Hello everyone,

Im new to the Forum currently a member on E90 post as i currently drive a BMW E92 325D M sport.
Love my BM but think its time to move on as its coming up for three years old and its not the easiest to drive in the snow. Anyway im looking at ordering a new S3 Sportback from Edinburgh Audi whats everyones oppinion on this dealership?

The car in hand is an Ibis White Black edition S3, I wanted the sat nav, Bose hifi and bluetooth which all come with the black edition pack + I love the 5 spoke alloy wheels and privacy glass/ black silver leather interior. The only other optional extras i was considering was the comfort pack. They had an Ibis white car in waiting for a lucky person to collect it and it looked stunning.

Do any of you regard an optional extra which i havent included as essential? I love the bucket seats but they are a very expensive extra.

Once again thanks and I hope you lot are as helpful as the chaps on E90 Post.

Graeme

Well one thing is for sure, it will be a hell of a lot better in the snow than the BM, I put some hankook winter tyres on mine in the last few weeks, the car just drives fantastic in all types of weather now, ice and snow to the bottom of the front spoiler, 9" at least is easy to drive through, as is breaking.
Comfort pack is well worth it, as it covers a bit for not a lot.
Bucket seats are again dam expensive, but it adds to sale value later for sure, be very easy to sell a 2nd hand S3 with buckets over one with standard seats,
The Other option I wished I had was the adaptive lights that turn around corners, depends where you live and sort of driving you do.
As for Edinburgh, others will comment, but if I recall are they not an MTM dealer as well? so be a good choice for later on, if you want upgrades
Next ? add all those extras, and see how close it is to an RS3 :) which pretty well has those extras, why I think an RS3 is really not that all a bad a price, though that is a 5 door, and DSG

Thanks for the reply, I was told by my dealer that the RS3 will be a £40 K plus car which is out of my price range ! The S3 comes in at about £32k which is considerably less unless my dealer is talking rubbish?

OTR RS3 is £39900, that is 20% VAT,

Not to sure about £32k, I never talk about cost, I talk about what percent discount I am getting etc. Sales were poor last month, though I bet Audi doing ok cos of A1, but car sales are gonna be hard over next few months so push for a good discount.

i think £32k is a lot of money for a car that's basically on it's last legs. don't get me wrong, the S3 is a nice car but it's a lot of money for what it is.

have you considered something like an A5 Sportback? 2.0T quattro should be all you need in a car, and you can get a nearly new one for about the same price.

give it a remap and it'll have similar performance and if you're wanting it for it's 4WD system the A5 quattro has a better 4WD system than the S3.

just my two pence!

Yes i agree that £32 k is a lot of money for an S3 but when you spec up a golf R its ever more expensive listing at about £34k and the S3 looks much better than the golf.

Edinburgh Audi advised me that the S3 facelift wont be released untill 2012. It was due in 2011 but has been delayed because of the release of the A1? or so i was told.

I havent really considered the A5 but have considered an S4 as my local dealership has one which would stretch my budget and is a second hand car but it is beautiful, I really dont know what to do.

Well see if you can drive them, I had an normal A4 on loan for a while, was impressed by lots of things, so I would guess an S4 is awesome, with the right options, and MTM do upgrades as well, my worry is it is a supercharged engine, not a turbo, so you lose some of the fun, but still very quick, and a lot more refined for day to day driving

If you were to order a new s3 from Edinburgh whats the delivery date ?

i would be tempted to look around for a private deal with the right spec , you would save a few quid and get it straight away !
as for Edinburgh audi i used them once for a free mot, but when i tried to get info on service prices and what was included in the service i would have been better to be talking to the bakers............ hence i use a audi independant garage and they are good guys ...............as with any big franchise dealers its more sales than service........... all about the figures

Im waiting on them phoning back with more details he said they have a car on order which would be available for a delivery date in January, if this car has gone its week build 16 next year for a new car.

Agree with this.
I paid 5K under new rrp for a 6month old S3 from an Independant.

That was a couple of years ago but it demonstrates what is achievable, particulalry now that the World is skint.

If you are looking at use A5s, S4s etc then for a sensible comparison to be made then look at used S3s too.

There is a lightly used S3 in PH (belongs to a forum member) with LOTS of extras includung AUDI exculusive stuff for WAY less that new, Ok its a 3dr but again but its the same point, if it doesnt HAVE to be brand new then S3 can be had for much less than the 30+K figures the S3 sceptics like to use, (Sub and Paddy etc :p)

In fact if I decide to replace the S3 in the new year with another then I will do exectly the same thing again and buy a lightly used nearly new car. (Maybe Daves Sepang S3???)

Good luck

Cheers
Paul

Hi Graeme,

I have had a new S3 Sportback for just over 4 months now and it is awesome.
Mine is Ibis White BE and has Tech Pack with AMI, Comfort Pack, Int. Light Pack, Folding Mirrors and Adaptive lights. It is leased but I think price was just under 32k.
Sat Nav and Adaptive lights were a must for me as had them both on my Astra and worked really well.
The only other options I considered were Open Sky and Magnetic Ride but both are quite expensive £1000 & £750 respectively (I think). Not sure how good the magnetic ride is but the open sky does look amazing, especially on an Ibis White car imo. However I was up to my budget with the other options and these weren't really a must for me. Can also get a vinyl wrap on roof for about £200 which looks good.

I know there is a new model on the way and there is the Golf R or Scirocco R but I personally really like the look of the A3/S3 and 32k is not bad. I specced the Golf R but that was about 35k and other cars I looked at were about 27 to 30k but no where near as good as the S3.

The new RS3 does look quite nice but 40k is a lot more for not a massive difference and for less than £500 you can map an S3 to around 300bhp which won't be a million miles off.

My plan, if it all works, is to have an S4 after this lease is up. Onl ything that puts me off is the fuel consumption. It isn't great in the S3 and is worse in the S4.

Theres my 2p!

Well I have 1 guy interwsred from Leeds. He need to sell his editon 30 first. If anyone has any interest then let me know.

I used Edinburgh Audi to buy my S3 back in August. Managed to get a couple of grand off by doing my homework and showing them quotes from a few brokers - they wouldn't match the best broker price ( which was a flat 10% off basic price and all optional stuff ) but got reasonably close and saved me having to pick it up ( or get it delivered ) from down south, plus they did a reasonable price on my trade-in.

Not used them for servicing yet, but was most unimpressed by their parts dept when enquiring about winter wheels a while back. To be fair my mate is getting winter wheels for his A4 from them and they have been very helpful, so maybe just down to luck as to who you get.

@ thebott : who do you use for servicing, is it Autohause ?

i spent MONTHS daydreaming about owning an 8P S3. but can you honestly recommend one at this point in the model cycle? the OP said he can get one for £32k. that's a lot of money considering that it probs won't be delivered for 6 months if it's a factory order... 6 months later, the model changes. and the OP loses probably around £5k straight away. looking at it that way, even Paddy's 3.2 makes more sense.

Read my post again mate, it recommends buying a used one, which has already lost 5K.
So a used one that wont be superceded for 18months or so isnt such a bad move.

My point was that sometimes a new car is a MUST for some people so to compare with S4s/A5s etc then it has to compared to NEW examples.

Must admit though, I am becoming aware that the 8P is cracking on a bit now and am looking at other stuff outside VAG, unless VW give us a 4wd Rocco R.

cheers
Paul

Yeah the 'Rocco R would be my choice too if it had 4motion. Odd decision that by VW
