as above chaps, whilst searching for a car, i might aswell keep my ear to the ground for a spare set of wheels - off to the Alps in December time and gonna need some wheels with winter tyres so i dont fall foul of the German/Austrian police..... obviously dont want to spend a fortune and understand that they will look gash :)

Not all do - my mate sold his S3 as a change over for a A3 diesel and wanted to keep his 19's but the standard 17" wouldn't fit the S3.....due to calipers.

no offence but i'm pretty sure that's garbage.

the S3 shares brakes with the 3.2, which was available from the factory with 17s - and it obviously had no issues. no OEM 8P 17" wheel should conflict with the S3 set up

Definitely fit, I've had 4 different sets of winter wheels in 17's fit on my 2 a3's with upgraded S3 brakes

They sure do Tim. I looked into it for the same reason as you.

thanks chaps....

Nick did you manage to get any in the end? haven't started researching yet but a lot of the winter tyre brands are alien to me
and seem pretty expensive even in 17" guise - looking at £600 for a set of 17" unknowns

I didn't bother in the end for 2 reasons, 1) I'm not likely to be driving or even owning the car for much longer and 2) I found out my boss has some Thule K-Summit snow chain devices which will fit the car so i'm borrowing them instead.

I'm driving down on the 4th Feb taking the S3 for it's last long distance road trip mainly because it's just been serviced. Hopefully a trip through the snowy Alps will be a worthy farewell.

The Hancook winter tyres are pretty good for the money, and if I were going to put them on I would be looking for a cheap set of 17" wheels to keep the costs down.

haha its gotta be fun, thats why i need to do it.....that said it cant be that much longer to drive than to fly when you take into account your time waiting around...plus Ausstrian transfers are notoriously 2-3 hours from the airport.

You do know that it's illegal over there now not to have winter tyres in addition to chains? Germany and Austria, winter tyres or tyres showing the symbols M+S (mud and snow) ...if you get stuck the police can fine you on the spot 20 euros iirc, 40 if your holding traffic up and make you stop your journey until you get some fitted.....gather you've done ya research

just noticed in your sig too the A5? im off to look at a couple of S3's on Sunday, noticed one of the garages has a nice 3.0tdi A5 in and hoping to take one out, quattro of course...what were your thoughts overall?

woah!!! A5 3.0 tdi has 255/35/19 tyres!! Rosso's on camskill are £265 a pop!! :eek:0

Well I'm going to France, it's ok, winter tyres aren't obligatory there (snow chains are though). I'm attending a stag do believe it or not, and the rest of the lads are flying, they are leaving their front doors same time as me in the morning, so a top gear race is on!! i'll be well into France before they even take off, but they'll soon catch up, probably hit Geneva just as they are picking up the transfer bus at the airport...could be close!

My A5 was a poor-mans spec 1.8T FWD, a bit slow and f**king awful in the snow last winter with the 19" wheels. The engine was gutless, but they stopped putting that engine in the A5 fairly early on. Aside from the lack of power it was a really nice car to drive, much more comfortable than the S3 and feels more modern and grown-up, excellent seats, feels like a small car inside so a nice cozy coupe feel. My boss has the A5 3.0TDi and his is S-Line and Quattro too, it's surprisingly quick! They look great in Phantom Black....

yeah i was looking, the 0-60 is around 5.9-6.1...i know thats only a guide but 500nm of torque!! 40mpg on the mways apparently, the tyre costs are expensive but them i suppose only another £400 per 12k miles (tyre change territory).....you'd save more than that in fuel - i l ike the fact that its a next gen Audi - might take that one out still

I'd assume the depreciation would be bigger though given the size of the car, thats one of my biggest fears, @ 58 plate the S3's seem to hold very well - bolstered by the 8L prices no doubt

Just been looking too, white sportback with open sky, bit cliche but i think it still looks awesome....might end up buying tomorrow if i can get a good plice!!

I think Revo and/or AmD are developing software for the 3.0TDi at the moment, so I expect there could be some further gains available soon if thats your poison!

it's not ideal, thats the 'put off'.... i have a pyrenean and a retriever, and so they would be isolated to travelling in the A3 which seems to do well with the seats down.

Just thinking they look really nice and comfy, with pace.... im 31 so not ready to get the slippers out yet :) classy looking car though

Yeah not ideal for dogs to be honest, the seats go down but i still struggled to get my bikes in, but plenty of room for flat pack stuff though.

It's a difficult choice I reckon, let me know what you think of it after a test drive.

will do..... getting my mate to HPI one tomorrow, 57 plate to get an idea of residuals via CAP and Glasses, they have got to be higher than the S3 without doubt, question is how much....can see that being the biggest buffer now, i need to be able to get the car gone if the house prices take a turn for the better....so i can gain on the upturn before it lifts off again (whenever that will be)

*edit that..... also if i can get my diving wet box in the boot :(

Sorry to resurrect a few week old thread.... what size tyres would be best for 17's on an S3.....

actually hoping to be able to fit 225/50/17's as the wheel will effectively be the same size as what i already have....therefore any snow chains will fit both my 17's and 18's......

Should be ok with these given the same rolling tyre tread......

Standard 17s come with 225/45R17. If 50s give you the same rolling radius then I'd go for those

yarp i ran the two sizes through a snow chain table last night and found that the 50's are exactly the same as the 40's that are on now....gawd my cars gonna look **** with 17" on :)
