Help with armrest fitting

Just waiting for my armrest off 2007 a3 to arrive,as its a used one it wont come with a template so i could do with some information on how to fit it to my sportback.

i fit a leather armrest to mine you can pull the ashtray out and the little box just below inside you will see at the bottom a metal piece with a hole in where the armrest goes ...... but you cant get to it to line it up that's because you have to cut a hole in the centre console i wish i had photoshop i could do you a diagram... but where you took the ashtray out the top of the console do not cut into it there you have to go about 15 mm forward and cut a strip out of the top of the console . the armrest goes through the hole if you look at the picture added there's the hole on top a center meter forward do you see....
i used a drill to make a big hole then i saw it,,, it was a bit shoddy but the trim on the bottom of the armrest covers it just don't cut from the back cos you will have a gap when you fit. once you put the armrest in to the hole i put 2 fingers in and work a bolt on then just tighten up a little movement at a time cos that all it will let you do with a spanner,,,,, then put back the ashtray and compartment below and done...... hope this helps
the yellow arrow is the hole you need to cut the red arrow points to the hole that the bolt goes through.... i just got a nut and bolt from b&q a short bolt about inch and half put it down though the armrest and with 2 fingers got the bolt on

you can see the hole cant you its as good as a tempate lol just cut the hole 2 cm in instead of one all the way round it would probly go in anymore off you can work out if you look at the hole its about 13mm 14 mm all round just do it 20 mm from the edge all the way round then you can adjust the front of the hole till you get the armrest flush then bolt on from underneith id say the hardest part is getting the damn bolt on lol but i managed to do mine with out a template good look pal

Thanks for the help guys. I drilled a hole in center then used a saw and filed it off nice smooth cut out fitted armrest in perfectly nut and bolt i found very easy...used a socket set.
Oh i bought a leather armrest off e-bay on tuesday i got the lady to end it early £60 delivered off 2008 !

good man glad to help,,,,, you could of took the console out as said in other threads but this way is much easyer ,,,good price on the armrest to i paid 90 for mine

I've started to put my new arm rest in the car but have come acrross something strange...where the bolt goes into the piece of aluminiun there is a strange hex bolt that won't budge with what seems to be a thread inside with the thread of a bolt already in there...

Has anybody come across anything similar?

Are you talking about where the bolt goes into the car's fixing bracket, or the armrest's fixing bracket?

It's through the cars fixing bracket...

The "piece of aluminium" that the bolt goes into doesn't have a thread from factory so what you are seeing is the small threaded nut that fits into the hole so you screw your bolt into it.

Has your car ever had an armrest fitted to it in the past?
Sounds like there could've already been a bolt screwed in, and it has been cut to remove what ever it was fixing in place, rather than being unscrewed.

Not sure how easy it is to pop out the nut, but if you can't get the bolt thread out then that sounds like it's your only option.

OR.... can't you just put use the bolt thread that is already there to fix your armrest in place.... by guiding the thread through your armrest's fixing bracket and then using a nut to fix it in place??

Really strange. No armrest in the car as far as I know...I had to cut a hole in the center console so unless it was a mistake at the factory or someone has removed the armrest and replaced the center concole then I'm baffled!

Just drilled it out and will stick a nut and bolt on it...problem solved!

Do a search mate - loads of threads on here about the subject.

I didn't use a template because the surround on the armrest is much larger than the hole you have to cut so it was obvious where to cut the hole.
