i brought myself a hid xenon conversertion kit for my audi a3 i fitted it in and it works fine, just sometimes the computer on the car takes long to read the bulb so it would say the dipped lights are out but turn of after a few seconds. after a couple of days having the kit it, it rained and i noticed my wipers wernt working, ive asked around and people been saying it could've blown the wiper motor, but i still don't know, i've changed the wiper motor but have now took out the hid kits, any ideas if i put the hid kit back on would my wipers still work? thanks.

its the hid's that blew your wiper budd common problem with a3's it happened to me also so i took them out sharpish after reading up on it on this forum what happens is the power up on the hid's power spikes the wiper motor ecu and blows it dont put any more in get oem xenon's otherwise it will happen again
I think we need a sticky in this forum "DO NOT FIT AFTERMARKET HID KITS TO THE A3"

Why do people try and do things like this to an Audi?! It's not a Fiesta or a Corsa than can have random bits added to it without any problems, it's a very well built, very complex and expensive machine!!!

i had HIDS on my mk4 golf a bit back but and worked fine but put them on my a3 sline and wiper motor blew and now wipers so i got some resistor pack from euro car parts and hids work fine and got a new wiper motor. been perfect ever since TOUCH WOOD. i do want OEM xenons but dont have the money to do so just yet so HIDs will have to do for me

If you order the H7 ultimate kit they have been designed with the wiper motor fault in mind! I have had mine on bout 6 months with no problems at all. little bit more expensive than some of the kits on flee bay but you get what you pay for!
Or very fragile if you look at it that way! lol It seems it only affects the A3 for some reason so there's something peculiar with the way it's wired.

People need to stop being cheap, get some proper projector headlights (or OEM xenons) if they want xenon/HID lights

How is that relevant to the fragility of the electrical system!?
I did look in to this and you CAN buy HID kits suitable for reflector housings (Volvos, Renault Lagunas amongst others use reflector housings with OEM HIDs). You need a H7R (short bulb). The R refers "reflector" and they have a ceramic coating on the bulb to cut the beam off. But that still doesn't solve the wiper motor problem, although a few kits specifical state fine for use in "AUDI A3" and mention the wiper motor issue won't be a problem...
is it really worth the risk in my eyes not a chance ,only oem for me from now on dont want the same thing happening again
ur car runs off a system called can(controlled area network) if u buy a set of canbus hid,s they will fit easier due 2 smaller ballasts an allso they will work fine i your car with out any problem atall

Still doesnt help the beam pattern as the halogen headlights dont have deffusers to balance the light output.

So when people have problems after fitting cheap and nasty aftermarket HID kits, it's Audi's fault for "fragile electrics" is it?How is that relevant to the fragility of the electrical system!?
I'm with smudge on this one - stop fitting cheap rubbish to Audis - they cause problems and, even when they do work, they just blind everyone else and make you look like a chav IMO. Sorry but that's how I feel about it.
Not Audi's problem per se, but if you can explain why it bizarrely fries the wiper motor on the A3 but no other 12v car (basically all cars) I'm all ears
Essentially a 12v device has been added to the car - why should this affect and damage something else on the car? this could potentially just be something completely different the owner has fitted, for example something like an amp or something etc.I'm not debating what they look or perform like so try and put that aside!! Hence my post you quoted!

its the inital voltage that goes through the system on sparking on the xenon arc, its comparable to sparking the arc on a stick welding plant i would say thats well outta the realm of 12v i think its in the range of 300v. at teh eng of the day they blind other road users make your premium car look chavvy and arent mot spec, it is my opinion that youre an idiot for fitting them, if you include say 3 fried wiper motors over your time with the car thats your cost of upgrading to bixenon with or without afs covered
The 300v shouldn't be seen in the rest of the system otherwise every car would just fry everything. It should be 12v in the ballast and that outputs the high volts to the bulb, so it must be the ballast feeding some backwards who knows.

Did they blow right away ? Also who told you to put resistors onto it? and what's the difference with or with out resistors ?

see post no 2 enough said really , but if you want to put them in the go nuts my wipers didnt blow strait away they were in for about 4 months before they did so it WILL happen not if

Thats helps the wiper issue but VOSA say they will be checking complience of Xenons within next few years for MOTs.
