Evening Lads - I get all the good ones

Driving home this evening and I notice a drop in performance accompanied by a louder turbo spooling noise and no noise from the dv, I am currently putting the money to the side for the full Vagcom so I am unable to check for fault codes, but I imagine it is just a boost leak. However the noise evolved so that it now makes a noise like a whoopiee cushion as well, I have attempted to capture this in the following video.

In the cabin the noise sounds quite high up and is quite loud, I was thinking the red pipe from the charge pipe to the turbo but after a quick check now - in the dark and while the engine is v hot - I can't see anything. Anyone heard this noise before and reckon they know what it is?

Cheers,

Yep! I was getting a faint whiff of a oily burning smell, hopefully it'll be obvious tomorrow and wont require a trip over to Forge lol.

Cheers Dave

Will do, I'm going to try and spend and hour looking around now.

The bottom of the red charge pipe has come out of the jubilee clip and a 5mm bit of the pipe has been ripped off around the bottom of the pipe so I'm going to try and just fix it back in.

****. That happened to me actually, twice on two different hoses.

Short term fix, bodge it. Long term fix, buy the Forge silicone one.

F me that was a pain. I got it out and this is what has happened

As you all say a trip to Forge is probably necassary as it'll keep coming off.

Thats what happened to mine. I bought a blue 90 degrees hose from ebay for about £18 IIRC and been fine ever since.

Cheers for the heads up Nathan, I'd rather get it sorted tonight though and Forge just offered it to me at £50 for cash, woop!

I mustn't buy anything else, I musn't buy anything else, I mustn't buy anything else, I musn't buy anything else.

The hose off the turbo isn't quite 90 degrees plus the Forge item is made from flourosilicone and nomex to withstand the heat from the rather close exhaust manifold and oil from the journal bearing turbo... normal silicon will work of course but wouldn't hazard a guess on longevity...

A replacement OEM is near double the Forge price anyway...

This is what I bought. Had to cut it down a bit but that took like 5 min and fits perfectly fine and you can have different colours. If anyone does buy one of these I would say to go for a slightly smaller diameters than what's in the link below to get a snug/tight fit.

If anyone knows the exact sizes of the charge pipe and compressor outlet, you would know the exact size needed.

76mm > 63mm Silicone 90 Degree Reducer Hose Step Blue on eBay (end time 02-Feb-11 10:33:28 GMT)

The actual outlets are at 90 degrees to each other but the bend isnt 90 degrees no. Its fits perfectly fine and I dont have the heat sheild around it so will just have to see how long it last but its 4ply if I remember.

Say I can withstand temps from -60 to 180 degrees

Dane - would you be able to measure the diameters of both ends of the pipe whilst you have it off the car?

Yeah man, I will do, it'll be later on though

good work finding the solution, must have sh&%t your self when you first heard it

Judging by the fact my heatwrap was smoking when I came off the ring I would go with the forge one!
One of my turbo flange bolts was loose like but still, HOT HOT

All sorted now, the forge ones on. it's had several trips up and down several dual carriageways getting hot under heavy load in 6th and hard acceleration. Stopping so it can cool down for and hour and then the same again and every things seems ok.

Word to the wise, take the strut brace and charge pipe off before doing this - cheers Welly.

The internal diameter of the smaller end is 53mm and the larger end is 67mm obviously this is subject to a little bit of error.

The worst part is doing up the jubilee clips tight enough so they don't pop off under boost but not so tight they do the click of death. Lol

Glad your sorted Dane, keep checking the clamps for the first week or so, i have tightened them up numerous times and at last they have gone up tight.

cant understand why you would want to take the charge pipe off though....

Cheers man, that was my plan I just couldn't be bothered tonight lol.

I tried for an hour and a half / 2 hours to fit the thing with the charge pipe in place and couldn't do it. I rang Welly, he suggested moving the charge pipe and half an hour later I was finished. Theres so little room to work with the charge pipe in place, im sure it could be done but taking the charge pipe off was a lot easier.

Im hearing a totally diff noise to the one in the video. Im holding boost at1.4 bar. If i floor it boost is there but is lacking performance. If i feather in the throttle performance seems to improve. Cant find any sPlits or rips in any pipes anywhere no engine code or lights have come up so im really confused ere :(

s3toe, if you can come to the meet on this Sunday at Krispy Kream near Trafford Centre, i'll gladly have a look for you. Scan it with vag com too to see if you have any fault codes stored
