Hi guys, just working out the gremlins with my recently purchased 2007 S3 with 55k miles. I have experienced the clutch slipping on a number of occassions. It tends to be around 4500rpm and in gears 4,5,6. The problem i have is that i cant replicate it on demand, it tends to only do it around and above 70mph and i think the outside temp needs to be quite low(???). The bottom line is that i could not demo it to the dealer. I have however got some videos that clearly show it. What do you guys think? Does it sound like a common issue? Do you think the dealer will accept the video is a demo?

on a standard S3 its known to happen, on a mapped S3... happens to every single one!
the only problem is the clutch isnt a warranty item so the chances are they will so sorry nothing we can do and that £850 to fix... if you however can prove its the flywheel (warranty item) they will change the lot... but to prove this you will have to get the whole lot out....

I am working under the belief that as i bought the car from an audi dealer two weeks ago that i am protected from a worn or slipping clutch by the Audi 30 day guarentee. Therefore its in my interest to get them to acknowledge now rather than in a few weeks when it will become my problem.

i would seriously get on their case then!! there is no excuse for them to have sold a car with a slipping clutch!
the reason your finding the clutch is slipping in the hight gears (well apart form it well worn) is because in those gears thats when the engine is exerting the most amount of work on the drive train. the cold air just helps the engine produce more power as the intake temps are a lot colder so your getting better combustion, when we first had the cold snap thats when my clutch started to go and has got progressively worse
seriously tho, bug them, and get them to send a technician out with you for a test drive, get it on a duel carriage way first thing in the morning so its colder, put it in 6th and boot it, thats going to be the best way to try and induce some slipping

i think my clutch has started to slip... it all started when i was driving and booted it in 2nd and it felt like it wheelspan a couple times going up the revs.. at first i thought it could be down to it being wet + drain lids?? anyway yesterday on two occasions i went to pull away and the car wanted to stool.. again at first i thought "sort it out rye your driving pants!" but then last night i was leaving the gym someone flashed me to go went to pull out almost stooled then he nearly hit me started goin off bla bla... so now im at the point where im confident it the clutch.. so i done a couple tests.. 4th gear 3000rpm floor it and it doesnt slip straight away but more as the revs are going up it will blip a couple time...
so basically is this definately my clutch or maybe more misfire issues??
Oh and ive been struggling a bit more with gear selection too... (from standstill)

Leave it at the dealers overnight and get them to take it out in the morning.
The slipping is more prone when the car is cold, probably to do with the friction plate not being at temperature?
I had mine replaced an the last day of its warranty.
The clutches on these things are completely **** btw.

sounds like the clutch mate
a slip at higher rev's is more of a progressive thing where the revs will drop slightly, where as the misfire is more like a spit or splutter/stutter in the power delivery, if you can get a vid of it up

only thing is i got the evoms intake & revo software on.. although i do have the switch..
ill try and get a video today!
thing is guys cars booked into AMD tomorrow for Milltek Cat-back... am wondering whether i should get them to take off the Evoms off and use the switch to get setting back to stock then take the car to Audi for misfire & clutch issues? what you reckon guys?
If you can get the car as OEM as possible, the better. When mine went in for the misfire as there was no fault code for whatever reason they blamed the air intake... And then 2 weeks later a coilpack went and now I think another one is on it's way out as it's spitting again. Rubbish coilpacks! May just call out audi assist again as they were 100 times more helpful then the dealer.

yeh but shall i long off the milltek!? im gonna take my evoms off and the remap.. n get the car to the dealers! such a pain in the **** i was looking forward to having all the bits on
If you can delay the Milltek a week and get the car looked at this week I would, gives them less wriggle room to blame you for something. But also depends what your dealer is like, think mine is just a bit lazy.
Great news, I managed to call into the dealers when it was slipping today and demonstrate for them.

AUDI must know these clutches are a problem as they seem cool about replacing them anytime within the 3 yr warranty period, even though after 6 months they are not strictly covered.

Not very much to be honest. They seemed happy that it was now slipping and said it would probably get a new clutch under warrenty. Its booked in for next week.
I was chatting the master technician at an audi dealership yesterday and he said the b7 RS4 is the worst for faulty clutches. He said they fail frequently because, in his opinion, they are too small.
Come on guys be fair !!! There is nothing wrong with the clutches !! its the map that is doing them in and taking it off and returning the car under warranty is fraud. This sort of thing has become so except able in society today ....but all it does is push up the cost for everyone else. Sorry but thats the facts as i see it.

Yes i appreciate that but most of the people moaning about clutches above are running maps...and lets face it, its possible yours was too before you bought it but unlikely if its got to 55k

to be fair tho, i know a fair few people who drive other makes of cars with mapped ecu's and the clutches on them dont go like they do on S3's it was clear audi went for a massive cost saving exercise when they built these and the stock clutch is right on its limit with the power the car has, i could have tried to get mine changed under warranty by removing my map, but i want a reliable unit so dug deep and have paid for a sachs unit, once its bedded in hopefully many miles of happy clutch issue free driving
the life of any clutch is really down to how it is treated ! !
my car is running around 330 bhp and i still have a stock clutch . been mapped for about 20k at not a sign of any slips ,
or is it just luck of the draw.

Yeah but it shouldnt be though!
This is the problem.
Ive owned 25 cars over the years, some modded, some not, and only ever changed 3 clutches.
2 of the 3 were VAG 20T Manuals !!!
IMO these clutches are far too marginal based on the number of failed units on stock and Stage 1 tuned cars.

Sorry mate but since i have been posting here i have seen people who think its ok to steal parts off Audi loan cars......Defraud insurance companies as well as Audi warranties, and buy Pirate VCDS leads and a dozen other questionable activities....( pirate copies of Audi RNSE disc's

Seriously though, the things you mention above are more than questionable IMO so I do get your point, EXCEPT the clutch warranty issue.
AUDI sell you a premium product with a premium price tag and premium service rates, all the while that product has a significantly under engineered component critical to its drivetrain.
Thats not Ok in my book and AUDI know it because they change them without question, therefore I have no reservations in bending the rules around clutch warranties.
Your timing chain wasnt under warranty yet you (rightly) accepted goodwill contribution equal to about 5 clutches!!
Lets not forget that your car had a remap and aftermarket exhaust, Ok it had a small affect on power but if we are taking literal moral highground then does that not have a wiff of dis-honesty?
5K of goodwill on an out of warranty modified car! You are a bad lad!

A couple of points. I paid £4700 to wards the timing chain, normal cost would have been £3500. the rest was due to Audi being unable to diagnose the problem and completely stupid hourly rate charges of £150+/hour. Its unlikely the timing chain stretched due to the additional 10bhp the map added where as its highly likely the s3 clutches fail following a stage 1 map partly due to the map...

Like I said earlier, AUDI seem to change these without any hassle which IMO is acknowledgement of a substandard assembly.
