The two main ones in the UK:

Torres worth £50m?(He will be if he scores the winner against Liverpool on sunday )

Carroll worth £35m?(How is an injured player ever worth £35m?)

And why does all these types on transfers happen in the last minute?

I'm quite happy with Liverpool's January business.
They've basically swapped Torres for Suarez and Carroll + £7m.
I reckon that's a pretty good deal.
Torres has been crap and injured for the best part of two seasons now, looks like he's lost a yard of pace, is almost 27 so has 2 maybe 3 full seasons left before he's past it, Suarez is 24 and Carroll 22.

Torres of a few seasons ago was wonderful, I just don't think he can reproduce that form again for a few reasons..... I think his injuries have slowed him down and defenders have wised up to his play.

I think it's a silly move on his part (apart from the money aspect). He says he wants to win things but moving to Chelsea is a pretty risky move. They look to be on the decline, are aging, and have to do a fair bit of rebuilding themselves. I think Torres could find himself in a similar situation to the one that he left liverpool because of.
Chelsea would've still wanted him in the summer so it would've been smarter of him to wait until then so he could see how Liverpool do with their new signings.
But I guess the lure of a signing on fee equal to 5% of £50m was too strong to pass up.


I was reading an article this morning which was very interesting. It was explaining the truth behind how these deals happen.

With the Torres transfer as an example, it goes like this:

1) Chelsea contact Torres's agent and ask if he would like to play for them.
2) The agent asks Torres if he wants to play for Chelsea.
3) Torres says yes.
4) Agent goes back to Chelsea and tells them Torres wants to play for them.
5) Chelsea give a pretty accurate idea of what they will pay Torres in wages.
6) Only now Chelsea approach Liverpool and make an offer to buy Torres.
7) Liverpool turn down the offer.
8) The agent writes a transfer request, gets Torres to sign it and tells him to hand it to Liverpool.
9) If Liverpool then agree to sell the transfer goes ahead. If Liverpool still won't sell many players make threats i.e. "if you don't let me go to Chelsea I will get injured and not play for you".
10) Liverpool's hand is forced and they sell for the best price they can get from Chelsea.

So it seems like most transfers are a result of "tapping up".

Torres confirmed this by slipping up in his interview with ChelseaTV. He said.... "I'm glad the transfer has gone through, it's been 12 days of conversations etc".
It hasn't been 12 days since Chelsea put in their initial offer, so there must've been "conversations" between Torres and Chelsea before Liverpool and Chelsea's contact.

This basically echoes my sentiments as a Liverpool fan, he has only looked like a fraction of his old self on a couple of occasions in the last 18months, and should look at himself as a partial culprit in LFC's downfall, as if he was scoring more goals, we'd have been winning more games (spurs this season for example) and if suarez and carrol both get 16 goals each a season to match Torres' best (33 iirc)

Im not so gutted that it didnt happen, as we have plenty of midfielders. Quite like a good solid consistent centre half, or a striker that can score a few!

I understand that people can be annoyed with the emotion of it, but that harks back to what football used to be - 20+ years ago. It is a different game now. If you want that from your team, I would suggest you need to start looking in the lower leagues for someone to support.

As far as Carroll is concerned, would he be the difference between us winning something and not? Well definately not the league, and very unlikely a cup. In that case, what do a mid-table at best team need with a striker someone is willing to pay 35M for? And you struggle to get an answer that makes sense. And I'm happy we weren't able to get someone in, as it means that we won't pay silly money for them. We've got 30 points so far, in all likelihood we will stay up, and we can get someone who is 80%-90% as good as Carroll for probably less than 10M in the summer. We've sold an asset at the best possible price we were ever likely to get for them - that can't be bad business. And anyone who thinks football teams shouldn't be running themselves as a business (i.e. have some level of financial stability) is kidding themselves.

I agree.

£35m is A LOT of wonga... for any striker. Carroll, as good as he appears to be, is unproven really. A fair fee for him would've been £10-15m, and even that is inflated based on him being English.
Newcastle would've been silly to turn £35m down. As mentioned, they can buy some good players with that who will add more to the team than Carroll can alone.

But even though Liverpool have paid over the odds for him, I think this is a deal that works well for both clubs. The new owners of Liverpool calculate what a player is worth by more than what they can do on the pitch. To them the Carroll fee is probably viewed as a £10-15m player, plus that again on merchandising/revenue/etc, plus a good potential resale value in 5-6 years time when he'll be 27.

And as you say, it was Chelsea who gave Liverpool the silly money to spend on Carroll anyway! I hate chelsea, so will be glad to see their demise soon...hopefully.

Sort of glad Torres has moved I could see him going down the same lines as Owen, great for a match out for 2 ok for another out for 6 months ...... Don`t think Carrol was worth £35m but a 2 for 1 swap is ok

Torres' time in the prem is almost up. Once sussed out he's pretty ineffective. Not much strength, not great pace anymore, never been particularly tricky, and Chelsea will never find a formation that suits him unless they play him up front on his own.
If you look at Spain games Torres is poor when Villa is played up top with him. But the minute Villa is repositioned or taken off Torres comes alive.

He was woeful yesterday, before the match they were showing clips of him from a few years ago, but didn't have many to show of him recently.. He was good for us (LFC), but as aythree said, it looks like he's been sussed out. I'm sure he'll have better games for the rent boys, but i don't know how many. Ancelotti (sp?) should have left him on the bench and played the same team that scored 4 in midweek, but what do I know.
