This morning when parking up I put the handbrake on, but accidentally left the car in 'D' and took my foot off of the brake pedal.
After a couple of seconds I felt the car lifting and heard the handbrake creaking, so quickly put it in 'P'.

Just wondering, what would happen if for example I had gotten out of the car and didn't notice it was still in 'D'??
If the handbrake is on hard enough I'm hoping the engine would stall.

Anybody seen what actually happens??

The clutch will slip if the hand brake is any good. If not the car will go off without you.

Yeah mine does the same thing. Proper driver etiquette is to use the handbrake when stopped at lights etc even in two pedal "automatic" transmissions (and especially at night) to avoid dazzling other drivers (not to mention the potential safety aspect of not being rammed forward into another car if you're rear ended) . In my tiptronic 1.6 I used to use the handbrake but in the DSG'ed car I get the same creaking. The handbrake obv isn't good enough to hold the car, so I don't bother anymore or I slip it into neutral if I know it's gonna be a long wait

Huh?????????????????????? Was that meant to be posted here?? :lmfao:

My point is that I want to use the handbrake as it's intended to be used, but the car is straining on it if you leave it in D and put it on (as you described in the original post) and actually still creeps forward a tiny bit so I don't bother anymore

(if I'm still missing something and being retarded it's cos I'm working nights atm and have only had about 5hr sleep total in the last 3 days)

I think the basics here are
Drive means GO
Handbreak means STOP
Getting out of the car with the engine rumming in drive is not in the instruction book...:)

So... now that we have returned from Narnia.... as per post #1, if I accidentally got out of my car and left if for a few minutes with the engine running, handbrake up, in 'Drive'... is it going to end badly??

I promise I won't do this on purpose, but have always wondered what would happen and if there is some sort of safety feature that prevents damage.

Strap a cushion to the front of your car, just in case

Aythreee....I will save you :)
the clutch Will slip a bit like if you put it in drive in deep snow at tick over.
That said.... I did exactly what you are saying, got half out of the car...realised what i had done and using my left foot ( which you never do in an auto) the right foot was out of the car by then...stood on the gas instead of the brake to knock it into park at which point the handbrake said sod this and i wrote the car off...

How do you accidentally get out of your car?

:lmfao: Pedantic but funny.

I prefer the opposite, putting it into park while its still moving!

My teeth are still in the steering wheel!

Park and Drive do cause some problems.
One day, after owning my car for a week, I parked up and switched the engine off. Tried to take the key out of the ignition but it was stuck. Pulled and twisted and wiggled and yanked it, but it wouldn't come out.
Sat there for about 20 minutes thinking what to do, then I had a brainwave..........................

Take it out 'D' and put it in 'P' :faint:

The one that gets me is dropping in to neutral in a traffic jam.... then pushing the stick forward to get first ( which is reverse) and frightening the **** out of the people behind as i lurch back wards then remember its an auto and i dont need to push it forward for first...its backwards for forwards...Ho hum.

Following on from that.......... to go from Park to Drive you have to pass Reverse for a split second. Does our reverse light flick on every single time the gear lever passes 'R'?? Or is there a delay so the reverse light only comes on if its left in 'R' for a bit longer??
Never noticed.

There is a delay of a second or two on my B5.

i know this isnt linked to audi's and dsg gearboxes but when we had the snow there was this girl trying to get her car out of the snow she was just wheels spinning away so her bf got out and started pushing to no avail so she got out and started pushing at the front while the car was still spinning away i couldnt do anything i was like a rabbit in the car headlights stunned to what they were doing then they did it in reverse gear too by this time i was having trouble breathing from laughing so much in the end they gave up

LMFAO, tell me about it, although I havnt reached the incontinence stage as yet, the memory is absolutely attrocious short term, think it was the partying days, to many herbal teas :)

You can tell the incontinent ones...they have heated seats :) or auto drying as i like to think of them.
I regularly drive manual and DSG and i still dont remember to dip the clutch on occasions when i stop in the manual....but if i haven't got it after 25 years it ain't going to happen now...lol

When, on the rare occasions I drive my wife's manual gearbox Polo, I remember to use the clutch to change gear and when I stop but I do forget that a manual gearbox does not automatically select first gear when you stop. Trying to pull away in second or third in a 1.4 Polo does not work very well!!

ive lost track of the amount of people i see doing that when i go out on testdrive with them for work lol
