I'm currently in Afghanistan and am desperately trying to find a car for when im back as the run about i have is almost dead, ive been looking at the a3, golf and leon now im wondering if people on here with a bit more car knowledge and know how would be able to help im after the following car specs

A3 tdi s-line
Golf GT TDI (sport) 140/170
Leon FR TDI

Now i have up to 11k for the right car im not sure what that will get me spec wise but im guessing more for the leon and little less for the golf and even more so for the a3

If anyone can help, point me in the right direction of what to look for and for good cars i would be hugely appreciative

you won't get a massive amount for £11k if you're looking for an A3 TDI. they hang onto their value like you wouldn't believe lol. that said, of the 3 you've listed the A3 is the car that i'd have no doubt

for that price you might be looking at an older car. some of them are prone to cracked cylinder heads and failed turbos. if you have a search on here you'll find a few threads on both.

S-Line is the nicest. what spec is entirely up to you. you might need BT, it might not be important. you might want nav, or just use an A-Z. whatever you buy have a good play with everything and make sure it all works as intended. pretty much everything can be retrofitted if you want to buy a lower spec car and wait until you have a bit more cash. the most complicated things to do are auto lights/wipers (need a new windscreen) and xenons (cos you'll need auto levelling and washers if you wanna do it properly). if either of these are important to you then try find a car with them from the factory. parking sensors and nav (if you don't have double DIN) are tricky to do but possible just in case you wanted those.

best of luck anyhow.

We will probably seem biased on this forum but sitting inside - the A3 is the nicest place to be. In terms of performance/handling etc they will be pretty much the same but you would get more for your money with the Leon and to a lesser amount, the Golf.

Pretty much agree with the above comments. I've owned an FR and a cupra and bang for buck I don't think the Leon can be beaten especially for the money your looking to spend. Not wanting to sway you away from Audi though (as Im a recent convert too) but have a look on the vagoc site. You will get a broader opinion on all vag brands.

well ill have 40k but i dont want to get into the i have money i will spend it bracket i had with previous cars so thought id try limit myself, 11/12k

Commend you for working in theatre its a tough job
I'd go for a Leon with that money

I would have thought a nice A3 20T could had for 11K, however I would be tempted with a Mk5 Gti. Maybe a rare early model in laser or shadow blue. Candy white is nicey but they rare as rocking horse ***** it would seem.

BTW, much respect for the work you fellas do out there:salute:

Do you really need a diesel? If you don't do that many miles, I'd be tempted with a petrol. The MkV GTI is a good shout and you could probably get a nice Leon Cupra for that money as well. Both would be much more fun. But, if you need the economy, I think all 3 cars you've listed are nice - the pecking order has been stated above so it depends if you value badge or spec/age more?

Whilst reckonising the Golf is a cracking car and you can buy a one owner 57 plate 1.9Tdi Match with sub 40,000 miles for about £7500 (trade)2.0Tdi 9k+ I would personally still be wanting an A3. Much nicer interior and overall style and ambience. Seats OK but further down the VAG food chain.. nothing wrong with any of them even Skoda... now for 11k what about a Yeti???

for that age of car you won't get an S-Line as they never made an 8P2 1.9 TDI S-Line and for £11k i doubt you'd get a 2.0 TDI S-Line that's in good nick with sought after extras. fair advice tho
