AUDI A3 VS VOLKSWAGEN SCIROCCO - LETS GET THE DEBATE GOING :-)

Tell us more mate. This the chance to turn this into a proper debate.
What about 265bhp through the front wheels ?? Fuel consumption ?
I am going to look at one today but its got cloth interior etc and its £29k !!. any pointer would be great. :)

What to look at............

Usual stuff really. The engine is a tried and tested fit, manual 6 spd is a good box. 19's are desirable, RNS can be retrofitted for £500, latest Bluetooth for about £250.

The ride is great, I tend to have the DCC in Normal mode, sport tightens everthing up further, changes the steering feel too. MPG is high 20's to low 30's. Current long term average is on 31.2.

265 through the front wheels........ yes it can light them up in 3rd or 4th in the wet, torque sterr is a minimum, the XDS diff gives some assiatance, not to the extent a Quiafe does (had one on my Ed 30) but just nicely IMO.

The handling is the fun part, it really does handle well, not as well as a Cayman S (previous car), but well enough for me.

The seating position is really comfortable, and the R level of equipment is very high, the MFSW really is a MFSW, unlike the A3 2 roller button affair. The instrument functionality is nice to see, Oil temp etc all displayable.

I only sold the Cayman due to the offset seating position playing havoc with my lower back. The roc with some quirkyness is not a bad replacement.

I am enjoying the R, not saying that I will be there for the next 10 years, but I enjoy getting into it every morning.

Not as yet, but I keep seeing Porker anchors that I know I could shoehorn in! Saw some PCCB (Ceramics) go for very cheap money a few months ago................

Golf went way back in June 10, and was a pain to sell, everyone wants an Ed 30 for nothing! Was a minter too!

Bought a Cayman S, and loved it, totally impracticle, but what a laugh. except with the offset pedals my back gave me such grief! Could only frive it for 45-60 mins at a time!

i love the rocco R... i think with a few tweaks they look amazing & yes if it was 4wd I would want one over my S3.... They are very good looking... rears a bit ugly but still could live with it!

but Rocco R is surely comparable to the RS in terms of position stakes.....not suprising the S3 falls short of the mark

I thought I knew that name, nice posting Stokes, good feedback instead of speculative, I do like the Rocco in a sporty guise & spot on mate the interior is very comfy, you feel really at home, everything is well just there huh :)

Well i had a look, bit tight on the head room for me unfortunately..
I priced it up new though and it cam out about £2.5k more than a similar spec S3. People moan about the age of the S3 but in fairness it is now cheap because of it. Don't expect the next model to be anything less than a Rocco R or Golf R so think spec ed up £38k+ Suddenly the current S3 doesn't seem a bad price :)
If anyone else is interested its a nice car

Both cars are cracking cars. Roc suits me, I did look at Dave S3's Lambo blue S3 (was for sale on here), was going to chop the Roc for it, but Looked at the whole equation........Sorry Dave

I have a Roc R, and it is a great place to be. Yes it is quirky, but I like it.

My GF has a 170 TDi Black edition company car, with 3 out of 4 wheels with extra modification............Less said the better!

The Roc interior is so much better IMO. People will say that I am comparing a top of the range R to a lesser Tdi, but the Audi layout is not right, very dated, same as her previous 3 A3's.

My biggest bugbear is the 12v plug that you often plug satnav/Phones into, just in the wrong place, just next to the handbrake, small gripe, yes.

The R is a great car, so is the S3. Both are very desirable cars TBH.

Ps I paid £26k with RNS 510, Dynaudio, 19's, Folding mirrors, Leather, rear parking, and 5k miles, elec diff XDS Dcc (adjustable suspension that works - 3 settings). Not bad. Now got Bluetooth, rear camera and a whole lot more.

I do like the A3/S3, but it is dated.

Looks well, lovely car, but like the old Raddo....why do VAG put their coupes on stilts.?

Drove a 200Ps version, very good, would like to try one of these.

Shame about the rusty discs. Clearly not as safe to use as an S3 ;-)

Sorry... but as a previous Roc fan the latest version doesn't work for me.... those as old as me may remember the Austin Allegro 3 door.. horrible styling !! Spot the similarity. I would rather compare the newer Golf to the S/A3 as for me VW have lost the plot with the new Roc. MAybe not a view many want to hear but it's definately mine.... now the Alfa Guilietta... there is a bit of style but that's only a Fiat in drag so please stick with Audi for the total package.... ;-)

Sorry but to me its a Ford Puma :)

try having a look at your own brakes after it's been raining or you've washed it. i assure you they'll be rusty as well. in fact the 'Rocco R probably uses EXACTLY the same brakes as the S3, so what exactly you're trying to say with that statement is anyone's guess

except the 'Rocco is an updated version of the S3's chassis - so it's an Audi in drag but with better technology, better handling, better ICE...

i'm not even a fan of the 'Rocco, but your total lack of objectivity infuriates me lol.

So it should be given better technology.... its a whole generation in front of our 8P's!!

For me the Rocco was something I twisted my neck to see everytime i saw one after launch, now its just 'another car' because theres so many about (in white too!!), most dont have xenons or DRL's and so look boggy standard with their ****** yellow lights - its not anything special at all in my eyes and does not seem an entire generation ahead of our 8P's - sure its better equipped but im willing to bet the residuals are worse than an 8P S3 - but then I haven't included the 'R' in that because i've never seen one - the pic above looks nice, but as said by another member....it doesn't look like anything that makes me want to deface his bonnet with my children! instead it looks like someones bought a blue Rocco, been and bought some OZ alloys and fitted 4x4 springs.....yeah id swap my S3 for one any day of the week - ****** LIKELY!!

The S3 is often criticised for not looking different enough from the rest of the A3 range, IMO the Rocco R is just as gulity on that score. I think it looks nice in the same way all Roccos look nice, however it doesnt stand out as being the daddy of the Rocco range. Bit of a shame that.

For all its age faults and design the S3 has that little something that makes it appear a quality car and looking at them side by side yesterday you have to say that there is something really solid about the 8p in its stance and aesthetics that is just missing from the Rocco. The Rocco looks like it might dent if you lean on it.....Its just to near to the megane coupe the new focus coupe the vauxhall coupe and a dozen others, take the badges off them all and no one would no which is which where as an Audi is somehow an audi.......even de badged.

Absolutely.
Makes replacing the S3 so difficult for me.

glad we all have that settled then ;)

I looked high and low before settling back on another S3, there really is nothing to compare it IMO...its never been amazing at anything, but it does lots of things better than any car i know of - thats what makes it unique - dont get me wrong, if the Cayman had a bigger back seat :)

I bought a 6mth old scirocco last year for quite a lot of dosh. I loved the front of the car and the seats but the more i looked at it it was nothing special. THEN they brought out a POLO that looked exactly like it, then the golf which looked like it (and even the new passat looks like it). But then when i saw that the mini cooper s was slightly quicker than it it had to go haha! It was nice but just not worth the money, in my opinion. Definitely A3, or S3 for me

it's a really tough one - between the S3 and the 'Rocco R on balance it'd have to be the S3. if it were a regular A3 vs. the 2.0 TSI 'Rocco i'd have a GTI

I do like the look of the C30's, but no idea what they drive like? The loony version they had on Top Gear last week was epic!

Have to agree one spoke :) That 5cyl lump sounds really nice as well with the Turbo crackle on the over run.. And they do a DSG box for those that want it. the R design with the twin exhaust looks nice as well.

Really, then how do you explain some of the technology in the mk5 made the 8P look poor incomparison.
