Hi All

Thought i'd share an experience i've just had with you all regarding Haldex 4wd.
I have a 2005 A3 Quattro s-line and the other day i had the abs warning light come on, this went off after recycling the ignition and stayed off for the remainder of the day, the following day, this happened again but did not go away!
and on my school run, it felt different and then spun it's front wheels in the wet!!, OH DEAR!!!, no 4wd.

A subsequent scan showed

Address 22: AWD Labels: 1K0-907-554.lbl
Part No: 1K0 907 554 A
Component: HALDEX 4Motion 0105
Coding: 0000001
Shop #: WSC 00000 000 00000
VCID: 2B5162E4F383
5 Faults Found:
00003 - Control Module
014 - Defective - Intermittent
02248 - Valve for Controlling Clutch Operating Angle (N373)
014 - Defective - Intermittent
00448 - Haldex Clutch Pump (V181)
014 - Defective - Intermittent
00003 - Control Module
014 - Defective
02248 - Valve for Controlling Clutch Operating Angle (N373)
014 - Defective

And also there was an advisory fail on the ABS saying check DTC's

Having done a lot of ringing about and speaking to both Audi and VW techies and also Awesome Gti store and a few others i found out that.

1. All gen2 controllers are interchangeable, ie petrol gen2 varients and diesel gen2 varients can be swapped beteen cars as these are all the same. one point to note though, always try to find a unit the same age or newer as some software is not backwards compatable!, ie newer software will work on older cars but not the other way around.

2. Complete Haldex rear diff set ups can be swapped between VW and Audi Diesels, ie A3 Quattro and mk5 Golf 4motion, but not between fuels, ie diesel will fit diesel as the haldex final drive matches the gearbox final drives.

3. Gen 4 units look identical to the gen2 albeit with the deletion of the filter plug/cap but these will not fit.

After trying to clear the faults down with no luck i found a good low mileage controller off ebay, it came complete with the 2 valves that the controller sits onto, this controller came of a 57 plate R32, it fitted perfectly and as soon as the ignition was turned on, the fault had gone, meaning no unnecessary coding!

Guide prices for rear diffs are about £200-£300, some companys quoted £700 so please shop about if you're going to change the whole unit.

Hope this helps anyone in a similar position
Graeme

What was the car and milage out of interest ?

car was a 2005 Audi A3 Quattro s-line with 70k on the clock and FASH up until the last service.

one point to note though, i did just have the Haldex oil service carried out by a local independant 7 weeks ago??.

It took them over an Hour??, me thinks they didnt really know what they were doing!!!, so i'll be doing the Haldex oil again myself in the next day or so, just to make sure it's at the right level!

Interesting because my car is booked in Tuesday at a BMW garage ( because i work next door) for a service and they said they don't have the special tools needed to do the Haldex oil change. ? but will do everything else ( at half the cost of Audi's) .lol

gen 2 haldex have a pressure sensor which is prone to fail - the same unit fails in the volvo xc90 as well - it usually reports as a haldex pump failure, or no oil pressure

the pressure sensor fails, the unit thinks there is no oil pressure and it only works in 2wd mode
usually a £60 oil pressure sensor change and an error reset is all it takes to get everything working again

Hmm, where is the sensor??, i dont recall seeing one, unless it's one of the metal valves/ items under the controller??

We could do with as much Haldex info putting on this thread to make it a sticky so all the good Gen 2 info is in one spot, would save on a lot of searching!!

aahh ok, it was one of the bits i changed out on mine!, came with the controller off ebay!!

Think i'll be doing my rear diff at the same time as the Haldex oil, certainly looks easy enough and it's fair to say, it's probably not been done!

So the haldex module/programming is the same for the A3, S3 and RS3, TT, TT-S and TT-RS? Assuming it is Gen IV.

I'm talking about Gen2 here, not gen 4, there may be differences with the gen4 stuff, i can only comment on what i've found out about which is purely gen2

With regards to gen 2 stuff, an R32 controller , valve and pressure switch will fit my A3 2lt TDi Quattro, i know this as thats what i'm running now, i also spoke with Awesome who told me that the gen 2 stuff is pretty much the same albeit with differences in software, but as long as you get a controller thats newer than what you have it'll be backwards compatable.

Hope this clears things up

Hi
saw your thread re your problems with Haldex unit, my esp light has just come on, and VAG Com shows the faults as J492 and N373 - same as yours, have tried to see if it was the clutch pedal sensor/switch but not.
Couple of questions to help please
I take it the pistons under the haldex controller are the clutch operating angle?
That the haldex controller is interchangeable if you go for a later model
The only thing I need answering as there is a complete diff unit on fleabay is you say a generation 2 will not be compatible with a generation 4?
Surely if I fit this as a whole unit (its off a diesel and I have a 2.0 tdi Quattro) then it should be Ok or not?
Could we have a chat, if you send me your number I'll give you a ring
Thanks a lot
Ian

Hi Graeme,

This is interesting info; thanks for sharing.

Is there anyway of telling if a car has a Gen 2 or Gen 4 Haldex fitted?

Just a note about doing the Haldex service yourself, Birmingham Audi charged me £77 all in, so worth doing!
