After the success of the guide for fitting puddle and warning lights on the A3 (http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/new-a3...my-diy-guide-retro-fitting-puddle-lights.html) i have decided to do a guide for the A4 which is for the B6 and B7 models.

Points to note:

- Vagcom is not needed, the puddle and warning lights do not need to be coded on the A4.
- Door card clips are very brittle so they can break when removing the door cards, these can be bought from Audi cheap incase they do break.

Firstly you need to remove the doors cards.

On the front doors you need to remove the door trim (this pulls off and slides forwards) which gains you access to the 3 screws, remove these.

Remove the cover underneath the door handle (this is only on the drivers door, the passenger side has 2 screws under the door handle).

Remove the 2 screws underneath this.

PICT8036.jpg

Remove the screw from the bottom of the door card.

PICT8037.jpg

The door card will now pull off.

Remove the door handle pull cable connector from the door card and the electrical connections from the door controller and the speaker.

Now you will need to create the hole for the puddle light, i use a drill to make lots of small holes and then a file to clean the edges up.

The red plastic reflector on the end of the door card can be popped off and the warning light fitted into its place.

Now to the electrical part.

Remove the pink plastic part of the connector by sliding it down. This will allow you to pull out the connection block.

PICT8045.jpg

Now to fit the loom.

Supply to the lights comes from pin number 13 (Post 07 May cars supply is pin 16).

PICT8046.jpg

Now the earth wire needs to go into pin 21 however this is already been used by the window switch therefore it needs to be shared.

Remove the existing wire out of pin 21 and solder it to the wire on the loom.

PICT8050.jpg

PICT8052.jpg

Push the wire into pin 21.

Connect the other end of the loom to the puddle and warning light. You are now ready to refit the door cards, ensure that you refit the door handle cable and electrical connectors.

Check that the lights are working, on a 2003/4 A4 they worked straight away however on a 2006/7 A4 the following step was required to get them working:

Remove the passenger side sill cover (marked in red), this pulls up as it is clipped on.

PICT8075_1.jpg

Then remove the plastic side piece which the sill cover is attached to.

PICT8077.jpg

Behind this plastic cover you will see a bunch of electrical connectors, you need to disconnect the black connector (furthest one away from you) and then reconnect it up. This resets the control module allowing the lights to work.

Thats job done for the front doors.

The rear doors are very similar, remove the door cards by removing the door trim and removing the screw underneath it and also the screw underneath the door handle.

Remove the door card and drill the holes for the puddle lights in the same way as the front door cards.

Now remove the small brown cover from the door controller connector.

PICT8055.jpg

The supply for the lights is pin 2 and the earth is pin 6, the earth does not need to be soldered as the pin is already free.

Refit the brown cover.

PICT8067.jpg

Connect the looms up to the lights.

Refit the door cards.

Check that the lights are working, on a 2003/4 A4 they worked straight away however on a 2006/7 A4 the following step was required to get them working:

Pull the rubber cover from the B pillar door connector.

PICT8060.jpg

PICT8076.jpg

Disconnect the plug from the car and reconnect it, the lights should be working now.

Here are the results!

If anyone is interested in this retro fit i can supply the looms and also can fit these to you car if required, please pm me for details.

do you mean the red warning lights?

if so then if you have those then you should have the puddles lights as they were part of a lighting package.

I have door marker lights but no puddle lights....

Nice guide Robin, thanks for taking the time to post it.

Can people who say they have the red warning light please check if this lights up when you open the door, it seems odd that you have the red light but no the puddle lights as they run off the same loom. The red 'light' is usually a red plastic cover with no bulb behind it.

Lol no it's definitely a red light!

I've heard before that it comes as part of an interior light package, but I had to retrofit the ambient LED's too. Mines a 2003 model, I think more of the later ones seem to come with reflectors instead of marker lights.

mine defo light up mate but no puddle lights ;-(

deffo have the red ones but no puddle lights, was this standard on the 6 cylinder models like rear electric windows?

hey now no need to name and shame like that lol and its a sports lol

If I'd wanted to name and shame I'd have mentioned it's a 100.

;)

ah you mofo lol its a sport to though lol

100% lights on all 4 doors and tailgate

its still a sports though grummble grummble hehehehehe

so just asked audi about the puddle lights they say they did not start to fit them till late 2003 to 2004 so the would be why some have just the red ones maybe ;-)

Part numbers are as follows:

white puddle light - 8D0 947 415 - £7.50
red warning light - 6Y0 947 411 - £10.50

you'll need these lights and a wiring loom to go from the door controller to the lights which i can supply.

hi robina3 the loom you on about will i need this if i have working red warning lights already

We're the tailgates on the estate always fitted with red lights and never just reflectors? Mine never used to light up until i took it out and put it back in. I have only got reflectors on the doors though...

The connector shown here is it behind the door card?

Does anyone also have the part numbers for the puddle lights and for the marker lights?

Thanks.

Another question, where can i get the pin connectors to solder on? If i could find these then i can do the wiring myself

hi robina3 the loom you on about will i need this if i have working red warning lights already

without seeing your existing loom i can't say if i can piggy back onto it, i could really do with a picture of your current loom to see if could piggy back onto it.

the only thing i can say without looking at it is my looms will work by means removing the existing pin which currently feeds the red light and plugging my loom in however i am not keen on this as i would like to find out if your current loom can be modified to run the puddle light as well.

thanks mate ill try get a pic of it at some point

I can do you a kit to make it plug and play however you will need to do a bit if soldering. Pm me if you are still interested.

ill get the door card off soon mate and pm you ;-)

hi again robin.

just a quick post regarding your looms and lights.
if anyone is thinking of fitting these, then robin is defo your man.
excellent quality looms and a nice fella to deal with.
the door lights look superb and add that bit of class.

thanks again robin for all your help fitting mine,
sorry about the weather last weekend, but the results were well worth drenching....lol.
keep in touch,

Alan.

I fitted my puddle lights today in my 2003 a4 2.5 tdi. The red warning lights were already factory fitted so I just tapped into the loom for them, I needed to unplug the rear doors via the B pillar to get the rears to come on.

i did this at the weekend and all for a fiver ..i went to scarpyard cut off a 32 pin block for the pin connetors i needed and got puddle lights and footwell from a passat (all the same) door maker red lights came from a4 b6 would of cost about 65 ish pound from audi

ivv got puddle lights an dont see the point of them on my avant sport got footwell lights too oh yeah and the armrest lights up when you lift the lid! got no cruise or dis tho rather have this any day!

hi robin,

any news on fitting the footwell lights on the b7 avant.

regards,

alan.

if you have the red door lights and no puddle lights then with the door card still on pull the red light out and piggyback a wire onto the earth and positive wires on this light, then cut out the blank for the puddle light and with a piece of stiff wire poke it through the puddle light hole so it comes out of the red light hole as its only 8 inch away and then pull back the wires you have just fixed onto the redlight wires, attach to puddle light bulb holder push into the door and job done. No messing about with looms. Of course this wont work unless you can feed the wire through. i am going to try this on sat so will let you all know if it can be done.
