Hello All .Driving Audi A4 3.0 sport quattro 2001 and planning to instal hid kit phillips one. the main question is
does my car got can bus or k line wiring (system) please for help ,how to recognize them??
And if i have can-bus in whitch models they start installing it im asking about years .
Thank you very much for any help.

Hi, can't really answer your question but, did you know from Jan 1st 2012 hid kits are gonna be an MOT failure from what i gather, just thought i'd mention

Hi
All hid retro fit systems are going to fail an MOT from 31st DEC 2011 at the latest
Unless they meet type approval which is
1. proper hid light unit specifically designed for gas discharge lighting
2. Self leveling headlight system
3. headlamp washers

You will also fail with a remap they say but this will only be for the tuning box people
as an ecu remap is basically undetectable
Air bag faults so lights on or not working in accordance with manufacturer
and there is going to be a wiring loom inspection so everything is safe and secure basically
From what ive read this also now means insecure batteries are going to be a fail as at the moment the word Battery isnt in the testers manual so has never been a fail.

Its all here if anyone wants a read
does get a bit boring thou

The benefit of it a tuning box is it can be easily removed and replaced at a later date if needs be! I've not read the link, but do they say why they're making them a fail? Surely as long as the emissions are within limit thats all that matters?

It will be interesting to see how far they will take the HID thing, in mine the ballasts will be an instant giveaway, but if they're installed under the light will they go to the bother of taking the back of the light unit. The 6000k colour is a bit of a giveaway, but the lower K bulbs colour can be matched by xenon look halogen bulbs these days.

To be honest i'm glad they are doing this, there's too many chavs driving around with very bright hids that are way out of adjustment blinding oncoming traffic. God i must be getting old sound like my father now :)

It says any modification to the engine ecu ,
now this in my eyes leaves a very open criteria for failing
as i said you cant see the remap and testing stations will not have anyway of searching ecus for maps
the box on the other hand is quite often in a place you can see
also this has nothing todo with emmisions passing or failing they can still pass and performance alterations will be a fail
how this is all going to be worded is in the link if thats the final draft of the testers manual that we will get time will tell
again with the Hid s if they explain under methods of inspection what to look out for when a Discharge light fires up for example there will be nothing we can do only not have them in for test
again all dependes on the final wording .

at the moment they cant remove anything from the car to check stuff, ie brake pads, they cant remove the wheel trim/wheel but if they can see through the wheel (ie alloy wheel) and see that the brake pads are below 1mm then i think they can fail it

Correct but in this case most pads can be seen from underneath
but you are right testers are not allowed to remove fixed items from vehicles.

I've no doubt these items are easy enough to spot by a tester, I can understand why HID's are being regulated as poorly fitted one's in inappropriate headlights are dangerous. I also think anything above 6000k should be banned as they're too blue, in my opinion anyway.

I just don't see the problem with a remap/tuning box. If thats true then thats a lot of business under threat.

Its 100% true
and i couldnt agree more i dont see why the marginal increase in power or any power increase should have anything todo with road safety as an MOT issue ,
They could argue your brakes are not upto it but then if you have a set of 321mm brakes on as i do whats the issue there then .

Standard A4 headlights are far more dangerous than HID'd ones!

with regards the ecu:

6.1.9. Engine performance
Visual inspection
(a) Control unit illegal modified (b) illegal engine modification

but is it illegal to remap a car?

im with you there its a grey area i think it will be down to mot testers opinion as illigal to me is load exhust systems that can have asbos put on them can you believe or engines with wrong numbers on not matching v.5 it all depeneds but like has being said surley it cannot be illegal to tune? next thing you know well have to apply for a tuning permision slip or som sort of bo£$%cks like they do planning for building work what is the planet coming to i agree with alot of things but this is abit daft besides the people they trying to get at i.e the chavy idiots dont even have the funds to tune they opt for go faster stripes now thats a defo illigal mod call in the fasion police o and another thing ive always decared any mods to insurence making them legal in my book just my little rant there guys lol

It wording they use ,as you can see its a visual inspection , you cant see remaps.

4.1.4. Compliance with requirements ( a ).
Visual inspection and by operation.
(a) Lamp, emitted colour, position or intensity not in accordance with the requirements ( a ). (b) Products on lens or light source which obviously reduce light intensity or change emitted colour. (c) Light source and lamp not compatible

The piece that makes it a fail so far
its (c) Light source and lamp not compatible

Its also a visual inspection and to be judged by operation
which is where the problem will arrive as halogen lighting comes on totally different to HID lighting as we all know .

light source and lamp not compatible, now that could be seen as say the wrong bulb ie to higher wattage perhaps?

again it is a grey area
Visual inspection and by operation ,
theres no grey area there as i explained already .

it will never come through, HIDs maybe ecu tuning never.

Spoke to my respected tuning guy, ecu tuning he is very adamant wont happen, his comments to be exact

"There is absolutely no way that they can read every car to ascertain whether the ECU is stock or not as many Fords, Vauxhalls, Porsches etc etc cannot be read without taking the ECU out and using a BDM machine. I can't see VOSA investing in such equipment as the manufacturer will not make the information public knowledge."

Personally I have to agree, will make mots longer which may close allot down unless they make them more expensive, which will then alienate us drivers even more.

Its coming in thats a fact
but as i already said myself
theres no way they will read or find remapped ECUs
tuning boxes yes unless well hidden
HIDs retro fit are an easy spot so will be failed
On a personal level im still of the opinion that if retro fit hids are in projector light units and set up with in aim limits there should be no issue ,
but there you go .

It won't come in, ECU tuning has nothing illegal on it. If you get a tuning box and plug it in, declare to insurance then there is nothing wrong with that. you are not harming anyone at all, it has no place being on the MOT.

****** Hell its coming in its already been passed as an EU directive
if you had bothered reading the link or my posts,
i also said it will not be traceable as a map in my opinion
only as an aditional box thats visible
if your not happy with MOT regulations Dont run a car
and lots of things have no place being in an MOT as with so many things in life but tuff
your also taking the word illegal as a law statement its not with an MOT its about rules
the word illegal has more than one meaning
Example
1. Prohibited by law.
2. Prohibited by official rules

in relation to MOTs it has in this case nothing to do with the law its about rules
theres nothing Me You or Anyone else can do about it is there?
well there is you can run around without a test but that would be illegal law wise .

Looks like we're all gonna have to become a bit handy at removing and refitting HID kits ;)

Personally mate
and i dont want to get flamed for this
but all you have to do is swap out the bulb and plug the halogen back in for test
theres nothing saying your not allowed to fit unused ballasts under your bonnet .
