New A3 owner, 2.0 tdi 170bhp.

Hello,

This is my first post so hello and please bear with me whilst I get to grips with the forum layout etc.

Anyway I've currently got a 57 plate vw golf r32 dsg.

Due to the government wanting more money from us everyday I've decided to go down the route of a diesel to save the £400+ road tax and 18mpg fuel returns.

I've just ordered a white a3 s line 2ltr tdi 170bhp with the manual gearbox in White.

I've took one for a test drive and it pulled very nicely indeed and was shocked how quiet it was.

I've had a quick look around at a few bits and pieces but can't find much.

I would like a miltek exhaust ( for looks not noise ) to replace the air intake and a decent re-map for now. I'm also trying to find some genuine Audi alloys (the ones that come with the black edition)

Finally what else is worthwhile doing to the engine for good reliable performance I'm not wanting to go crazy as I've only gone for the 2wd drive version this time which may of been a mistake after the snow we've had again today

Apologies to rabbit on but hopefully some of you guys could point me in the right direction.

hi mate,
first thing's first, you're better off posting in the audi a3/s3 8p forum: this one is for the first generation a3 (96-03). a remap from a reputable company would be a worthwhile thing to do, and judging by why you've gone down the diesel route, the only thing i would suggest you do!

my personal recollection is the black edition alloys are different... does beg the question why you couldnt just order them from the dealer as for quattro v fwd with the t/c and other eletric gadgetry, you shouldnt suffer too badly

No the black edition now some with the same alloys as the TTRS

I'm struggling to find the alloys I'm after. I think there the 7 double spoke alloys mines not got them fitted. Don't want the crappy eBay reps

You'll pay a large premium if you buy genuine Black Edition alloys from the dealer.

Best bet is to keep an eye on ebay. They do pop up sometimes. If I had the spare cash I'd sell you mine and upgrade to the BBS CK's I want .... but now's not a good time!

Personally I would alter the order to Quattro asap and stop any thoughts about mods.

BE adds, Bose, Blue tooth, Rotor wheels, dark rear windows, Aenon Headlights with LED DRL's and Black Optic pack.

Black edition is lovely but out my price range for now I've only got rid of the r32 to save some money per month.

I'm not too bothered about the quattro I've got the 4wd on my golf and it still didn't save me from going in to a kerb and I rarely go hammering it around anyway.

Will deffo keep an eye out for the alloys its all I really want at the moment. I was going to ask the salesman if he could some sort of deal with my alloys in part ex but not holding my breath :-(

first off wecome to the best forum on the net and secondly good choice for car the a3 is a quality car when i sell mine im defo buying another on ive been bitten by the audi bug well and truely lol , good luck finding black edtion alloys tho they will look much better than the standard alloys , what alloys are on there now are they the silver 7 spoke alloys or different ?? if they are the 7 spoke ones have you thought about getting the alloys professionally sprayed in the same colour as this will save you a small fortune and time

No unfortunately there not the 7 spokes :-( I'm on the hunt for some at the moment and plan on getting them powder coated. I take it the a3 is 5 x 112 et54?

I want these to be the first change as I feel they'll set the car off nicely just struggling to find any genuine ones :-(

You will want Quattro...anything else you can add later but if you go fwd you might as well order a golf if money is tight.
You will be cursing fwd in the wet even with normal driving, especially trying to pull away at junctions .........because it wont

If you do one thing this year change that order now quick or regret it later.

Sorry but the last loan car i had was a new 140 diesel A4 fwd. Trying to pull out of the dealership across a busy main rd at rush hour was a nightmare. Every time a gap came along i put my foot down and wheel spun and missed the chance. In the end i found my self taking chances out of there that would not have been a problem for my Quattro with nearly double the power. The whole point of the Audi over the Golf is the quattro. If you dont want that then get a far newer chassis/car with touch screen sat nav and DAB radio and all the mod cons that audi fleese you for or dont offer with a Golf every time.

If your looking to save money why are you buying new??? I picked up a well specked 2007 quattro 170 tdi for £15k came with xenons, full leather, privacy glass, parking assist, 18" split rims. There are some well speced cars out there you just need to be quick as they go. I brought mine off Stafford Audi before they advertised it.

Agree on this mate. I have Quattro on my A3 2.0T which I bought from my parents, they now what you have ordered but DSG. There is no need for Quattro on this model on day to day driving. Yeah if you try and pull out of a junction with too much throttle it will spin up, but really that is down to common sense driving!!

Test drove a DSG S3 whilst my car was out of action, and struggled to get the power down without spinning up the wheels!

I have fewer problems with my non-quattro 2.0 TFSI than I did with that S3!

I have on order an A3 SB BE 170 S-tronic and would have loved to have the quattro but Audi don't do both together and really wanted the DSG so chose this over the quattro as not a nut case driver and will just take care where and whenever.

Test drove a c class sport and a 3 series and both felt cheap inside, the only other option was the A5 Sportback but fancied saving a few grand so chose the A3.

the dsg is a peach of a gearbox i love driving them in work , its strange of audi not to do the 170 quattro with dsg they do the a5 3.0tdi with quattro and dsg and lots of others too come on audi get a grip lol

Yes and no. I'd expect the rears to wear more simply because driven wheels will always wear more than those which are simply "along for the ride", but the fronts would probably wear less as they're not doing as much work.

As I've said several times I don't need the quattro system I'm going to be driving a 170bhp diesel and not driving like a maniac. With a decent set of tyres it should pull away from junctions just fine.
I'm not paying no more money on the car per month as its on a PCP just saving money on the fuel, tax and insurance over the R32 so treated myself to a new on which works out cheaper due to higher residual values etc.
I bought an Audi because I wanted one and liked the shape. I've had a golf and loved every minute of it but want to try the Audi out this time.
There are much more powerful cars out there (think hot hatch petrol) that are fwd and happily put the power down in all but the worst weather.

Not any more Paddy As long as you have 5mm on one axle it's OK to put 2x new on the other. Audi recommendation....

Absolutely not... Reliabilty is suspect... sericing very frequent and build quality very dubious and not a quality product like the 8P.

i agree with pilot on this my mate has got a mits galant vr4 and it cost him close on £900 for a service not long ago and the build quality is nothing on vag cars mine has done more milage than hims but mine drives much better lol
