Hi people, just looking for a quick answer. My wife just rang me and the oil min light has come on as she's driving to a friends. If the oil is low, is there a generic oil she can quickly top it up with (she's parked in a petrol station) or is it a case of me flying back from manchester to get the correct oil and fill it up?

Or, is it ok to drive for a few miles to her friends house and i will go home from work and sort out the problem properly?

Thanks!!!

she could drive the few miles as its only the oil min light
its not gona hurt it
but for a quick top up not knowing if your oil is semi or fully synthic wouldnt like to recomend what to top up with

Ok, thanks mate. I have no idea as I haven't done anything to do with the oil, the garage does it all. Hmmm, I will tell her to drive to her friends and rush home from work and get a mate to drop me off there. If I get a fully synth would that mix with semi, or other way around at all?

What oil do I need? Like, if I was to do an oil change what would you recommend?

Thanks

id top up with 10/40 semi to be safe
yes they have the min light

Ok thanks mate. I was gonna actually service it on Wednesday so the light has come a day early. Ha. I might just take tomorrow off work and get it serviced, if I can find a friend with a garage that is, don't fancy laying on the snow changing the oil.

I might have to call at halfords on the way home and grab a litre then.

Ok, well then, her mate lives about 5 miles from our house. Now, bearing in mind that I know this is my own risk, but reckon she'd be alright driving home with it on?

She just texted and told me that her friend has an A3, and her husband an A5 (both diesels), and they have some oil (which will hopefully be of a similar type). I'm wondering about slipping a few quid their way and getting them to put a litre or so in to keep me until wednesday when I plan on servicing it?

Oooh, double post. I win

Check the dipstick...

If the level is on the dipstick it'll be fine to drive home unless theres something seriously broken.

She checked. It was a mil or so below the bottom level (no excuse I know...I'm annoyed at myself for not keeping an eye on it).

Her friends husband put a bit of 10/40 semi synth oil in it. Car is home now, and gonna get serviced Wednesday. Thanks for all the replies people.

after you do the oil change put the extra in the boot for her most audis burn a bit of oil

Yeah, will do. I just need to find a guide for how to service it myself. Used to do my old 306 but not touched this hardly under the bonnet.

Thanks
