same problem

I have certainly not heard of it !

Only thing I can think of is a loose connection somewhere, possibly in the injector loom or the fuel pump, causing an intermittent fault.

Hope you get it sorted

Cheers Mike - No joy checking connections - its still the same.

I scanned with VCDS - apart from probs with aircon / lights i knew about - its throwing up a 01314 code regarding the engine control module - might this be affecting it?

Cheers Mike

So there seems to be an issue with the ECU judging by the Ross-Tech site, connection problem (either internal or external).

The other code 00188 appears to be related to the ignition - if I'm right, if this is dodgy it'll kill the power, yes?

I'll get my brother in law to have a look at the car at the weekend - I've heard you need a heatgun to remove the ECU shroud!

Failing that, can I check terminal 50 - is that a relay switch?

Not sure about terminal 50 mate - sorry

Just noticed that at address #44 mileage is shown as 3440km

Has something been replaced to your knowledge ?

I replaced the battery around the start of December - would this have caused it?
I also slid into a kerb around this time, knocked the wheel a bit but no damage - would this have affected the ABS signal problem

Cleared the DTCs - haven't popped up since yesterday anyways.
Totally stuck. The car only judders and stalls if I have my foot on the throttle over the bumps, if I coast over them using the clutch in then it continues over them as it normally would.

Does this narrow it down any?

Cheers for the help guys - at a total loss here!

Right, went a week with the car as normal. Quit
Stalling just as my mechanic took a look at it - sods law and couldn't recreate it!
He checked over all connections and everything seemed ok.
Until today, stalled badly going over bumps and on the dual carraigeway. At one point it stalled pretty badly, with the glowplug light flickering in the dash and a clicking sound coming from behind/under the steering wheel. Then, within a few seconds, it returned to normality again!

Any thoughts on this? Is there anything I could measure with live data via vcds? Is it a relay (have heard there are some below the dash?)

50 terminal is the starter cranking feed but shares the same multi plug connection under the engine bay fuses and relay plate as the voltage supply relay for the engine ecu, so you have a small indication your fault may lie there.

You need to establish if the ecu is losing its 30,31 and 15 inputs when it cuts out

You can do this by back probing the ecu and connection a voltmeter or checking the voltage supply with vcds

In both cases you will need to drive around with either connected to monitor but I would simply check all connections on this circuit for loose pins or corrosion

Also don't ignore the can crashing again you can check this in mvb 125 in address 19 amongst others as there's a drop between abs and engine ecu.

The benefit of address 19 shows you all the drive train status with 1 = working and 0= not working but if it flickers between 1 and 0 then you have a contact problem either internally or externally on the highlighted control unit (in your case engine ecu)

Good luck and yes you will need to remove the tamper bolts by applying heat then use mole grips to remove them but not to much heat as your heating the ecu casing (they are a ******)

Cheers A8 tech - will get on it.

Update - the car had a bit of bother starting and the glowplug light was flickering. Scanned and it came up with a fault:

16705 Engine Speed Sensor G28 : Implausible Signal.

According to Ross-Tech this means the sensor is kaput/faulty or the wiring attached to it!

Does this sound like i might have found the solution to this annoying problem??? Hope so!!!

On the offchance, does anyone have the part no for this bad boy (G28 sensor)??

Thanks all for the assistance - hopefully getting near the end!

Could be the problem but substitution is the only real way of checking I think.

If somebody could confirm that another name (ETKA name) for G28 speed sensor is 'Impulse sensor crankshaft' then the part number is :-

036 906 433 B.

Update on this:

Mike, cheers - that was indeed the part number, got the G28. After getting it, and with the car nigh on impossible to start, it threw a 16706 No Signal code. This was accompanied by serious power loss and revving.

My brother in law went to fit it this weekend, thought it would be a fifteen minute job. Boy, were we wrong!

It was located next to the flywheel, so a lot of stripping out had to be done before getting near to it. Even then, the sensor, approximately 2" in depth, was in some sort of hole that an allen key had to be inserted, blind, into. Even then the allen key had to be worked at an angle due to the shape of sensor but could get no purchase on it!! sensor here: http://images.esellerpro.com/2366/I/437/6/036906433E.JPG

So, to get at it - the gearbox had to come out. Long story short, it's in and the car is driving dandy again - actually better than i can ever remember. Cold starts are really smooth (the car used to jolt when starting) so am happy!

Thanks to everyone for the help!
