I've had my s3 since january and all is well apart from a few irritating little faults.... The main one being the car over revving once the clutch is engaged.

I know a lot of s3 suffer with this and i thought it was a fairly easy fix (just changing the clutch switch) but i have changed mine for a new one and the problem is still accuring. Anyone have any thoughts on what else it could be??

It's not the end of the world but it is quite irritating as im sure a lot of you will of experienced!!!

Cheers in advance

Have you got access to VCDS? If you clean your throttle body and re-align it with VCDS it may help.

No i havent got access to VCDS unfortunately but i did wonder at first if the problem was related to the throttle body. i was just wondering if there was any other common issue that causes this fault as im probably going to have the car serviced soon and if i cant sort the problem myself ill get it looked at then. Its just id like to have an idea what it could be/fix it myself if possible so i dont get charged loads of labour for a mechanic to investigate the problem.

Welcome to my world, 100 or so revs on gear changes.
Ive changed the clutch switch twice, took one apart and made sure everything was as it should be - no dice. The only time it's stopped doing it is when my speedo and fuel gauge weren't working.

Could it be the sensor that's on the gear box that's the problem?

Do the revs only climb when you dip the clutch or do your revs hunt around on normal idle in neutral too?

the revs climb when the clutch is dipped, mine is possibly more than 100rpm probably between 100-300 depending on how high up the revs the car is-the higher then worse it seems to be.

I don't think so, I replaced the vehicle speed sensor in the box as a matter of course when fault finding the lack of speedo etc. And there are no fault codes showing to do with the gearbox, it may very well be that, but Ive replaced the gearbox entirely, with all new sensors and it still does it.

It is very bizzare and read posts from other people saying they've had the same thing (new clutch switch not curing the problem) so if its a fairly common thing i would of thought someone would have found how to solve the issue but i cant find anything online... i wont be taking it to an audi dealership for them to bend me over tho!

Next time I speak to Dean @ 4Rings I'll ask the question for you. Also Bill might have some ideas.

i had the same problem except mine was over revving by 800 - 900 rpm on gear changes, i managed to fix it and now it only over revs by about 100 which from what I've seen and heard about other cars about 100 is normal

things i did were clutch switch, dump valve, N75 valve, new MAF and cleaned the throttle body

Is the car mapped? I had this once i mapped my car, changed the clutch switch but it still did it a bit and then my clutch went so i've had to turn my revo map off and not noticed it since. I expect it will still be there when i turn it back on but i found it easy enough to change my drive style to let off accelerator before depressing the clutch. Still a bit of a mystery though!

I too have replaced the clutch switch and still get over revving by 300-500 rpm when changing gear.. Its a major pain in the back side when one wants to do a bit of 'spirited' driving!

You've replaced a fair bit there danger.. i think MAF is next on my hitlist, although might be selling up and getting an 8P in May so will see what happens closer to then.

New MAF here, no difference.

Mine also used to jump by c.900 revs and now it only does it by 100 too. It's happened on my a3 1.8tqs and my s3, both of which started after a remap. I had a motech map on the a3, with the s3 having run an R-tech map and a Badger 5 map. When my speedo etc. wasn't working, because of a short from a stripped wire, I think what ever was shorted out included the s3's ability to sense the depression of the clutch pedal and as such it had no idea what was happening and it didnt over rev.

i replaced them because VCDS said N75 was dodgy, when i took the clutch switch off it was well nackered, dump valve because its got a spring and will be tired and week after 100k miles, MAF for the same reason as the dump valve (it made a difference to the MPG). that's just the stuff i did when fixing the over revving problem hehe

I dread to think how much ive spent on other stuff most of it "preventive maintenance" :-S but it is running alot better than when i got it in the summer so its worth :-D

i thought that if you didnt lift off the gas pedal when dipping the clutch then the revs would climb anyway... Didnt know about a clutch switch. So the clutch swith is supposed to allow you to dip the clutch and keep the gas pedal in a fixed position and the revs dont climb?

yes the car has a revo remap and the dump valve was done at the same time so its an uprated recirculating valve. Seems strange to me that the remap would make this happen but i suppose if all the cars that are suffering with this are mapped that it may well be the problem... I know what you mean about changing your driving style but lifting off the gas a second or so before changing gear is ultimately making the car slower flat out which is annoying trate in a performance car!

