hi all thinking of buying an 2005 audi a4 avant 3.0 tdi v6 quattro with a multitronic gearbox read some nasty reviews on the gearbox are they realy that bad did they improove them on the b7 model? (i think its a multitronic just an auto hasnt got the paddles on steering wheel i dont think) done 60k ish full audi history going to test drive it in next few days anything i need to look out for when on test drive?

Don't buy,poor gearbox and like a grenade with the pin out. Just a question of time as to when it will break.
Forget about clutch pack upgrades and oil changes every forty thousand miles, buy this gearbox at your peril.

3.0tdi quattro will have a Tiptronic gearbox.

Multitronic = 2wd drive
Tiptronic = 4wd

Tiptronic's are made by ZF gearbox and much stonger and reliable than mulitronics.

You will be very happy with 3.0tdi!!

My old 1.9tdi had a multitronic - it started to fail at 80k so I part ex'd the car with a Audi dealer.

real worried about mate only thing putting me off a bit realy i know engines are good i thought it would be a bit stronger due to torque and quattro system?

When they start to go wrong they cost a fortune to repair (on the 1.9tdi's) Not sure if the newer mulitronics are better.

I would not worry, gearbox's are bullet proof and if they do go wrong there are alot of specialist who cater for the ZF gearbox. Also these are used by BMW, etc.

My mate has a 3.0tdi Q Remapped - he loves it.

Might be worth having the transmission oil changed, i'm going to have mine done here -

But you've nothing to worry about. Like the man said, if it's a quattro, it doesn't have a multitronic gearbox.

how do you find yours mate is it the 204 or 233 bhp?

It's a 233 (& that's PS, which works out at 230bhp). It's a great car; smooth, effortless, and so easy to drive very quickly indeed. I cannot tell you how much I love it.

But it is not remotely sporty. You have to remember that all A4s have most of their weight not just over, but actually in front of, the front axle. In the case of the 3.0TDi, the engine is enormously heavy, so the understeer is pretty overwhelming. They also have rather mushy and uncommunicative steering.

You can reduce the understeer a little by going for an S-Line over an SE, but only at the expense of what, to me at least, is a ruinously uncomfortable ride. And it still isn't particularly sporty - but then if you want sporty, don't start here.

A better compromise, in my view, is to stick with the SE, but then fit an RS4 anti-roll bar. By doing that, you can achieve virtually the same reduction in understeer that you get in an S-Line, but without damaging the ride comfort.
