Just bought one off ebay for £10.50 need to reblade it but thats cheaper than buying from the stealers ..

The 8P has a code in the immobiliser which only Audi Germany can read. Well that's almost true as there is a piece of kit only sold to verified specialists that can read the 'hidden' byte but as yet they have not developed it as far as the 2006MY.
The key from Audi is about £160 which includes getting the code from Germany and then the dealer matching the lock/unlock code which is done using VCDS or similar. The alarm and unlock/lock is totally separate from the immobiliser.
Also the blade length has changed and the new size is difficult to obtain and Audi will not sell them.
The one you have bought off ebay is only any good for opening the doors (after re-programming assuming the frequency is the same) and disengaging the steering lock. It will not start the car.
i bought key of ebay on same frequency then u need to get the pin code out of your dash and get a new chip programmed and coded to car ...

You don't say how you got the pin code !! Did you do it, or did someone with the kit I described do it for you ?
And what year is your car because it appears pre 2004 i.e 8P1 did not have a problem ?
Interesting guys. My chap has tried with his latest update software and couldn't do it.
Whilst I was there he rang the software support team and told them the problem and they said they had not completed development for that year of car (2006 MY).
He has all the blank modules and the kit to write them but can't yet get the 'hidden' bit.
Programming the unlock/alarm is no problem.
Presumably you have the new shaped key with the metal strip down the side ?

Yes 3 button but does it have a metal strip running down the opposite side to the keyblade and underneath ?
Reason I ask is because the 3 button key before this latest one with the metal strip down is easier to code.
Apparently the security was enhanced with the latest key. Also the length of blade on the latest one is shorter than the previous 3 button key. Not sure what difference that makes but apparently the blanks are hard to come by.
My key part number is :- 8P0 837 220 and the blade code is HAA

That's the difference then mate - you have the earlier key that can be copied.
At the moment mine can't which was the basis of my comment in the first place ! lol
Thanks for your input - helps other people to understand the difference in key coding (and copying ) between 8P1 and 8P2
I know mate - I haven't got one either for that very reason !

Audi have certain procedures to follow before they will release the coding and that, combined with the remote locking synchronisation and the cost of the key fob itself and cutting the blade comes to in excess of £150.
This only applies to the key fob shape as indicated in post #14. The previous 3 button keyfob can be reproduced much more easily.

Fossie, Prices seem to vary so much I thought I would get a local dealer quote. Didnt realise you confirmed it was £217.00for key and programming.
They should start wearing masks in the dealers (robbing B******S)
I didn't confirm it was £217 - I said it was in excess of £160 which everyone seemed to think was nonsense !!!
You can get a key to lock and unlock the car for less than £20 but it won't start it !!
And you can't just blame the dealers - it's the cost that Audi Germany charge to release the information coded at manufacture.
You should be pleased that they are protecting our investment by making it impossible to steal without a key and making the key so expensive that only idiots would try and buy one !!!lol

Was speaking to someone last night who knows a private individual,ex vw....who apparently can do everything the dealer can, chap says he has a security key fob to allow him full access to the official dealer vag site. I'll ring him on monday to see what he can do
Nice one animal - don't forget to tell him that the problem is with the new shape 3 button key on the 8P2 onwards. Mine's a 2006 MY but the new shaped key may have started in 2005.
I see yours is a 2009 MY so you could ask him to try and clone that ?!!
Will do mate, I had been following the thread and mentioned to my mate who's a mechanic - apparently this chap will do a lot more than the local dealers know how to do, proofs in the pudding so fingers crossed but good news that he's got direct access to the VAG main frame (if that's right)

But as the legal owner of the vehicle, there should be a route for you to get the security code for your car. After all the cluster containing said security code, no longer belongs to Audi, it belongs to you the owner.
I can understand the need to keep the code secret, but for those of us that would like that information, there should be some way of getting it. I'm suprised that the EU doesn't view this as a restrictive practice.

Jazz, some things like this are best kept as Audi have done, i for one am not disturbed by this...... next phase is selling on the programming to be able to rekey which means the chances of my car having a key cloned/made dramatically increase!!

Have you had a chance to speak to your mate yet animal ? I too only had one key when I bought the vehicle. I do have another that locks and unlocks but will not start. It will however take the steering lock off if ever I need it towing without the original !!
Yet you are comfortable with your mate having access to the VAG MainFrame ?
I guess we might disagree on this one, but I think that I should be able to make the choice about having the code for my car.

Paul you suggest that you as an owner should have access to your code,i have a mate who knows an ex vag tech who subscribes annually at a cost of approx 6k to the vag mainframe, explain who is most at risk bearing in mind that yours would be much more readily available, then read your comments back and have a word with yourself

Just because the guy spends 6K on a subscription, doesn't necessarily mean that he is an honest person (no offence to your mate).
All I'm saying is that should I decide that I want to have the code for my car - there should be a way to get it out of Audi. I'm not likely to leave it on a bit of paper in the car or lying about (mind frankly if I decide that is what I wanted to do - it should be my right to be able to do so).
I have VCDS so with that info I could order a new key from Audi and not have to pay the stealer to code a key using what is my security code from my instrument cluster (not Audi's) :thumbsup:.

Any news on this? In summary, whats the cheapest way to get a full working key for a 53 plate car (no silver strip)
Buy one off ebay with the correct frequency and get it recoded and rebladed at a VAG /autolocksmiths.
The earlier three button key like yours is easy to reproduce - it's the one with the strip down the side that we are talking about that is difficult to copy.
