Hi all I am having problems with the motor not returning very good mpg
What should I be looking at for around town and then on a run
From experience anybody

Also I've decated it I'm maybe thinking this could have something to do with the poor fuel consumption

And finally it's an auto tip 5 speed (not cvt) will I have problems with the box if I get it remapped I was told by a mate at Fontain that the gearbox ecu will have to be altered

Has anyone come across this before
oh and the dynamic timing has been checked and it was spot on

I've heard that 35 to 40mpg is about right for these cars. If you are just going around town i would expect 35 max.

What are you actually getting??
 
manual / auto?

A Manual should be getting roughly
30mpg in short-trip, traffic (proper bumper-to-bumper crawl),
45mpg+ at 55mph in 6th,
40mpg for a sustained 70mph motorway cruise.

I tend to dip to around 33-35mpg with a fair bit of spirited accelerating out of corners / roundabouts and 90mph(ish) blasts on the motorway, 36-39mpg if it's mostly open A road / motorway cruising - most people seem to have a long-term average of around 35-36mpg.

Auto's are a fair bit less efficient, I think you can knock anything up to 10% off those numbers, but wait for an auto-owner to confirm.
 
I'd agree, I felt mine too was pretty poor too but from what I gather, it's what can be expected from a 2.5TDi.

If she's been driving it (school run, shops, hairdresser) then it'll usually be sat around 25mpg average and the best I've achieved is over a 100 miles cross country trip (Motorway, A rod and short urban) and it returned around 42mpg average which I suppose isn't too bad for the car and given it was fully loaded. Like any car, it's the short stop start driving that just consumes fuel at a scary rate of knots. Plus the fact £20 of diesel doesn't last anytime at all at today's prices.

Ahhh, I rememeber when I were a lad...
 
i worked out on my manual the best full tank figure with driving carefully was 32mpg
 
Yeah I'm getting like 27-30 on a little motorway journey keeping it under 80 which is about right on the auto it delivers the best consumption at this speed thanks everyone for your input if it doesn't do better than that I may aswell get an s4 haha I've just sold my Nissan 200sx s14a with 300 bhp and that wasnt that much worst than this haha never mind

Funnily enough, there was an 04 (I think) S4 popped up in a dealer down here recently, must admit I did go off and do the sums given how crap the 2.5TDi's urban economy is. I tried to justify it but arguing the point that diesel was now dearer than petrol. That fell upon deaf ears.

Slightly off topic... are you from Fife, Dunfermline area perhaps... your user name seems very familiar, did you previously own a Golf?
 
Davie - Yes, I'm from Kirkcaldy, used to stay in Rosyth a few years back. You could say i previously owned a Golf, more like about 40 odd ;)

you on local forums? or you use to stay up this way?

How "little" is this motorway journey, and how soon after you start from cold do you join the motorway? Don't forget that diesels only start to return decent fuel consumption once they are full warmed up.

I've got a 3.0Tdi V6 Quattro A4 with an auto box. On a long motorway journey crusing at around 75mph, it'll easily do 45mpg. But on my ten mile journey straight up a dual carriageway (speed limit 50mph all the way) to work in the morning, it only full warms up just before I get there, and the average mpg for that journey is about 33mpg.

yep - I was trying to check that as it didn't make sense.... they never did the 2.5TDI QUATTRO in a CVT multitronic - the multitronic clutch couldn't handle the torque of the 2.5TDI going into a quattro drivetrain... hence why they only did them in FWD.

If it's really a quattro, then it's a regular auto.
 
Yeah that's right it's a quattro defo I was told they did 2 boxes in them only told tho
And yeah the car is warm before I hit the motorway but it is a heavy car I'm gonna empty the tank then drive it nicely and see what that returns
I don't wanna get rid of it I love driving it and im going to get it remapped tomorrow so fingers crossed it will start behaving :icon_thumright:

back to the original thread........ heres one for ya...I got a 2003 2.5 tdi 6 speed manual convertible with 70k miles. I get an avarage 31-36mpg commuting 8 miles to work through traffic in town each day, (depending how heavy my right foot is of course)
I have 4 garages local to me. (Shell,Total,Asda & Morrisons) I find I get nearer 36mpg when i fill up at Morrisons and 33mpg when I fill up at Total & Asda and 31mpg at Shell !!!!

Motorway driving - about 42 mpg at a steady 70mph or 38-40mpg if i go quicker, but i dont do that of course :yes:

Hhhmmmmm it's making me think more and more there's something wrong with it I've had it all looked at and plugged in on dealer computer and still nothing wrong I'm gonna have a look see what it does on a long run

Yeah I think so but it should be a little better oh sod it it's not the end of the world is it I will either keep it and run it gently or sell it and buy an s4 haha either way gonna stay with audi
 
WE have both amanual and triptronic Quattros with tuning boxes.I drive the manual and stillget about 33mpg mainly short urban journeys and more in summer and a lot higher on long trips where well over 40 is poss with care and luck.The auto is my sons and he finds 25 in motorway commuter traffic too low and wants to get the pump timing checked again it will return much higher on an open run and is more relaxing to drive but I think the higher revving uses the fuel in traffic and I always waiting for it to change up like I can in the manual.I also think the tuning box in mine is more economical.
 
