Does it really make much difference to the mpg? I have just checked my tyres which should be 30 at the front and 29 at the back - they came up with 33 at the front and 30 at the back so were a bit out. Just wondering if it will actually make any difference?

having your tyres inflated higher than they should be will probably improve your fuel economy, but will also probably increase your tyre wear.
having them underinflated definitely made a difference to my fuel economy. now that i'm all up to code i'm probably getting an extra 40-50mi out of a tank, no joke. that's about a 10 - 15% increase so not insignificant

Check them when there cold, i.e. not after driving miles on the motorway, and yes it's makes a difference, over inflated tyres will have less contact with the road, therefore more mpg but handling / braking distance will be affected, under inflated will have more tyre contact with road but can damage the sidewall of the tyre!

well let's bear in mind i'm still on my first proper tank since i sorted them out... (normally i'll just fill a tenner here, a tenner there as i need/where it's cheaper)
i was getting 330mi for a trip from Leeds to Birmingham (i.e. motorway driving) and then driving to work and back and the gym and back, plus or minus odd trips here and there (i.e. city driving). this was pretty reliable, happened 3 or 4 times
now i'm on target to get at least that (and probably a bit more actually) with just city driving, so definitely a big improvement.

Christ!! I'm lucky if I get 230 miles per tank doing city driving. Did a 80 mile gentle drive during this tank, the rest has been city, and i'm on course for 280-290 miles.
Gonna check my tyres and see if I can squeeze out a couple more miles.
not really lol. the 2.0T's reported fuel mileage is the same as my old 1.6 MPI but in real terms the gearing is quite low so travelling at sensible motorway speeds the car is on boost and drinks petrol like nobody's business. and there's a lot more drag on the system, so you can't as easily coast down hills and stuff to bring it up again
it's still worth it tho! think of it this way, even with a 330mi tank i'm getting 25% worse fuel economy for a 95% power gain (440mi -> 330mi vs. 102 bhp -> 197bhp)
and in actual terms the price difference is probably less because i used to live near a Shell and used V-Power but now i live near a Tesco and use Momentum 99