It's also worth noting that the two Audi dealerships I have been to have had no idea about an over reving problem. I just got a funny look from them both and wentto TPS

I think the clutch switch is used for the cruise so maybe a fault in that? its been asked countless times, and there as never been a definitive answer.. the only common thing ive seen is it happens to mapped cars mainly..
It is ****** annoying and makes you look like a ****......lol, i wondered if a sprint booster would cure this :

I thought the clutch switch was only used for the cruise control (which I dont have) but running the car without one just makes mine over rev by 900-800 revs again.

The internal workings of the switch are also very delicate and very fiddly, Im pretty sure that the first switch I tryed wasn't actually moving the switch mech inside.

Sounds like you boys maybe need your maps tweaking to suit the car.

What a total pain in the ****!! i might give revo a ring and see if they no anything about this?? i would imagine the answer will be a solid 'nothing to do with us' but worth a shot maybe!

There are also two different clutch switches.

There are also two different clutch switches.

How do you mean? two on the car or two versions of the switch? because the one i fitted was slightly different to the one that came off the car.

Two different versions of the switch. I.e. I went to check what Welly's was like and it was a different colour and shape IIRC.
Where as the two I got looked like this

Welly's is a prefacelift and mine is a facelift. I thought I had the wrong switch to begin with but AFAIK Tuffty has one of the above

Yeah the new one i fitted from audi was like the ones above and the one that came out was a shorter unit and was greener.

That sounds like what I remember Welly's being like, there is something else at fault here, but I don't know what it is...

Im sure with some S3's that the clutch switch is the only problem, but I dont think it was on mine, it has helped to significantly reduce the over revving but it hasn't solved it.

Mine does it aswell completely standard, i had a busted clutch switch and ive been driving round like it for a few months, replaced it with a new switch which looked different to the one i took out and nothings changed i just put up with it now unless there is a fix for it ?

Thats interesting that your having the same problem with no map. What engine code is your car? mines an AMK and i was wondering if these engines are more prone to it than others? Either way don't give up i'm sure there is a fix and enough people seem to be suffering with this problem that im sure some1 on here will have the answer

If i discover was causing it on mine ill stick the answer on the FAQ sticky's

My over revving started when i broke the clutch switch fitting a new stero (dont ask..)

Mines is a non mapped AMK engine and i dont have Cruise either..

The fact it only started once the switch brtoke perhaps suggests its a software issue and something needs reset in VCDS?

I changed my clutch switch (about 2 years ago) and it worked - I pulled the plunger part out completely (you can hear it click), kept the pedal in its natural resting position using some blocks of wood and gently located and seated the switch - job done. No over-revving since.

I did break the first switch I bought due to my own stupidity and had to get another new one but it did work and still works for me.

just a thought. when i purchased a new sensor the guy told me not to press the sensor before fitting otherwise it wont set correctly with the pedal.

AMK aswell, likewise if i find its cause its going in the FAQ so everyone knows.

i have this problem with my s3 too, which is remapped by APR, revs up by approx 100-200 rpm between gear changes, has anyone found a definate fix for this yet? i was think of trying a clutch switch but sounds like most people have had much luck with them?

Another amk engined car that has the same problem. Changed the switch and it's still the same...

Just a thought -

I replaced a brake switch on my sisters 06' Polo recently and noticed that the new switch would not operate the brake light when the pedal was depressed unless the switch was locked into place fully (to the point where you could no longer twist the switch any further).

Could a similar mechanism be in place on the clutch switch? If there is, I would check to see if the clutch switch is locked in place - just be carefull you don't apply too much pressure (that's how I broke the first switch....)

Perhaps there's a way of checking the switch is operating through VCDS?

lol there's no point bothering with this over revving issue. I've been told by Audi specialists it causes no harm and Audi themselves don't even know what the problem is! I changed my clutch switch but didn't make a difference so i have to live with it. I don't even notice it anymore because it's been there for so long lol.
