Wheel Weight thread (Pics + info)

Hi I've noticed a few members asking for weights of alloys recently,
With this in mind when I was changing my wheels over today I thought I'd take 10 minutes to dig some wheels out of my garage and have a quick look.

The wheels I weighed all had the same tread depth of between 4-5mm, They were each weighed 3 times with an average weight taken.

These are the wheels I compared

First My 18 inch RSTT's (genuine Audi) with falken 452's

These weighed 24.5kg

Followed by My 17 inch Avus (genuine Audi) with Kleber Hydraxer's

These weighed 21.6kg

Then my 18 inch BBS rs2 with Falken 452's

These weighed 22.3kg

Also I weighed my dads 18 inch S-Line Wheels (genuine Audi) with Falken 912's

These weighed 24.4kg


I guess the idea of this thread is for a bit of info and for others to add any findings they have with other wheels or reps :thumbsup:

Good info there mate, the lardy Rstt's seem suited for the lardy S3

I'd of guessed at the BBS being the lightest and the S-lines being the heaviest.. Lol

I'd of guessed at the BBS being the lightest and the S-lines being the heaviest.. Lol

Thats what I thought too mate, I'm happy that the BBS's were over 2kg's lighter per wheel over the Rstt's though

Just weighed my 19" BBS's with tyres, 26.3kg. The only way to get a accurate weight is to weigh every wheel/tyre on the same set of scales.

Matt, your weights of the 4 wheels above is a great comparison

Your right mate although I do have a 56lb weight in the garage that weighs 56lb on my scales

i personally would of said the ronal avus alloys were the lightest, and would of been right. Not sure how fair the test is as surely there can be a difference between tyres weights through different brands, apparently toyos and pirellis are amongst the lightest.

the difference between my old rstt reps and avus wheels felt quite a bit though.

This is brilliant, just what I wA after thanks.
I too weighed my standard avus at 21kg.
I have rs4 reps that weigh 13.8 without tires, so now I'm wondering how much a tire weighs?
I do ideally wana go lighter so if the rs4's arnt I'l get rid after a while.
I'm surprised the bbs weren't lighter than the standard ones though, even being a size bigger.

Yeah your right pal the bbs and the rstt's have exact same tread and tyre so that is a fairly accurate comparison

Great post, although I thought the rs2's were going to be the heaviest having a set myself, they weight a TON! But obviously less than rstt's lol

Great info here, but as stated above - take into consideration that different tyre manufactures have different weights for the same size tyre.

I have seen 3kg differences between 225/40/18 Eagle F1 Assy and the same sized cheapo 'ditch finders'.
Perhaps it would be better to have the bare wheel weights for better comparison?

Are you saying the 8.5" wide RC's are lighter?

Yup, I had already bought a single wheel (BBS's RC, VW version) - I wanted a set of 5 and most are sold in sets of 4 so I figured that when I got a set of 4, I would have the full set that I wanted and be able to choose which 4 are used and which one would be spare.

I then came across a full set wheel of 5 RC's in the non-VW variety - weighed them both (without tyres) and found a 900g difference. I ended up selling the single VW RC alloys to a guy off UKMKIV's who couldn't believe the weight difference until I weighed them in front of him.

The difference is apparently in the materials used (or so I was told by the Interwebz!). The VW RC's are 7.5J, the BBS ones are 8J, one is marked BBS RC 336, the other marked BBS RC 330.

I suppose it makes sense for VW who would have purchased many thousands of RC alloys from BBS for their Anniversary model to keep their costs down and buy something that is of good quality - not necessarilly the best that was available at the time due to the cost. Whether 900g would make a noticeable difference to the average driver like me is debateable though.

What I do know is they feel nicer to drive on than the 17" Dotz Mugello's I had - they weighed 22Kg's per corner when fitted with 225/45/17 F1 Assy's.

Cheers for this info Imteyaz, and I meant the 8" versions yes, I have a set on my S3, it does seem to be more responsive to steering inputs over my 19" Porsche reps which must weight around 25kg's each!
