Loud droning noise.

I've developed a loud droning noise, seems to be coming from the back but I cant be certain. It increases with speed from about 30mph and and reduces when slowing. I'm thinking it's a wheel bearing.

Anyone else had this?
Only done 70k would be suprised if it was.
 
Hopefully a simple enough job to fix, might whip the wheel off tomorrow and see if I can re-grease it.
 
So do I, seem to have spent a fortune on it since Christmas.

Been doing some more research, seems wheel bearing failure are quite common.
 
The wheel bearing will be a sealed unit I am afraid so you won't be able to regrease it.

You could try jacking each wheel up in turn and rocking the wheel top and bottom, and side to side to see if there is any play. Also when jacked spin the wheel to see if there is any noise, you will hear the pads making slight contact with the disc which is normal. Also how recently were you're tyre pressures checked?
 
mine is making the same noise im thinking it could be a wheels bearing but am at a loose end as there is no play in the wheels and no noise when spun only makes a noise at speeds of 30mph upwards any ideas its driving me nuts ??

Bet you can't spin it at 30 mph pal !!!

Not that expensive to replace are they ?
 
no i dont think i can fella lmfao , dont know havent put a new bearing in there yet as im sure its a new hub is required

Don't think you need a new hub. If no one has come up with the info. I'll look in ETKA tomorrow and get back.
 
Tyre pressures are spot on.

I'll see if I can find which one it is. Only had MOT last month :ermm:
 
Had the wheel bearings go on my front passenger side. Parts are approx £70 (from quick search HERE), unfortunately i didn't have a go at it myself but its pretty hard to take off (may need to heat up first to let it expand) and you then need a clamp to compress the new bearings in, i think i payed £120 for labour. Good luck.
 
Easy way to check a bearing is to jack up the suspect wheel totally off the ground and spin the wheels and lightly touch the coil, if its gone it will be vibrating, if its not it wont vibrate. 9/10 works.

I have a droning noise sometime in my car in the mornings and at night and often it disapears when the girlfriend gets out of the car?! :gaehn:

Mine started making noise at 30mph but then after 2weeks i can hear the noise soon as i drive is driving me nuts. I purchased the rear wheel bearings from Audi cost 53quid each and the man at garage was going to do them yesterday but he discovered that the wheels needs the special key to release the bearing so he had to order it and for monday now
 
Just checked all four wheels.

No play or noise.

Took it out for another spin with a mate in the back. He think's same as me driver side wheel bearing dried up.

Not changing it until it get worse.

Just out of interest how much do audi charge to change a rear bearing?
 
My 07 is the same, thought it was the rear tyres when I bought it, so I changed them and it was slightly better as I had a flat spot on the one tyre but the noise still there.

It sounds like your driving on a concrete road soon as I'm doing 20 mph or more.

Was begining to think it was normal for this model but this road noise is bugging me now.

thats def is your rear bearing i have the exact problem and there is no peace till i get it done
 
Can't tell for life of me what side its coming from?? Mines covered 64k! surley a wheel bearing shouldn't be gone yet ?.
 
noise is getting louder but still no play. I'm 90% sure is driver side rear.
 
Have you tried switching tyres back to front to see if the noise moves with it? As well as bearings inner tyre wear can make the droning noise. I spotted on a golf forum some people have had the camber adjusted on the rear to a less negative number to stop the inner edges sawtoothing. It could be a bearing but at £100 a pop I would be moving my tyres for free first
 
mine are the same only a few months old too but they are budgets on the back of mine any thoughts on that ??
 
I dont think budget is the first indicator of tyre noise. There are plenty of expensive noisey tyres. Its more the tread design I think.
There is somebody on this thread getting the rear bearings done tomorrow - lets hope he posts his results. My car is droning, I have had all wheels off the ground. I cant find play anywhere.Tyres might be slightly sawtoothed but hard to tell. Will get the camber checked on proper kit at some point
 
Found a bit of play in the rear OS bearing, not side to side or up and down just a bit when turning the wheel forward to reverse.
The noise has got loud over the last 2 weeks and a bit of vibration too.

changed the bearing today, complete hub.

The vibration has gone and about 1/3 of the noise.

Now when I turn left the noise go's completely, it didn't do this before it was just constant.

i think the problem with my car was a break that was binding on a bit i spun the wheel with it jacked up and it didnt spin for long so im thinking the caliper is sticking a bit i took out the pads and filed down the edges a bit to make them loose and it improved it alot mpg has gone up too so might have to buy a new caliper soon i think
 
one of 2 option for me right now.

1: part ex on the weekend, we are changing it anyway as soon as we can.

2: £6 option :whistle2:
 
Forgot to update this.
Bought the tool to remove the rear hub bolt.
Took the other (N/S) rear off, smelt burnt.
Got the previously removed (O/S) wheel bearing, packed it with grease and fit fitted that too N/S.
Problem solved.

Total 15mins.
