Hi Guys,

owned my AMK s3 for around 6 months now, for a while it has been knocking fairlt loudly fron the front of the car when going over slight bumps in the road, my immediate thought was the anti roll bar bushes etc. So i bought an r32 23 mm front roll bar, bushes and a set of drop links :)

Had them fitted, it has made the noise alot better but i can still hear a faint knocking sound, i thought this would have cured the problem :(

is there anything else i should check peeps?

thank you:confused:

lee

Thanks mate, just done ARB bushes and a new roll bar and new drop links. Was set that this would fix it but seems like its still faintly knocking, not half as bad though

I had knocking aswell I changed what you have, but also done my wishbone bushes aswell my knocking went see if you have any play in the wishbones

yeah i will do, might be worth my doing wishbione bushes, ball joints TR ends etc, get the filter sorted?

Top mounts. Mine are making a clunking sound at the moment, and theyre quite guilty on these.

Jack the car up and see if you have any movement in an up-and-down motion on both front wheels. Always a good clue as to the health of the top mounts.

Whilst its up it'd make sense to check everything else too.

Hey guys, thanks for all the helpful replies. I jacked the car up, couldnt feel any play in the top mount area, knocking is just getting worse :( could it be anything else do you think or shall i just replace the top mounts first before i go buiying anything else?

thanks

lee

It COULD be the dog bone mount if that is very worn? But my money would be on the top mounts

just ordered some LCR top mounts and bearings guys, will let you know if it fixes the issue :)

Hi Guys, fitted my Leon cupra r top mounts and bearings? when all tightened when the strur was off the car there was a bit of play in the top mount? is this normal?

also it didnt fix my knocking issue, but looked at my front wishbone rear bush and they have cracks in them where they have started to seperate, could this be the culprit?

thanks

I haven't done my top mounts yet so can't comment on the play but I was involved in doing a spring change on an S3 today which had std top mounts and you could waggle them a tad... I would imagine the 'play' is actually the bearings but until I do this myself then I can't be sure...

As for your bushes while I cannot say if its causing your knoking noise they won't be helping if they are in that kinda state... do you have the voided bush in them? most S3's seem to come with those... mine did! the better ones to replace them with is the later TT ones as they are solid and work much better...

+1 , changed my voided ones with solid TT ones, it certainly added more feel to the steering, you could feel the movement in the front wheels more, less of the soft steering you get with standard.

+2 on changing to solid bushes on my a3, completely changed feel of the front end!

cheers for reply ppl :) ermm not sure on the bush tbh, what do you mean ? so would you not go for the Polybush route?

Why u think shocks sandip?

what i have done so far,

new roll bar and bushes
drop links
Top mounts and bearings

Yeah Leon Cupra top mounts have slightly more play in them than standards buddy, also the cup that sits on top does not stick up in the engine bay like the normal s3 ones. ?

so wold you recommend going for powerflex?

Don't use powerflex for that position... they split after a short time... powerflex for the front bush in the wishbone is ok, TT solid rubber ones for the rear of the wishbone... avoid the other type in the first link as they are voided type and will flex... GSF sell the TT ones for around £10 each

I followed this advice too from tuffty :) . I also changed front drop links and top mounts at the same time. Made a good difference.

I had the same issue as you, had a very annoying knocking for a while. I changed almost everything and then i give up. It was only when i uprated my dampers and got lowering springs that it went. My shocks were dead, after changing the dampers and lowering it, my ride actually got softer!

One thing i noticed on mine though is everytime i jacked the car up for a while so the damper opened fully, the knock would go away for a while. Once the car had settled down again the knock came back.

Did you check your dampers when the top mounts were done?

thanks for the replies again :) i didnt check my shocks no mate, tbyh it knocks straight away, i am just wondering whether the top mounts that i got are making it worse?

tufftybloke where is GSF, sorry to sound stupid lol,

thanks alot

Lee

anyone got the part number for the TT solid bush at all?

Just an update, i have ordered the solid TT bushes for my lower arms, fingers crossed this will fix the knocking so i can actualy spend some money buying some trick bits for it instead of fixing the blummin thing lol.

Do the front wishbone bushes tend to go aswell?

If you have the later large bush then yeah, they do go as they are voided... I fitted powerflex ones in mine as this position doesn't take the hammering the rear ones do

<tuffty/>

i have a facelift AMK bud, ahh right so its the front ones that differ in size?

yeah, earlier cars had smaller bushes but later ones had huge voided things with an alloy centre... if you have the earlier small bushes (solid rubber) then they should be fine but if you have the later larger bush with the void then I would be tempted to change them to the powerflex ones...

<tuffty/>

awesome mate, thanks for that, if i have a look tonight and see which one i have, will give you an update, cheers again matey

Does anyone know the numbers to look for on the lower arms to determine what bushes I need?

Hi Guys, Just jacked my driver side front up to have a play about and see if i can see anything obvious to why my car is knocking. If i grab the bottom of the wheel and pull towards me there is a bit of play in it? i would of thought this would have been the balljoint, but looking at it when pulling it it doesnt seem to move but the wheel does?

Could a wheel bearing be causing my herendous knocking?

but it sounds like its coming from both sides and i havnt checked the other side yet.

any help would be great lads :)

i can see where your coming from sandip, i will jack it up tomoro again and have a good play with it. good point S3 dave i hadnt checked the track rod ends when moving the wheel?

any other ideas, i am going to do my lower arm bushes anyway and put a new set of ball joints on just for safe measure.

i still say wishbone bushes (rear)

i bet when the wheel is on the ground you can move it from left to right with abit of force?

Will try that tomorow mate , thank you. i am just worried now that its a wheel bearing, but i think i would notice some noise if it was. I suppose when pulling on the bottom of the wheel it could be moving the rear bush. The rear bush is really worn and cracked.

My wishbone bush has been worn for nearly 2 yrs, it gets mentioned by my mot guy every year lol I'll get it done when it starts giving me issues

If you can remove the shock and check it then it would rule it out for sure, mine had nothing left in it, i didn't get the normal symptoms of a knackered shock