Wicked mate that's good to no I'm getting it remapped on Friday so will be able to tell more then I just haven't had chance to get it on a long journey yet only bin on the road for a week now so still finding out the best cruising speed and so on

Now here's a question do you think me taking the cat off will have done anything to the fuel consumption ????
 
I get around 400 miles to the tank (mainly around town driving) a long trip on the motorway makes a massive improvement!!
 
Cant see why the cat would make any diff nor would a remap help mpg whereas i am sure the tuning box did and also claims to give more power although the 180 is enough for me.A good one is not cheap but I was lucky on ebay at £100 which is easily recouped at todays prices
 
Well a remap is suppose to give better economy as a mate who is a superchips agent has said it will give more bhp torque and a little better on mpg

I was just asking about the cat to see if it may make a difference or not that's all!
 
....I told you....buy your fuel from Morrisons, I filled up this morning and i'm back up to 36mpg from 32mpg!!!

Shell - 31mpg
Asda - 33mpg
Total - 32mpg
Morrisons - 36mpg
.....only a small differance but its there!.....I need to get out more! lol.
 
Haha I'm gonna try it s31lew haha and yes mate you need to get out more hahaha but I think I'll have to try morrissons the nearest morrisons petrol station to me is 30 miles away tho hahaha but would be worth the drive to see what I get when I'm driving home hahaha
 
have heard bad things about fuel from morrisons although I suspect there isn't much difference between any of them, not to make that sort of difference to the mpg
 
Cant see why supermarket fuel would be better than that from the refiners who supply the wholesale market as well as their own outlets.It may be cheaper but it would be amiracle if it performed any better.I will stick to Shell but I think they are pushing it to price V Power 10p extra
 
morrissons (and any supermarket) will vary depending on which suppliers they use and that will probably vary from week to week, not just supermarket to supermarket.

the remap will give you higher torque across the range, especially at lower revs - so even if it's only 10% or so for peak bhp, it will make the car feel a lot nippier because it'll probably have significantly more area under the torque curve: the downside is it makes it easier for you to stuff the clutch with aggressive driving.... but it does mean that you get to hang onto much higher gears at any given speed, which means you are likely to return a few MPG more.
 
i get 450 miles out of a tank on my 7 mile trip to work and back never had it on a run yet but reckon thats not bad as i was only getting 500 out of my 1.9 on the same journey! 1.9 is fantastic on a run tho!
 
Yeah I think I may have been a bit premature on this as now I've bin driving it unlike a racing car it's doing alot better old habits die hard haha but I did just a 15 mile journey tonight and it was returning 36 mpg so I'm won over now it's fine and dandy haha and it's getting the remap in the morning oh and it's auto (booooo) but should be a bit better I think.

audi upgrades
manually push it into higher gears when you're cruising along gently in traffic: with the extra torque any gentle accelleration shouldn't require a gear change that the auto box might think it needs.... key to driving the TDI is ride the torque rather than to change down and rev the nuts off it.

I normally get the fuel warning light just under 400miles (I've done >450miles a few times before "the light", but that's pure motorway runs): but remember the quattro's have a smaller tank, so it's only worth comparing "miles to fuel warning light" on the 180TDI with 1.9's and others if the other cars are also quattro... it's <10% extra in the non-quattro tanks (65 litres vs 70 litres??) but worth bearing in mind.

You might get slightly more mpg with the remap if you drive the same, however with a remap you are more likely to drive it harder and therefore loose mpg!
 
Yeah no good putting 20 quid in it anyway you feel depressed wen You look at the gauge and think a few years ago that would be so much more peskin govornment money grabbing twats but yeah I understand the computer will read from a full tank more accurately I've set the trip computer to zero now gonna see how much I actually get instead of what the computer says

i earlier worked out what my last £30 returned over 200miles (empty - fill up - empty), can't remember exact numbers as receipt is still in the car but roughly...

£30 = 23lts

23 / 4.55 = 5.05gallons

200mls / 5.5 = 39.6mpg

best i've had i'm pretty sure, last check was 32. must be something to do with being too scared to drive fast since lowering the car ;)
 
I am happy to get 30 Mpg round town with me a4 as i'm running 18" alloys and i dont drive with light boots either ! On motorway the figures are higher but i would like anyone with a big v6 turbo petrol and all wheel drive to chalenge that without driving like a noon ! Remember there are 6 hungry pistons there to feed and hauling the best part of 1.5 tonnes does not help with fuel consumption !
 
Haha yet I'll drink to that haha I think we r the ones with the better wallets/brains diesel is the new petrol haha long live the oil burners haha
 
Yesterday i changed front brakes on a chap's merc c220 petrol. I took it for a drive (with him inside !) just to make shure everything is ok. I was very disapointed with the performance especially as i was revving the nuts out of the engine just to get it going. I then took it for a ride in me old diesel and he could not believe mine shifted like that... He's selling next week- gues what he's gonna buy ? A 4 tdi quattro sport !!!
