Can some one post a link of a VAG.COM cable that will work on my 8p

Dont buy the cheap ones. Get a proper one from Nigel, loads of members on here have bought vagcom off him.
And it will pay for it self when you want to code or scan for faults.

i was looking at the spec's on alot of cables last night the only ones that work are the genuine ross-tech ones the cheap ones dont work full stop save up and get the genuine one of nige

they might want more than a tenner
what do you want doing

The cheap ebay ones won't work as the 8P needs a CAN interface and the the ebay copies are all HEX I believe.

Your only options are the genuine Ross-Tech cables, either the full HEX+CAN one or you can save a bit of money by getting the Micro-CAN, which is all you need for the 8P but won't do many other vehicles.

would these work on a mac and how much do they go for

VCDS cables and software is not designed to work on a Mac. ( See RT FAQ's. 1.8 )

Some people have got them to work but RT do not consider Mac as a suitable platform from which to operate.

Deleted as do not want to offend people who payed the full price.;) or resellers ...

Please don't post links to cables that aren't genuine, looks like that one is using a cracked version of a Beta VCDS. (IMHO)

Just purchase the genuine cable and have a fully supported diagnostic system, that has regular updates to access new modules.

I am on my third version of Genuine Ross-Tech cable.

mate most people cannot justify the price so buy these .end of the day people probably test it then if they become a garage they buy the proper version .doesnt matter if its posted here its freely available freeware online everywhere.its not the full version but it gets people with less dosh out the doo doo

I agree with Steve L. If like me you want to do the odd bit of coding or enable a function or two then they work fine. If I ever need more then I would consider the real thing. If it works then Im certainly not gonna lose sleep over the fact that its a copy. Mind I don't know how true this is but I was told you have to make sure your internet is off as the programme tries to connect to ross-tech and can disable the copied cable.

Thanks.

I used the Ross-Tech very generous upgrade path, even got to keep my old original Dual K-Line serial cable.

If there is an internet connection present it will check your version against the latest available version, and then ask you if you want to upgrade. You just click 'no' and that's it, you can then use the cable.
If you do download the upgrade then yes the cable will stop working, but it doesn't automatically upgrade it or get disabled just because you are connected to the internet.

Bought an original lead, used it loads of times & i'm safe in the knowledge that i get all the updates available. You always have the option of buying a pirated clone and in a lot of cases it will work fine but if Ross Tech make major changes then your on your own. Im sure as they support this forum they will no doubt investigate the above link.

OOPS there could be trouble ahead ! If it was'nt such a good piece of kit it would not be copied :)

Why would anyone be offended? I can think of thousands of reasons to be offended other than the fact someone has bought a copy of an original product they paid full price for. Im also sure that Ross-Tech are aware of the copies unless they've been living on mars. Don't know what the big deal is. We can all make informed choices in this free world.

Btw no offence was intended to anyone either directly or indirectly linked to this forum. I'm just a bit radgy today lol.

Isn't Ross Tech's VAG.COM software somewhat copied itself? From the VAG groups dealer scan tools?

No they have actually decoded the protocol between the dealer diagnostics and vehicle, they don't rip off the actual software / hardware that is running on the official diagnostic equipment.

They reverse engineer the protocols used to talk to the car modules.

You can buy any amount of crap on e-bay for your A3 from VCDS leads that don't work to roof spoilers that do not fit. another thread today is moaning about e-bay S-Line badges that corrode. Wafer thin carbon sticky sheet that just wears through, lamin-x that falls off, cheap copy wheels with doubtful safety, Crap after market mats and LED kits that don't work..
The lesson here is if you want Vauxhall quality buy a vauxhall, if you want Audi quality buy Audi. Buy a proper VCDS lead and register it and apart from Nige here who is a mine of info if you have a genuine lead, you also get access to Ross techs technical guys. the lead/software will be updated as and when and when you sell your car there are any number of people willing to buy your proper lead back so the real cost might only be £50.
It never ceases to amaze me the amount of people who will buy flash wheels , coilovers, new front ends, led rear lights etc but throw their hands up at the thought of buying something useful..

Lol Paddy :D Never fail to raise a smile on my boat!

Ahh cheers for the explanation Gti Jazz Blue, I only mention it as the Ross Tech website itself describes the VAG.COM sys as, I quote...

VCDS is a software package for Windows that emulates the functions of the dealers' very expensive proprietary scan tools

What we are debating seems somewhat ironic after reading that, lol wouldn't you agree... Although Ross Tech has reversed engineered (emulated/copied and improved upon) this system as you say and the ebay copies are just blatant rip offs.

BTW for the dude that asked about running VAG.COM on a mac you need to either partition your disk using Bootcamp (see youtube- copy of window required and wired mouse/keyboard) or obtain Parallels desktop and run windows on a virtual machine, then you can run windows and Mac osx side by side... Again see youtube :)
