S3 PE1820 big turbo build

Welly great work youve done and good luck on your next chase nothing better than instant response when you hit the loud pedal, anyway have you tried Andy Forest Performance, well known tuner in subaru scene but also builds turbos to your needs. Very well respected and praised tuner and very oblidging guy if you can get hold of, be surprized if bill hasnt heard of him or come accross him, worth a try mate if gets you what you want. Good luck with the need for speed.

Cant wait for this :).

Just out of interest, where you got the mani from welly?

...Is the airfield drag race scrapped then.....lol

Not scrapped but delayed... need a hybrid S3 really to make the testing relative else its a bunch of std(ish) cars against a BT S3... there is another hybrid car lined up so will continue with it once thats sorted...

Airfield should still be up for the game, so won't be the end of the world. Annoying though, I was looking forward to it. :(

Would it not be better to stick a small port head on, ye it will choke earlier but will give you quicker spool and a lower boost threshold.

it wont

Dear god,

Please give us more hours in the day - they simply are not long enough.

Hugs,

Bill.

welly this 306 ur buying is it modded?

i sold my 306 dturbo to my mate and then he had it for a year or so then hes just sold it near tamworth. Its a long shot but would be funny if it was my old one :p

it was lowered on a spax kit, straight through exhaust, fuel pump tuned and turbo was turned up to 18psi (original k03). had some 17" tsw pace and angel eyes also. Be good if it was i like to see it go to a good home but now its with a dealer.

Na, wasn't from up that way. Been bolted up with it anyway, so will have to find something else to chug about in.

****** people!!

So it looks like it spools similarly to a ball bearing based turbo - not sure how it will spool on a 1.8 though as that was a 1.9. Probably have to factor in 300-400rpm.

This is my current plot of the mapping Nick has done with the igntion map - next step is increasing the boost from holding 22psi at the top range and spiking about 25 low down to about 26 and 24.

Yeah, not sure how it will respond on the 1.8, however if that's the case then that's the case, I'm trying to avoid lag as far as possible.

I am aiming for 22 PSI boost across the rev range ideally with this, maybe less - I don't want to push the turbo too hard.

pe is a ball bearing turbo!

and yes.... dyno lottery applies..
comparitive to the vf34 it ran before hand it was +50bhp more with pe1820 like for like boost... which was different between the dyno's as well as being different dynos of course so lottery still applies.

worth commenting on the pe1820 was only ever run on a jabba mani when i ran it. i got fed up with warping issues and blowing and ditched the jabba setup and went top mount and fp green turbo, which was 450bhp. pe1820 on the primary designs manifold i had commissioned was never a combo i ran personally. the tubular manifold will flow far better than the jabba mani it previously sat on. whether the turbos flow will justify it i dont know. it has been >500bhp on the fp red i ran on this manifold before i moved on to garrett gt35.

OK then, so it's on like Donkey Kong.

Runner is now sorted - bought a little gem bargain from Cirencester last night for £450. Tax till end of May, MOT till September. Here it is:

1.2 petrol engine - perma turbo lag basically. Still on the plus side, my mate drove the S3 home and it was nice to hear it being driven by someone else on the road - especially hearing her coming past.

The insurance is all sorted - how is it that the insurance on that Clio is only £174 cheaper than the S3? lol. Go figure.

I have spent this morning tidying out the garage awaiting the start of the project - I should be able to fit the car in now which is a result...

I have also been doing some fairly simplistic measuring up, and now have a list of what I need to buy.... gulp. Best get on with that then...

So, on Saturday night I shall be starting. Salute to the hybrid :salute:.

not to stand on daves toes, but if your going bigger on injector front, i'd be looking at the new EV14 items. They're far better at low pulse widths than the siemens decas even though they're larger, so will result in a better idle and smoother transitions etc.

and you know this how?

From a few reputable sources over on SRS, and first hand from a few people who have run both on their S4's.
please share the info you have read... it would be interesting to see.

Having run siemens 620's and 750's myself and on other 1.8t's, I can confirm they have no issues what so ever, so to improve on something which does'nt actually have an issue, sounds difficult to quantify to me.

Dave's will be fine on wellys if welly was to but them.

Which Welly is..... Thanks Dave :)

Considered IHI vf22 ? around £200-300 with potenial of 350 at 1.4bar

OK, so the first evenings work on the S3 has gone well. Very well in fact.

Spent 3 hour working on the old girl tonight, and now find myself with nothing to do expect for extract the downpipe... So have come in early for some CoD.

Anyway, started off by backing her into her new home for a while. Was really pleased as there is enough room for the car, and to move around. One of the benefits of having a reasonable size garage.

Then moved through the motions of head and turbo removal - same old drill. Another wasted looking brand new head gasket and head bolts in the bin.... Hmm. I look at the head gaskets and just see money down the drain.

The XS Power manifold is still in A1 condition - no cracks, no warps, just was blowing from 2 loose nuts on the manifold - head flange (2 that are ********* to do up I might add). Still, have been thoroughly impressed by this bit of kit for the money. Flows well, even after I have been using it for about 5 K.

K04 hybrid also looks good - no cracks in the hotside, no play in the turbine. Spot on. I was a little sad to take it off I must admit. That little turbo is a very impressive bit of kit, and has far surpassed my expectations from it. Round of applause for the hybrid. :salute:

So then, need to start thinking about how this IHI is going to fit.... To the drawing board we go....

Good work dude, bet you can take the head off with your eyes closed now lol

Thats a impressive power curve. It hit holds peak power for near 2000 rpm, the top end pull must be immense.
