i brought myself a hid xenon conversertion kit for my audi a3 i fitted it in and it works fine, just sometimes the computer on the car takes long to read the bulb so it would say the dipped lights are out but turn of after a few seconds. after a couple of days having the kit it, it rained and i noticed my wipers wernt working, ive asked around and people been saying it could've blown the wiper motor, but i still don't know, i've changed the wiper motor but have now took out the hid kits, any ideas if i put the hid kit back on would my wipers still work? thanks.

its the hid's that blew your wiper budd common problem with a3's it happened to me also so i took them out sharpish after reading up on it on this forum what happens is the power up on the hid's power spikes the wiper motor ecu and blows it dont put any more in get oem xenon's otherwise it will happen again

I think we need a sticky in this forum "DO NOT FIT AFTERMARKET HID KITS TO THE A3"

The amount of people who have lost wiper motors now must be in double figures!

its prob a lot more then that, just imagine the number of people that do fit them that arnt a member of this forum or others! sure this is a nice little earner for Audi!

Why do people try and do things like this to an Audi?! It's not a Fiesta or a Corsa than can have random bits added to it without any problems, it's a very well built, very complex and expensive machine!!!

If you wanted HID lights, you should have retrofitted xenons

i had HIDS on my mk4 golf a bit back but and worked fine but put them on my a3 sline and wiper motor blew and now wipers so i got some resistor pack from euro car parts and hids work fine and got a new wiper motor. been perfect ever since TOUCH WOOD. i do want OEM xenons but dont have the money to do so just yet so HIDs will have to do for me :)

ps. any1 selling xenon light set up? (OEM ofc)

Or very fragile if you look at it that way! lol It seems it only affects the A3 for some reason so there's something peculiar with the way it's wired.

Not only does it look utter **** when someone puts HIDs in standard headlights, but it then persists to blind the **** out of all the other road users as the beam pattern is ****

People need to stop being cheap, get some proper projector headlights (or OEM xenons) if they want xenon/HID lights

Rant over :)

How is that relevant to the fragility of the electrical system!? ;)

I did look in to this and you CAN buy HID kits suitable for reflector housings (Volvos, Renault Lagunas amongst others use reflector housings with OEM HIDs). You need a H7R (short bulb). The R refers "reflector" and they have a ceramic coating on the bulb to cut the beam off. But that still doesn't solve the wiper motor problem, although a few kits specifical state fine for use in "AUDI A3" and mention the wiper motor issue won't be a problem...

Car Lights - Car Bulbs - Headlights - Wiper Blades - Xenon Bulbs | Autobulbs Direct Ltd I used this company for mine! If you order the H7 ultimate kit they have been designed with the wiper motor fault in mind! I have had mine on bout 6 months with no problems at all. little bit more expensive than some of the kits on flee bay but you get what you pay for!
is it really worth the risk in my eyes not a chance ,only oem for me from now on dont want the same thing happening again

ur car runs off a system called can(controlled area network) if u buy a set of canbus hid,s they will fit easier due 2 smaller ballasts an allso they will work fine i your car with out any problem atall

Still doesnt help the beam pattern as the halogen headlights dont have deffusers to balance the light output.

i am theyre cornering too ;)

Yes but by that it means OEM Xenon headlight, bulbs and ballasts.

So when people have problems after fitting cheap and nasty aftermarket HID kits, it's Audi's fault for "fragile electrics" is it?

I'm with smudge on this one - stop fitting cheap rubbish to Audis - they cause problems and, even when they do work, they just blind everyone else and make you look like a chav IMO. Sorry but that's how I feel about it.

Not Audi's problem per se, but if you can explain why it bizarrely fries the wiper motor on the A3 but no other 12v car (basically all cars) I'm all ears :D Essentially a 12v device has been added to the car - why should this affect and damage something else on the car? this could potentially just be something completely different the owner has fitted, for example something like an amp or something etc.

I'm not debating what they look or perform like so try and put that aside!! Hence my post you quoted!

its the inital voltage that goes through the system on sparking on the xenon arc, its comparable to sparking the arc on a stick welding plant i would say thats well outta the realm of 12v i think its in the range of 300v. at teh eng of the day they blind other road users make your premium car look chavvy and arent mot spec, it is my opinion that youre an idiot for fitting them, if you include say 3 fried wiper motors over your time with the car thats your cost of upgrading to bixenon with or without afs covered

The 300v shouldn't be seen in the rest of the system otherwise every car would just fry everything. It should be 12v in the ballast and that outputs the high volts to the bulb, so it must be the ballast feeding some backwards who knows.

Did they blow right away ? Also who told you to put resistors onto it? and what's the difference with or with out resistors ?

We have a FAQs thread for this sort of stuff. Please feel free to link this thread into it mate.

see post no 2 enough said really , but if you want to put them in the go nuts my wipers didnt blow strait away they were in for about 4 months before they did so it WILL happen not if

hay guys and girls! i too like many of you have had the dreaded wiper motor not working after fitting a non genuine HID kit to my A3, however it does pay working for an Audi dealer having access to all sorts of wiring diagrams and speeking to a few wizards i guess is the best description for them there is a common shared earth behind the left hand headlight. the wiper motor and the headlights are both earthed on whats known as a spider earth , when you first turn the hid kit on the inital spike of power back feeds through the earth system and as we all know to well blows the wiper motor. the answer to this isint to just fit OEM HID headlights, you can cut the earth wire from the wiper motor and run a new earth from the wipers directly to the battery earth treminal completly bypassing the spider earth completly. i did this to my car last wednesday (3rd Feb 2011) and a week later its still working, i'll let you know if its still working in a weeks time or so, but so far so good! just thought i'd share my findings! :D

Very interesting Gazz - many thanks for the info - I'm sure it will be useful to a lot of people on this forum.

Cheers - oh and welcome as I see it's you're first post !

Thats helps the wiper issue but VOSA say they will be checking complience of Xenons within next few years for MOTs.

thats a very useful post there mate but untill im 100% sure it doesnt do any damage im not going to risk putting aftermarket xenon's in my car but i do miss my xenon's they were so nice to drive with let us know the outcome

Audi A3 blows the wiper motor if u install a regular HID.

There is an European company that has been selling an exclusive HID for Audi A3 for more than 2 years.

You can find more info in their Blog:
Kit de Xenon para Audi A3 8P (+2003) « Welldone Lighting

& their website:
Audi A38P - Well-Done

There are eclusive HID for:
- Audi A3 (2003 - 2009)
- Audi A3 Restyling (+2010)

US website:
Welldone Lighting - German cars Experts (7 years experience in Europe)

European Audi forums like Audisport-Iberica use to make purchasing groups to them.

Have a look here:

- Purchasing Group to Welldone for Exclusive A3 HID
Mensaje del Foro

- Another Purchasing Group of Welldone HID
hhttp://www.audisport-iberica.com/foro/index.php?showtopic=243428&st=0

(Audisport Forum just updated the complete forum, so some post dissapear and other have wrong date)

Even some people sells this Exclusive HID for Audi A3 on ebay:
Kit Xenon Audi a3 8P H9 & D2S No Rompe Motor del limpia en venta en eBay.es (finaliza el 29-mar-11 23:18:22 H.Esp)

To bad that AudiSport-iberica forum is not fully working right know, maybe you still can read the old post from 2007 or 2008 using google (cache).

People use to make buying groups for this A3 HID kit. They buy like 20 - 30 each time and there was never 1 wiper motor broken. So this proves this HIDs are working properly.

These are some pics from people using this A38P HID:
