Oil change by National Tyres

Hi all,

I think I've seen a similar post somewhere on here so I apologise if I'm creating a new thread.

My question is has anyone tried the oil changes by National Tyres? I normally change oil myself but I've just looked it at their website and they will change the oil on my tired old 530d and the wifes new (to us) A4 2.0tdi for the same price as it normally costs me to change the oil myself on just the Beemer. Two for the price of one and no laying under the car in February!

.... and it's with the good Castrol Edge stuff I normally use.

I think my questions are:

1. Do we trust that they are using the correct Castrol Edge Oil?
2. Do we trust the quality of the oil filters they provide?

i wouldnt trust them to bolt a wheel on my car

How much are they actually charging though, all in?

I tend to buy my own oil and have a garage do the rest for me.

If i were you i would go down there and ask them.
 
If you've got both cars to do, look on eBay, they do discounts on large barrels.
 
Even if you supply your own oil, what guarantee have you got that they'll actually use it...

Buy the oil from a decent motor factors and do the job yourself.
 
I think I'll take the advice of going and talking to them. I'll go Saturday and report back, I'll be wanting to see the oil, look at the spec sheet etc. Same will go for the oil filter.

Rowdyboy: I've searched high and low on ebay as recently as yesterday and i can't find anyone selling barrels of Castrol Edge. I am a fan of the oil based on my 215,000 mile 530d that still doesn't burn any oil and has always used Castro Edge with a change every 10-12,000 miles.

If you can find someone who sells it please send me a link.

I have used National Tyres in the past for oil changes on a Mondeo and Cavalier.
They often did a voucher deal that was good value and used the oil they quoted for.
The problem i had with them is that they dont do many oil changes being a tyre depot so they were not familiar with the car, even a popular model like a Mondeo.
They had the tools but could not get the oil filter out of the engine bay because they were trying to get it out of the top past hoses etc. I had to tell them to remove the wheel arch liner to get it out.
They did this without qualm at no extra cost but i see on there website there may be a small charge for extra labour now!
Tell them exactly what you need & how its done and im sure you will be fine.
 
So just to get this straight, you paid someone to work on your car, then had to tell them how to do it?!?!? And you were happy with that??
 
The car was used for my job, i had no off street parking in central London, no tools & no where to dispose of the oil.
They saved me time, money and scrapped knuckles!

Yes i was happy, each to there own!
 
I have to admit I won't be over happy if I have to show them what to do. However the savings will help balance my annoyance :yum:

Taking my 530d as an example, it costs me £100 in parts (8 litres of oil and a filter) to do it myself. National will do it with the same oil for £50! I've not changed the Audi's oil yet but I'm guessing it's a similar ratio - £35 for National to do it or £70 for me to buy parts do it myself.

I'll let you know how I get on when I visit. If they won't guarantee the oil used and let me watch the Saxo driver do the work then they won't get hard earned £.
 
Fair play if you can get it for that price, I don't see how they can do it so cheap, using quality parts and oil. I get my parts (genuine) and oil at trade/cost price and couldn't get near that price and that's not including labour. Without wanting to teach you to suck eggs, but are they using the correct spec Castrol Edge?

Jaygeezer, like you say, each to their own.
 
Well there doing MOT'S for £27. guess i will be showing em how to pass it then! lol :laugh:
 
I think you hit the nail on thehead when you say "saxo driver".
These places have such a large turnover of staff that except for the fairly well paid manager that does not want to get his hands dirty no one has been there long enough to have a wide range of experience with many differant cars.
Yes we know how to unscrew a sump plug, drain it, remove filter, put back and top up but no two cars are the same.
In truth i have not attempted a DIY oil change with my audi so wouldnt know myself!?!
I will be interested to know how this goes as i have not been near them for about four years.

I'll be looking for the spec 507.00 on 5W30 Castrol Edge. I think this Castrol Edge is the same as the BMW Longlife 04 I've been using on my car.

If not I'll be pursuing the 'barrells' like those that you kindly sent me a link too.

A little late in replying all as it took me sometime to get round to trying National for an oil change. I opted against it on the Audi as it was due a full service, so I got a local Indy to do that for £200 in order to keep within the warranty requirements.

I did however take my Beemer to National Tyres on Saturday and they did an oil change with 7.5L of Castrol Edge for £50 - I checked the barrel they were using and it was Castrol Edge 5W30 fully synthetic. The only negative was they didn't have the correct oil filter in stock but they had one delivered within 20 minutes.

All in all quite impressed, and i'll consider it for the interim service on the Audi.
